Background

Mordred was created by Morgan le Fay as one of her exceptionally capable artificial children. Morgan gave her little maternal affection and often regarded her resemblance to Artoria with resentment. Like Morgan's other children, Mordred was sent to the Knights of the Round Table with hostile intent toward King Arthur, but ultimately abandoned Morgan's cause. 18 43

She was taught never to reveal her face and wore the Helmet of Unchastity even while sleeping. Unable to employ attendants or safely socialize with others, she lived in isolation among the Knights of the Round Table. Her homunculus body developed rapidly but then ceased maturing, leaving her physically fixed at roughly fifteen years old. 6

During the recapture of Londinium, Mordred fought with extreme brutality and initially viewed Arthur as a rival. Arthur recognized her loneliness, visited her tent after the battle, and offered friendship. His attention gave Mordred emotions and belonging she had never previously experienced. 5 6

Mordred later revealed her concealed identity and appearance to Arthur, explaining that she was King Arthur and Morgan le Fay's child. Arthur accepted her as his younger brother, a recognition that became the foundation of her complete loyalty to him. 10

Appearance

Mordred resembles a younger Artoria, with golden hair and a youthful, striking face. She initially concealed herself beneath armor and a helmet, but later appeared openly as a young woman. 10 15

  • Often wore heavy plate armor, a horned helmet, and carried a greatsword during her early service. 5
  • Used the Helmet of Unchastity to hide her face and identity. 6
  • Later wore frost-silver armor marked with red while serving as the Dragon Emperor's Himekishi. 117
  • Rode a fiery red warhorse when leading the Empire's knights. 117

Personality

Mordred began as lonely, emotionally inexperienced, and unable to express her needs. Having received neither affection from Morgan nor friendship from other knights, she initially did not know how to respond when Arthur showed concern for her. 6

On the battlefield, she is direct, fierce, and exhilarated by combat. Her early fighting style relied on overwhelming force and left enemies dismembered in her wake; much later, she still charged gladly into superior attacks rather than retreating. 5 196

Arthur's acceptance transformed her into a cheerful and intensely devoted companion. She supports his ambitions without hesitation, grows jealous of those close to him, and defines her own strength through her ability to protect him. 9 24 37

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Battlefield Combat

Mordred is a front-line knight who originally favored a greatsword and later fought with both sword and spear techniques.

  • Her powerful greatsword charges can cut through enemy formations. 5
  • Her technical skill was described as superior to Arthur's, though her overall parameters were lower than his. 34
  • Fights effectively in tandem with Arthur, covering his flanks while coordinating pincer attacks against stronger opponents. 34
  • At Chaldea, she endured a combined barrage of four Command Spell-enhanced Noble Phantasms and continued advancing. 196

Spear Techniques

Scathach retrained Mordred from the basics, distinguishing proper spear combat from the mounted lance techniques she already knew.

  • Learned foundational spear forms, force application, thrust angles, and combat observation under Scathach. 36
  • Made substantial progress over seven days of training and continued resolving to improve afterward. 37 38
  • Received two Gae Bolgs from Scathach: a longer spear for melee combat and a shorter, heavier spear for throwing. 117

Brother's Encouragement A+

An innate skill gained through her bond with Arthur.

  • Slightly increases her parameters when she serves as Arthur's Servant. 34
  • Moderately increases her parameters when fighting alongside Arthur. 34

Recovery and Endurance

Mordred possesses considerable physical resilience and mental fortitude.

  • Recovered visibly from Scathach's injuries within a dream battle. 35
  • Her resilience allowed Scathach to continue using her as a demanding training partner. 35
  • She actively seeks the most difficult battles and expects enemy forces to focus their attacks on her. 117

Magic and Sensory Ability

Mordred initially had a weak magical foundation but improved under Scathach's instruction.

  • Trained in magic alongside spear techniques, though her lessons were separated from Arthur's because of the disparity in their foundations. 37
  • Can identify whom Arthur has met by detecting unfamiliar scents on him. 24

Equipment

  • Helmet of Unchastity — Helmet used to conceal her face and identity; she was instructed not to remove it where others could see her. 6
  • Greatsword — Her primary early weapon, used for destructive, forceful attacks. 5
  • Clarent — Bestowed on Mordred by Arthur after Artoria abdicated and Arthur took up the Sword of Victory and Vows. 55
  • Two Gae Bolgs — Spears gifted by Scathach: one for close combat and one weighted for use as a javelin. 117
  • Frost-silver armor — Her later knightly armor, accented in red. 117

Relationships

  • Artorius Pendragon / Arthur — Her elder brother, commander, and the person whose friendship ended her isolation. Mordred becomes his most loyal knight, general, and companion; their relationship later becomes intimate. 6 10 15 17 24
  • Artoria Pendragon / King Arthur — Recognized by Mordred as “Father King.” Mordred's face closely resembles Artoria's, and she was created as Artoria and Morgan's child. 10
  • Morgan le Fay — Her creator and mother. Morgan's neglect and hostility shaped Mordred's early isolation; Mordred later rejects Morgan in favor of Arthur. 6 18 43
  • Scathach — Her combat instructor. Mordred initially challenged Scathach to protect Arthur, then accepted her as Teacher and trained diligently under her. 34 36 37
  • Gareth — Fellow knight and early battlefield companion. Gareth discovered Mordred's gender after finding her in Arthur's tent. 5 15
  • Mordred Variants — Alternate Mordreds who united with her during the Pendragon family civil war, collectively repelling three waves of Artoria Variant attacks before Morgan poisoned them. 147

Story Role / Major Arcs

Londinium and Vortigern Campaign

Mordred fought on Britannia's side during the retaking of Londinium, where her violent fighting style and rivalry with Arthur first became apparent. Arthur's later visit to her tent began their partnership, though Mordred's resulting emotional turmoil caused insomnia and impaired performance in the assault on Vortigern's castle. 5 6 7

Saxon Alliance and Continental Expedition

She publicly announced Arthur as both Vortigern's heir and King Arthur's successor while he negotiated with the Saxons. After Arthur shared his ambition to build a world-spanning legacy, Mordred pledged herself to his cause. 8 9

Mordred accompanied Arthur to Rome and the Continent, becoming one of his trusted military commanders. Over two years, she suppressed rebellions, commanded battles, and developed into Arthur's “sharpest shield and sword.” 12 17

Shadow Country Training

Mordred protected Arthur when Scathach attacked them in a dream and fought beside him against her. Their combined tactics initially suppressed Scathach, but she ultimately defeated them with superior speed and skill. 34 35

Following the defeat, Mordred trained under Scathach in spear techniques and magic. She resolved to surpass Scathach so she could become worthy of being Arthur's guardian. 36 37

Imperial Service

As Arthur's power expanded, Mordred became his second-in-command and was regarded as both a partner and a potential successor. She later served as Vice Commander of the Radiant Knights and Commander of the Second Legion. 43 60

She led from the front as the Dragon Emperor's Himekishi, equipped with Clarent and Scathach's Gae Bolgs, preparing to campaign against the Empire's strongest enemies. 117

Pendragon Family Civil War

During the conflict among Artoria Species and their variants, Mordred joined four alternate versions of herself rather than fighting them. The five Mordreds formed a unified force, repelled three waves of attacks, and were eventually defeated by Morgan le Fay's poison. 147

Chaldea Conflict

Mordred fought Chaldea's Servants during the French Empire's war with Chaldea. She treated the battle as a source of joy, withstanding their combined Noble Phantasm assault and defeating Jeanne d'Arc, Elizabeth Báthory, and Queen Mary in succession. 196

Trivia
