Course Selection
A week after returning from Paris, on a sunny morning, Kyle finally received a letter from Hogwarts.
That day, he went downstairs for breakfast as usual and found Fred and George already waiting for him in the living room.
After hiding for more than a month, they now wish they could spend all day in Kyle's attic, researching those "Skiving Snackboxes".
Chris didn't find it noisy at all.
In fact, he was quite welcoming to Fred and George... It was nice to have a lively atmosphere so early in the morning.
"A letter from the school?" Kyle picked up a yellow parchment envelope from the table; the writing on it was green.
"Yes, it was just delivered a few minutes ago," Chris said.
"Five minutes," Fred said.
"We happened to run into an owl when we went out..."
"Kyle, take a look, you'll be amazed."
Kyle didn't speak, but carefully read the letter.
In addition to instructing him to take the Hogwarts Express from King's Cross Station to school on September 1st, the letter also included a list of new books he would need for the year.
Third-grade students should read:
Intermediate Transfiguration, by Emery Switch.
<The Standard Book of Spells: Level Three>, by Miranda Goshawk.
Break with a Banshee, by Gilderoy Lockhart.
"Travels with Ghouls" by Gilderoy Lockhart.
Holidays with Hags...
The following seven books are all works by Gilderoy Lockhart.
Although he knew it would be like this, Kyle still couldn't help but rub his forehead after seeing this outrageous book list.
Gilderoy Lockhart's books weren't cheap; they were basically five Galleon each. Each of them needed to sell seven copies, which was thirty-five Galleon.
This is no small sum; it's almost half a month's salary for Mr. Weasley.
And this is just one person's expense. Even if only half of the people at Hogwarts buy the new book, Lockhart can easily earn tens of thousands of Galleon.
The Potter family's hard-earned wealth accumulated over generations may not even equal what he made this time.
No wonder Lockhart took the job... Even the infamous Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor didn't seem so scary in front of tens of thousands of Galleon.
Before Galleon... a curse? Ha, just a hollow legend!
After reviewing the book list, Kyle pulled a second parchment from the envelope.
"Why do you have one more than us...?"
Fred was taken aback at first, then realized and said, "Oh, I almost forgot, you're a third-year student, you need to choose your courses."
Kyle looked at the parchment.
Third grade course selection:
(Choose at least two courses and purchase the necessary textbooks before the start of the semester.)
Arithmancy, <Numerology and Grammatica>, by L. Wakefield and M. Carneiro.
Divination, <Unfogging the Future>, by Cassandra Vabraski.
Care of Magical Creatures, from * Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them *, by Newt Scamander.
Muggle Studies, <Life and Habits of British Muggle Families>...
And finally, there's the Ancient Runes.
A Beginner's Guide to Ancient Runes
Runic Dictionary
<Detailed Explanation of Runic Symbols>
<Magical Glyph Collection>
<Magical Phonetic Table>
Five books in total, including dictionaries and pronunciation tables, clearly demonstrate just how difficult this course is.
Moreover, when Fred and George next to him saw the course name, they both shuddered.
"Honestly, this course was the worst disaster I've ever experienced," Fred said, still shaken.
"Even more terrifying than having lunch with Three-headed Dog..."
Kyle casually drew a circle in front of the Ancient Runes. "So you guys are planning to drop this course this year?"
"No, we only skipped the Divination Class."
"For the sake of the Weasleys' Joke Shop," George said tragically.
"So what are you going to choose for your second course?" Fred asked. "Care of Magical Creatures? Or Divination?"
"I suggest you choose Divination," George said earnestly. "That course is really easy, and getting a high score is simple, as long as you... um..."
At that moment, George suddenly realized that Chris was also there, and quickly changed his words, saying, "... as long as you pay attention in class, that's fine."
Chris shook his head, somewhat amused.
Although Sybill Trelawney went to Hogwarts after he graduated, he had still heard of the infamous "liar professor."
Moreover, the newly graduated staff at the Ministry of Magic mentioned her many times during their conversations.
"When will Trelawney be fired?" has always been a hot topic in the department.
Therefore, Chris knew exactly what the Divination Class was all about.
However, he didn't say anything and continued to eat his breakfast calmly.
Meanwhile, Fred and George were still enthusiastically offering suggestions.
"Care of Magical Creatures isn't bad either," George said, looking at Kyle. "This course should be easier for you than Divination Class, right?"
"That's true." Kyle nodded, and also marked the course name.
Then came Divination... Arithmancy... Muggle Studies...
Under Fred and George's astonished gazes, Kyle marked all the elective courses.
"Kyle, you're not going to be like Percy and take all the classes, are you?"
George frowned. "Believe me, this is definitely not a good idea."
"You might not know this, Percy was almost driven insane in his third year."
"He slept at home for three days during the Christmas holidays..."
"He didn't wake up at all during that time..."
"His mother was terrified and almost sent him to St Mungo's's!"
Even Chris, who was standing next to him, frowned:
"I also don't recommend you take so many courses, Kyle."
He said, "You already have the Order of Merlin, Second Class, there's really no need to be obsessed with the twelve certificates."
And... those who fool time will eventually be fooled by time... do you understand what I mean?"
"Of course, Dad."
Kyle folded up the course selection schedule and smiled, "Trust me, I can handle it."
"If you insist... then alright." Chris hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
After that Kyle called Ladon and sent the course selection form back to Hogwarts.
Fred and George exchanged a glance, having originally intended to persuade Kyle to take two fewer courses...
After all, Percy is the best example.
They didn't want to see Kyle become like that, always looking sleepy and listless.
But Ladon flew too fast, disappearing outside in the blink of an eye, leaving them no time to react.
The timetable has now been returned to Hogwarts, so the two can only temporarily abandon their attempt to persuade Kyle...
The two planned to write letters to other people, and then, once on the train, they would join them in persuading them.
In any case, Kyle must be persuaded to change his mind before class begins!
