Background and History

Mihawk was a bounty hunter before meeting Yoriichi. At around twenty years old, he had turned in wanted criminals for bounties but was otherwise largely unknown to the Marines 167. Seeking a worthy swordsman, he attacked Issho in a tavern. After Issho blocked his slash, Mihawk lost interest upon learning that Issho also relied on a Devil Fruit ability 164.

Yoriichi intervened and defeated Mihawk, then spared him. Mihawk initially considered life after defeat dishonorable, but Yoriichi urged him to keep pursuing the title of world’s greatest swordsman and to challenge him again. Mihawk accepted that goal and boarded Yoriichi’s ship 165 166. Although Yoriichi called him a “labor camp prisoner,” Mihawk was neither shackled nor assigned prison labor. He later fought alongside the Marines without holding a rank 167 186.

Mihawk continued to train with Yoriichi and Issho in Dressrosa 211. After Yoriichi’s disappearance, he became a crucial deterrent for the New Marines: a defeat could have encouraged hostile forces to attack them. During this period, he earned the title of world’s greatest swordsman 621 626.

Appearance

Mihawk has distinctive Hawk Eyes and a refined mustache. He generally dresses as he pleases rather than wearing a Marine uniform 621 743.

Personality

Mihawk seeks powerful opponents, especially swordsmen, and repeatedly challenges Yoriichi despite their initial difference in strength 166 167. He can be blunt and impatient with formalities, but he does not assume a formidable opponent is easy to defeat. Against Blackbeard, he studies the risks of close combat before committing to it 622 631.

He has little interest in administering the Marines. Outside training, he drinks red wine, cooks his own meals, and maintains exacting standards for food 253 388.
