Nature
A Nascent Soul is a stable structure of dharma power condensed from divine consciousness. It is born from the Golden Core and is also called a Yin Spirit because it is “pure as an infant” at its inception. It is generally a projection of the cultivator’s own soul, though rare Nascent Souls may take unusual dharma forms. 524
A stable Yin Spirit increases the efficiency and strength of divine consciousness, as well as its connection to body and mana, by roughly tenfold. 524
- The Nascent Soul realm follows Golden Core cultivation and precedes Spirit Transformation. 524 703
- Nascent Soul True Lords possess major advantages in divine sense, mana, spells, and Dharma Artifacts over Golden Core cultivators. 419
- A cultivator who forms a Yin Spirit gains a lifespan of roughly 1,500 years before tribulation-related extensions. 231
Formation
Nascent Soul formation requires a resonance between cultivator and heaven; reaching the peak of the tenth Golden Core level alone is insufficient. 541
Gao Xian’s formation was complicated by discordant metal-element mana. He perfected the Sharp Metal Divine Light, restored balance, and successfully condensed his Nascent Soul with Sister Lan’s assistance. 542
Formation Resources
- Earth-Origin Spirit Fluid — A key spiritual treasure used in Nascent Soul formation and subsequent purification. 537 546
- Jade Spirit Paste — Paired with Earth-Origin Spirit Fluid as a Nascent Soul-forming resource. 537 538
- Nine-Turn Supreme Clarity Pills — Purify the newly formed Yin Spirit, dharma power, and body. 546
- Pure Yang Jade Clear Flower — Gives the soul Pure Yang Precious Radiance, strengthening and stabilizing it against tribulations and demonic corruption. 427
Yin Spirit Grades
| Grade | Characteristics | Advancement Potential |
|---|---|---|
| Lower-grade Yin Spirit | Common among Nascent Soul Early Stage cultivators; its form is unstable and generally cannot easily leave the sea of consciousness. 505 | Insufficient for Spirit Transformation without major improvement. 505 |
| Middle-grade Yin Spirit | May be attained after the second Wind Tribulation; more solid and stable than an early-stage Yin Spirit. 505 | Still cannot attain Spirit Transformation. 505 |
| Upper-grade Yin Spirit | Can be formed by exceptional cultivators directly or developed through cultivation and resources. 505 | Required foundation for attaining Spirit Transformation. 505 |
Capabilities
Divine Consciousness
A newly formed Nascent Soul can extend divine sense roughly one hundred li beyond the body, while elite Nascent Soul True Lords may reach three to five hundred li. 419
- Divine consciousness can collapse incoming spells before they reach the cultivator’s body. 469
- Nascent Soul cultivators can resonate with the spiritual workings of heaven and earth, occasionally sensing impending fortune or calamity. 558
- Their consolidated Yin Spirits make forcibly searching or extracting soul memories extremely difficult. 559
Mana and Spellcasting
Nascent Soul-level mana is overwhelmingly powerful compared with Golden Core mana; even the residual sword qi from a clash between Nascent Soul cultivators can destroy a great hall. 504
- Nascent Soul True Lords are powerful across divine sense, mana, spells, and artifacts rather than in a single attribute alone. 419
- Formations made from pooled mana generally cannot reliably threaten a Nascent Soul True Lord because they cannot lock onto one in combat. 479
- Ordinary low-rank spells are generally too weak and simplistic to pose a meaningful threat to Nascent Soul-level cultivators. 732
Natal Divine Abilities
Upon forming a Yin Spirit, a cultivator may receive a blessing from heaven and earth and awaken divine abilities. The number and quality of these abilities vary greatly between cultivators. 447
- Gao Xian’s three Golden Core paths produced twenty-one layered divine abilities after advancing into Yin Spirits. 548
- A Nascent Soul’s divine abilities may be enhanced by compatible cultivation arts, life-bound artifacts, and other Nascent Souls. 548 552
Sword Lord Path
For sword cultivators, a Nascent Soul must resonate with its life-bound sword before the cultivator can attain Body-Sword Unity. 524
- Body-Sword Unity allows the sword cultivator’s Yin Spirit and life-bound sword to merge as one. 524
- This path is renowned for exceptional offensive power, though its methods are comparatively singular before Spirit Transformation. 627
- Gao Xian’s sword Nascent Soul, supported by the White Emperor Universe Transformation Sword, is described as his strongest and highest-quality Nascent Soul. 618
Wind Tribulations
Nascent Soul True Lords face Wind Tribulations to strengthen and prolong the existence of their Yin Spirits. Passing each tribulation can add approximately five hundred years of lifespan, for a possible maximum of around three thousand years. 231
| Tribulation | Nature | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| First Wind Tribulation | Heavenly Wind, fierce and blazing like the scorching sun. 498 | A necessary trial for further advancement and lifespan extension. 231 498 |
| Second Wind Tribulation | Earth Wind, identified with the corrosive Nine Nether Yin Wind. 498 | Can temper the Yin Spirit toward greater solidity and the middle-grade level. 505 |
| Third Wind Tribulation | Human Wind, arising from the cultivator’s own seven emotions and six desires. 498 | A formless heart-born tribulation triggered when thoughts stir. 498 |
Limitations
- A Yin Spirit without the protection of a physical body can be eroded or assimilated by surrounding spiritual energy, wind, fire, lightning, and other external forces. 427
- Dense pure-yang energy can melt and disperse an exposed Yin Spirit. 379
- Possession of a new body does not repair a severely damaged Yin Spirit and can instead worsen the damage. 430
- Even after three Wind Tribulations, most Nascent Soul cultivators can reach no higher than middle-grade Yin Spirit quality. 505
- Nascent Soul formation alone does not make a cultivator a Spirit Transformation expert; the Yin Spirit must still be tempered and merged with the divine soul into a Primordial Spirit. 703
Relation to Spirit Transformation
Spirit Transformation begins when a Nascent Soul survives Heavenly Fire Tribulation. During the process, heavenly fire tempers the Yin Spirit and allows it to merge with the divine soul, producing a Primordial Spirit. 703
A Primordial Spirit can exist independently of the flesh and is no longer vulnerable to ordinary water, fire, wind, or lightning in the way a Yin Spirit is. 379
Trivia
- Despite its name, a Nascent Soul is not necessarily a tiny infant-shaped being; it is fundamentally a manifested structure of divine consciousness. 524
- Nascent Soul cultivators are often called True Lords, while sword cultivators who reach this level may be called Sword Lords. 524 555
- A fourth-rank demon beast can be equivalent to a Nascent Soul Early Stage cultivator, but its crude mana and limited innate abilities generally leave it inferior to a true Nascent Soul cultivator. 520
