Background / History

Early life and God Valley

Kaido was born in the Vodka Kingdom. Its king handed him over to the Navy in exchange for influence at the Reverie, believing Kaido’s strength was too dangerous to control; Kaido instead became an uncontrollable pirate 157.

He later served as an apprentice aboard the Rocks Pirates. After the crew's dissolution, he operated as a lone pirate before gradually developing his own position in Wano Country 258.

On Beehive Island, a drunk Kaido wrecked Nanamo's tavern during a fight with other pirates. Nereus abruptly subdued him, ordered him to restore the damage, and established a dynamic in which Kaido recognized Nereus as overwhelmingly stronger 1.

At God Valley, Kaido obtained and consumed the Fish-Fish Fruit, Azure Dragon Form—his only meaningful gain from the incident—and escaped by transforming into a dragon. Charlotte Linlin pursued him in anger after he acquired the fruit 28 33.

Rivalry with Nereus

After God Valley, Kaido invited Nereus to join a crew governed by absolute force. Nereus countered that Kaido would then have to obey him, causing Kaido to abandon the discussion by targeting a Marine infiltrator instead 32.

Kaido repeatedly challenged Nereus despite recognizing their gap in strength. After one aerial battle, Nereus split Kaido's Bolo Breath and knocked him from the sky with Fish-Man Karate; the humiliation of using an unimpressive technique name prompted Kaido to begin studying how to name his attacks properly 38.

When leaving Nereus's group for the New World, Kaido declared that he would challenge Nereus again and sought a Lunarian companion for his future crew 47.

Rise in Wano Country

Kaido entered Wano after Kurozumi Higurashi invited him to support the Kurozumi family's plans. While building his forces there, he requested Fish-Man Island's help investigating an object in Wano's inland sea; Sebastian identified it as a Road Poneglyph, which Kaido chose to leave underwater as a secret 228 229.

He defeated Gecko Moria's invading crew and dismissed Moria as too weak to matter. Moria escaped, but Wano's population believed him dead after the battle's devastation 230 231.

Kaido eventually fought Kozuki Oden, receiving an enduring scar but defeating him. He then betrayed Kurozumi Orochi, killed him, and seized direct control of Wano 255 256. Seeking to consolidate his rule, Kaido ordered Queen to eliminate Orochi's remaining forces, portray Orochi as responsible for Wano's suffering, and win over or suppress the samurai population 256.

By the era of the Four Emperors, Kaido controlled Wano's Seastone raw ore and was recognized as its de facto ruler, with a bounty of 4,611,100,000 Beli 337.

Appearance

Kaido is an enormous, horned man who commonly carries a spiked club. His Mythical Zoan ability lets him become a colossal Azure Dragon.

  • Prominent horns inherited by his daughter Yamato 344
  • Massive physique capable of surviving high-altitude impacts that would destroy ordinary people 257 258
  • Uses a spiked club, later identified as Hassaikai 1 259
  • Azure Dragon form with blue-green scales and flame clouds 32 257

Personality

Kaido believes strength is the sole justification for authority. He considers the strong entitled to trample the weak and regards defeat as proof that the loser was insufficiently powerful 231. He respects opponents who can fight him evenly or force him to acknowledge their superiority, particularly Nereus and Kozuki Oden 256 274.

Though he prefers solving problems through overwhelming force, Kaido is not unintelligent. In Wano, he deliberately used division, recruitment, propaganda, and political symbolism to make part of the population accept his rule 256.

Alcohol makes Kaido erratic and emotionally expressive. While drunk, he can become sorrowful, spoiled, delighted, or violent without warning 1. He is also unusually sensitive about the presentation of his techniques, becoming obsessed with finding suitably impressive names after Nereus defeated him 38.

Kaido values strength in subordinates and family alike. His concern often takes the form of brutal “training,” particularly toward Yamato, whose resentment of his methods remains profound 257 344.

Abilities & Skills

Fish-Fish Fruit, Azure Dragon Form

Kaido possesses a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that grants him the power of an Azure Dragon 28 337.

  • Transforms into a gigantic dragon capable of sustained flight 32 47
  • Produces flame clouds that support his movement and can restrain others in midair 257
  • Can enter a Dragon-Man form for greater combat power 230
  • Fires Bolo Breath, a devastating stream of scorching energy 38
  • Gains exceptional physical enhancement and resilience as a Mythical Zoan user 230

Physical Strength and Durability

Kaido is a close-combat monster even without transforming. Moria could not leave a scar on him in human form and was unable to match him without reinforcements 230 231.

  • Wields Hassaikai with overwhelming striking force 259
  • Survives deliberate high-altitude falls and uses them as dramatic entrances 257 258
  • Previously allowed himself to be captured by Marines simply to eat aboard prison ships before escaping 32
  • Treats powerful enemies and life-or-death battles as opportunities to test strength 38 229

Haki

Kaido uses Haki in combat and has passed the foundations of his club-fighting style to Yamato 259 280.

  • His Haki visibly surrounds him when preparing for serious combat 259
  • His signature technique became the basis of much of Yamato's fighting style 280
  • Values Haki, physique, and Devil Fruit mastery as the core of combat training 259

Thunder Bagua

Thunder Bagua is Kaido's signature spiked-club strike and the foundation of his combat system 1 280.

  • Used in his tavern brawl on Beehive Island 1
  • Employed to attack Kurozumi Orochi during Kaido's coup in Wano 256
  • Inherited and adapted by Yamato 280 321

  • Yamato — Daughter. Kaido wants her to become strong enough to surpass him, but his violent training methods and rule over Wano make their relationship deeply hostile 257 344.
  • Charlotte Linlin — Former Rocks Pirates crewmate and rival. Kaido acquired the Azure Dragon Fruit despite her involvement with it, provoking her pursuit after God Valley 28 33.
  • Queen — Leading Beasts Pirates executive and former MADS researcher. Kaido relies on him for technology, cleanup operations, and administrative work in Wano 202 256.
  • Kurozumi Orochi — Former ally whose Wano regime Kaido exploited before betraying and killing him 255 256.
  • Kozuki Oden — A powerful opponent Kaido respected more than Orochi. Oden scarred Kaido but ultimately lost their battle 255 256.
  • Hanafza — Combat ally who later joined the Beasts Pirates after Kaido rescued him following his defeat by Ace 272 344.
  • Gecko Moria — Invader defeated by Kaido in Wano; Kaido dismissed him as too weak to deserve attention 230 231.
  • Nanamo — Longtime acquaintance from Beehive Island and Nereus's daughter. She frequently reminds Kaido of the damage he caused to her tavern 1 258.

Trivia
