Background / History

Roger began his career as a straw-hatted boy from Loguetown who wanted to “turn the world upside down.” On his first voyage, he encountered Rayleigh—then living aboard a stolen small boat after his home burned down—and immediately regarded him as a destined companion. 206

During the God Valley incident, Roger and his crew escaped the Navy's pursuit while the World Government sought to erase the island. Roger later revealed that he found Shanks at God Valley and knew of the boy's Celestial Dragon heritage. 32 189

Eleven years before his final voyage, the Roger Pirates had already crossed the Grand Line and reached Lodestar Island, but Roger understood that it was not the true final island. When his terminal illness left him with only a few years to live, he recruited Crocus to slow its progression and set out once more to find the destination. 174

Roger's final voyage took roughly three years. He learned that the four Road Poneglyphs pointed toward the final island, brought Kozuki Oden aboard to read them, infiltrated Whole Cake Island for a rubbing of Charlotte Linlin's Poneglyph, and recovered another from Zunesha. 201 202 He eventually returned to Fish-Man Island and accepted Nereus's rubbing of the final Road Poneglyph, despite feeling uneasy over the debt he incurred. 205 206

After reaching Laugh Tale, Roger received the title of Pirate King and the world's highest pirate bounty: 5.5648 billion Beli. The World Government simultaneously suppressed the “D.” in his name across bounty posters and press coverage. 207 With his goal achieved and illness worsening, Roger ordered the Roger Pirates' gradual disbandment and allowed crew members to return home or settle elsewhere. 209

Roger voluntarily surrendered to the Navy so that his public execution could launch a new era. At Loguetown, he declared that the One Piece was waiting at Laugh Tale, turning his death into the opening of the Great Pirate Era. 213 216 218

Instead of passing into the Underworld, Roger's soul was intercepted by Nereus and brought to the River of Death. He accepted a place in Nereus's planned undying legion, intended to oppose the Holy Knights. 217

Personality

Roger is driven by adventure rather than shortcuts. When Nereus offered to reveal the route to the final island, Roger refused because being given the answer would “lose its flavor”; he wanted to find it himself. 189

He keeps promises to his companions, including helping Crocus search for Brook, and generally respects local rules when they do not conflict with his goals. He avoids needless conflict, declining to fight Nereus on Fish-Man Island because the deep sea heavily favored his opponent and endangered his crew. 181 182

Despite his illness and eventual execution, Roger remains relaxed, teasing, and fond of drinking. He openly mocks the World Government's attempt to erase the “D.” from his name and faces execution smiling. 209 216 His surrender was a calculated act: he intended his final words to create an age of piracy rather than let the Navy define his legacy. 216 218
