Background / History

Whitebeard was among the core members assembled with the Rocks Pirates on Beehive Island before the God Valley incident. During the battle at God Valley, he clashed with Charlotte Linlin after one of his strikes nearly hit her while he was fighting a Holy Knight. 9 22

After God Valley, Whitebeard disappeared from Buckin’s sight and was later reported to have joined the pirate Paul Laggum. Laggum eventually dissolved his own crew and joined Whitebeard after two years of sailing with him. Neptune also boarded Whitebeard’s ship for protection against the dangers of the New World. 55 104

As the Great Pirate Era began, Whitebeard expanded his territory and became one of the New World’s dominant forces. His rule was comparatively mild: islands paid protection money, while his flag served as a deterrent against other pirates. 223

Whitebeard recognized the influence of Roger’s techniques in Ace’s hand-blade style, decisively defeated him, and allowed him to remain aboard the Moby Dick. Ace eventually joined the Whitebeard Pirates as Second Division Commander. 347 348

Summit War

When the Navy announced Ace’s public execution, Whitebeard mobilized his sixteen divisions and forty-three affiliated crews to bring him home. Before advancing on Marineford, he visited Nereus at Ryugu Palace. 356 364

Nereus restored Whitebeard’s youthful physical state, allowing him to suppress the burdens of age and illness despite not curing those conditions outright. Whitebeard then led his coated fleet beneath Marineford and emerged directly at Crescent Bay. 364 365

At Marineford, he used his tremor power to devastate the battlefield, tied down multiple Admirals, and directed the rescue operation around Ace. After Ace was freed, Whitebeard remained behind to cover the retreat of his “sons.” 365 369 371

Death and Legacy

Whitebeard fought the three Admirals alone while the Whitebeard Pirates escaped. He was ultimately defeated and killed, but his final declaration that the One Piece was real was broadcast across the world, driving a new surge of piracy. 371 372 375
