Background

Touma is the posthumous son of the late Konoha shinobi Dou Huan and the confectioner Takako. Dou Huan died covering his companions' retreat during an escort mission against rogue ninja; Sarutobi Hiruzen later visited Takako out of guilt and left a ninjutsu scroll for Touma. The scroll contained the Three Body Techniques, Body Flicker Technique, Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind, and Dou Huan's staff style. 1 8

Three years before the beginning of the story, Touma transmigrated into Konoha. He entered the Ninja Academy hoping to study cooking, but an aptitude examination placed him in Class A because of his ninja talent. Despite sharing the class with prominent clan heirs, he deliberately maintained average grades and a low profile. 1

His fortunes changed when the Super Entry Pickup System appeared. The system allowed him to perceive and extract traits from his surroundings; his first major acquisition was the Wood Style Creation trait lingering in an old Academy latrine. Realizing that exposure of his self-generated Wood Style chakra could make him a target for Danzō's experiments, Touma resolved to become strong enough to protect himself. 2

Despite this restraint, he does not hesitate to act when lives are at stake. He intervenes to protect Minato and Kushina, fights Kumogakure infiltrators, and repeatedly assumes responsibility for companions during dangerous missions. 4 5 32 44

He is an inventive researcher who treats basic techniques as material for improvement rather than fixed formulas. His willingness to experiment also gives him a reckless streak: modifying an ancient barrier without sufficient expertise accidentally teleports him to the Land of Islands. 9 23 47

Touma joins Team Shinku under Shinku Yuhi alongside Shibi and Kizashi. Sunny City Operations

During the Second Great Ninja War, Touma perfects Heavenly Storm Sky Dance and uses its elemental state to eliminate an ambushing Rain Ninja unit. He later leads three youngsters out of Sunny City using decoys, survives an ambush by Zhe Hidden Village rogue ninja, and destroys their Dead Soil army with Thunder Shock. 39 44

Separation, Sacred Land, and the Land of Lightning

While rescuing Lin Clan members and merchants from a giant salamander, Touma uses the Ten Thousand Snake Array to reverse-summon them to safety but is poisoned during his escape. He discovers an unknown Summoning Holy Land, accidentally awakens Sage Mode in its hot spring, and is teleported to the Land of Islands after altering its barrier. 46 47

After befriending an Umibozu and returning to the mainland, Touma infiltrates a slave ship bound for the Land of Lightning. He replaces the Ice Release user Yukie Sakura in a fighting tournament and acquires an Ice Release Bloodline Awakening trait to support his cover identity. 48 49 50
