Background / History

Tsunade leaves Konoha carrying deep resentment toward its upper ranks and the disappearance of the Senju clan. She retains the Senju clan's accumulated assets, including chakra-refinement knowledge and ninjutsu scrolls, rather than leaving them in Konoha. 14

While traveling with Shizune, Tsunade investigates the capture of Konoha children by Dongfang Mao's bandit group. Although disappointed in Konoha, she refuses to ignore children in danger and confronts Mao to secure their release. 2 3

Mao's use of bloodied men exploits Tsunade's hemophobia, but his threats enrage her enough to briefly overcome the condition. After recognizing his resemblance to Senju Yusuke, whom she knew, Tsunade reveals Mao's heritage and comes to sympathize with his childhood. 3 4 5

She promises to protect Mao and teach him ninjutsu, increasingly regarding him as a replacement for her lost brother Nawaki. 6 7
