Background / History

Dongfang Mao's regime was built from territories seized during the pacification of the Lands of Rice Fields and Fire. By the debate over a national name, it controlled forty-six cities and had already developed a functioning ministerial government. 99 109

During deliberations on the state's name, Luzhen proposed Yan, interpreting it as a symbol of unceasing expansion, reform, and the broad spread of civilization. Dongfang Mao accepted the proposal, named the country Great Yan, adopted Yanshi as its reign title, and took the title of King Yan. 99

Great Yan was formally proclaimed at a Heaven-worship ceremony in Chang'an City, formerly Kasumi Town. At the Altar of Land and Grain, Dongfang Mao announced the state's establishment and the beginning of the Yanshi era before officials, citizens, and foreign envoys. 109 110
