Story Role / Major Arcs
Mission Against Dongfang Mao
After Dongfang Mao's victories alarm the Land of Fire, Hiruzen assigns Minato to eliminate him. 48 Minato enters Tsukimiura with Obito, Rin, and Kakashi, investigates conflicting rumors, and tracks a possible source of accurate information. 50
He later infiltrates Dongfang Mao's prisoner camp disguised as a captive and launches an assassination attempt with the Rasengan. Dongfang Mao survives, identifies him, and uses the surrounding prisoners as leverage. 55
Obito, Rin, and Kakashi disobey Minato's instructions and enter the camp to help him. Minato is furious because Dongfang Mao is willing to threaten vast numbers of captives, while his students' arrival makes the situation even more dangerous. 56 He summons Toad Sho to extract Obito and Kakashi, but Rin is captured by Yasuke. 57 Minato retreats with Obito and Kakashi after refusing Dongfang Mao's demand that he kill himself for Rin's release. 58
Tsukimiura War
Minato returns to Konoha burdened by the failed mission and Rin's capture. Hiruzen reassures him, grants him the Flying Thunder God technique, and prepares to march on Tsukimiura. 64
As Konoha's forces suffer severe casualties from Dongfang Mao's night raid, Minato seeks to destroy Tsukimiura's cannons and leads an assault force against the city walls. 74 75 He fights Dongfang Mao alongside Konoha's jonin, summons Toad Sho against Katsuyu, and lands a Rasengan that Dongfang Mao heals through Creation Rebirth. 76
Dongfang Mao's White Phosphorus Fire Rain and subsequent chakra-attribute fusion leave Minato and Konoha's remaining forces facing an increasingly overwhelming opponent. 76 77 78
Path to the Hokage Position
Hiruzen protects Minato's standing after the Tsukimiura failure, suppressing public criticism while treating him as the intended successor. 106 When considering retirement, Hiruzen formally nominates Minato as the next Hokage; Minato expresses concerns about the Uchiha clan's influence but affirms his ability to lead Konoha through its crisis. 96
As the next Hokage, Minato refuses the Land of Wind's envoy's request for Konoha to intervene against Sunagakure's rebellion, maintaining that he must place Konoha's interests first. 131
Roran Incident
Minato and Kakashi are sent by Konoha to protect Queen Sara of Roran. They encounter Naruto Uzumaki, who has traveled from the future, and face Dongfang Mao amid revelations concerning a Konoha–Great Yan alliance treaty and Kakashi's alleged future betrayal. 119
