History

Konoha forces destroy Dongfang Mao’s bandit stronghold, leaving him cornered by three young Konoha ninja: Ueno Daiki, Nara Kazuma, and Yuhi Kurenai. Mao’s men capture the children before Tsunade and Shizune intervene. 1 2

Tsunade later allows Kazuma to remain with Mao, while Kurenai returns to Konoha with her mentor. The decision draws Hiruzen’s concern over the village’s reputation. 8

After Mao’s expansion threatens the Land of Fire’s political order, the Daimyo orders Konoha to eliminate him. Hiruzen assigns Minato to the mission, while maintaining some sympathy for Mao’s challenge to the Daimyo’s authority. 48

Konoha mobilizes 1,000 ninja for an expedition against Tsukimiura. Mao evacuates his administration, prepares artillery defenses, and waits for the army to encamp within cannon range. 69 71 73

The resulting bombardment devastates the Konoha camp with incendiary shrapnel and White Phosphorus shells. Minato orders Earth and Water Release barriers and ultimately commands a retreat. 74 The withdrawal leaves 279 genin and 43 chunin dead, with hundreds more severely wounded; several jonin are also lost. 75

Konoha’s weakened state invites invasion by Kumogakure and Iwagakure. Hiruzen responds by ordering the full mobilization of the village’s major clans. 82 The broader war eventually shifts into negotiations in the Land of Iron, where Konoha faces Dongfang Mao, Kumogakure, and Iwagakure from a position of weakness. 87 88
