Background / History
The Uchiha originated outside the Land of Fire, migrating there from the Land of Lightning. Their combat reputation was established during the Warring States period, and they later founded Konoha alongside the Senju. Their village compound retained Warring States-era architecture designed to let members assemble quickly during an invasion 2 3 4 56.
The clan did not follow Madara despite his overwhelming strength. Setsuna, who had followed him personally, later treats this as proof that strength alone cannot secure the clan's loyalty. Before Yuji's takeover, the Uchiha were divided into doves, hawks, and neutral factions, with shifting policies that prevented anyone from consistently representing the whole clan 1 2 48.
Under the Third Hokage, Uchiha elites served on particularly grueling battlefields while the clan also maintained village policing. Yuji argues that police work had become a means of isolating them: enforcing unpopular decisions damaged their reputation, while distrust from the Hokage faction encouraged distrust among villagers 2 4.
Organization and Culture
Leadership and Factions
- Traditional authority: Only the clan head and elders ordinarily have the right to convene a clan meeting 1.
- Yuji's takeover: Younger members and elite middle-aged shinobi support him before his confrontation with the elders. Toshihiko places a kunai against his own father Setsuna's throat during the challenge 1.
- Centralized command: Yuji's leadership replaces factional indecision with a clear direction. Fugaku, previously expected to become the next head, willingly leaves judgment to Yuji and concentrates on carrying out orders 23 48.
- Leadership through more than strength: Setsuna explicitly questions how Yuji united members whom Madara's power had failed to win over 2.
Values and Internal Welfare
The Uchiha are proud, blunt, and frequently combative toward outsiders, but notably generous toward their own members. Yuji, whose parents died early, was raised through clan assistance and subsidies. He considers their internal relationships relatively harmonious compared with those of other ninja clans 19.
Battlefield achievement is central to the clan's identity. Setsuna rejects catching thieves as their true glory, while members eagerly prepare to fight when Yuji threatens renewed war with Kumogakure. Under his leadership, their confidence increasingly mirrors his assertiveness 2 24 48.
- Small population: High childhood mortality during the Warring States period limited the clan's numbers; later families increasingly adopted a “one is enough” attitude toward children 74.
- Bloodline planning: Members hope that combining Uchiha ocular abilities with Uzumaki chakra reserves will produce exceptionally powerful descendants. Setsuna also urges Yuji to marry Mikoto to strengthen the clan's hereditary abilities 74.
- Emotional bonds: The narrative describes the Uchiha as a “clan of love,” linking the loss of loved ones and extreme despair to Sharingan awakening and exceptional power 30.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
- Dynamic vision: Three-tomoe Sharingan can track extremely fast attacks and make sudden weapon strikes difficult to land 13 84.
- Copying: The eyes can replicate observed ninjutsu and taijutsu; accumulated copied techniques contribute to the clan's extensive instructional resources 14 17.
- Genjutsu: Uchiha members subdue the Kumogakure delegation with three-tomoe genjutsu and surround Kitsuchi with overlapping ocular threats to capture him alive 24 35.
- Chakra cost for outsiders: A transplanted Sharingan that cannot be deactivated continually consumes its user's chakra 71.
Mangekyō Sharingan
- Rare, prestigious power: Clan archives call it “The Power of God”; Setsuna ranks it alongside Wood Release among the greatest abilities he has witnessed 1.
- Individual techniques: Yuji's left eye creates an independent world, while his right grants control over that space. Maintaining and manipulating it consumes substantial chakra 4.
- Vision restoration knowledge: Madara passes a method for restoring Mangekyō vision to Yuji 87.
- Not universally effective: Yuji finds his ocular techniques and genjutsu difficult to use against the Third Raikage 13.
Susanoo
- Chakra construct: Provides large-scale defense and weaponry, but its strength and available forms vary between users 13 85 98.
- Breakable defenses: The Third Raikage destroys Yuji's earlier Susanoo, and Hiruzen's Five Elements barrage dismantles its third-stage form 13 52.
- Exceptional manifestation: Madara summons Susanoo while possessing only three-tomoe eyes, contrary to the stated expectation that two Mangekyō are required 85.
- Later users: Fugaku deploys it against Ōnoki, while Yuji develops both a flying, two-hundred-meter form and the Hyper Zetton Larva Form 107 109 115.
Fire Release and Combat Training
- Basic clan technique: Great Fireball is treated as elementary Uchiha ninjutsu and taught to civilian shinobi through the clan's training program 22.
- Advanced Fire Release: Madara and Yuji both use Majestic Destroyer Flame 84 85.
- Combat specialization: The clan has a long-standing reputation for protection and assassination missions. Despite the Sharingan's copying ability, ordinary members generally do not specialize in taijutsu as heavily as Yuji 7 14.
- Resource management: Uchiha accompanying Yuji into enemy territory conserve chakra by relying on genjutsu rather than his high-output fighting methods 32.
Resources and Equipment
- Business holdings: Owns multiple industries, two or three streets outside the compound, and assets elsewhere in the Land of Fire. Medicine is identified as a comparatively weak field 7.
- Ninjutsu collection: Possesses inherited techniques, copied techniques, and improved versions of standard ninjutsu 17 21.
- Financial aid: Offers low-interest loans and affordable training to villagers and civilian shinobi 21.
- Targeted sponsorship: Toshihiko offers Might Duy additional subsidies for food, medicinal herbs, and injury recovery, alongside a proposed ten-million-ryō loan 21.
- Uchiha Flame Gunbai: An ancestral weapon bearing three-tomoe designs on both sides. Madara uses it to reflect Fire Release, then gives it to Yuji after losing their duel 85.
- Compound: Serves as the clan's gathering place and a distribution point for Kumogakure's peace supplies 3 24.
Notable Members

- Uchiha Kagami — Predecessor whom Hiruzen praises; Yuji alleges that Root harmed him despite his trust in his teammates 17.
Relationships
- Senju Clan — Fellow founders of Konoha; Hashirama and Madara's conflict forms an earlier precedent for clashes between Uchiha leaders and Hokage 4 50.
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Political opponent who refuses Yuji's requests for Anbu and team-leading jōnin posts; their conflict eventually ends in a fatal duel 17 50 54.
- Shimura Danzō / Root — Hostile faction that attacks the compound and tries to brand the Uchiha as rebels; Yuji kills Danzō 3 5 6.
- Hatake Sakumo — Battlefield commander supported by the clan as a prospective Hokage, valued for placing comrades above missions 30 37 48.
- Ino–Shika–Chō — Distances itself from Hiruzen and publicly aligns with the Uchiha's momentum when Inoichi agrees to examine the dead Hokage's memories 50 54.
- Konoha civilians and civilian shinobi — Initially resentful of Uchiha policing; become beneficiaries of loans, instruction, and distributed peace supplies 18 21 22 24.
- Land of Fire Daimyō — Long-standing strained relationship rooted in mutual contempt and the clan's refusal to defer readily to noble authority 56.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Withdrawal from the Police Force
Yuji's first major reform is to abandon police duties. The sudden disappearance of patrols alarms villagers, who interpret it as evidence that Konoha is losing the war. During Hiruzen's visit to the compound, Root attacks, and Yuji publicly announces the clan's resignation before killing Danzō. He explicitly rejects the idea that these actions amount to leaving Konoha 2 3 5 6 7.
Civilian Outreach and Institutional Access
After rescuing Kushina from Cloud shinobi, Yuji seeks broader village roles for his clansmen. Hiruzen rejects the initial requests, but the Uchiha respond by opening inexpensive ninjutsu classes and issuing loans. Their success undermines the claim that they cannot teach, and Fugaku prepares nominations for Academy instructors and graduating-team leaders 9 10 17 21 22 23.
War Merit and Foreign Relations
The clan humiliates the Kumogakure delegation, then distributes its supplies among Konoha's villagers. Later, a force composed largely of elite Uchiha jōnin enters the Land of Earth under Sakumo. Yuji forces Ōnoki to surrender, and the Uchiha contingent subsequently cooperates with Iwagakure against the Cloud shinobi 24 37 42 43.
Confrontation with the Hokage
Yuji avoids directly attacking Konoha because doing so could isolate the clan and leave rebellion or migration as its only options. Instead, he challenges Hiruzen at the Valley of the End. After winning, he orders the Yamanaka to investigate Hiruzen's memories, turning military victory into a public reckoning with the Hokage faction 48 50 54.
Unification and the Madara Rivalry
Madara initially hopes to use Yuji, but loses their first duel and transfers the clan's ancestral weapon to him. Their competing peace plans remain unresolved: Yuji favors unifying the villages, while Madara insists on the Eye of the Moon Plan. Madara later returns through Impure World Reincarnation to oppose him; by Chapter 124, he increasingly admires Yuji's handling of the unified world's affairs 33 85 87 114 124.
