Background / History

Childhood in the Xiao Clan

Gu Yuan sent Xun'er to the Xiao Clan while she was very young, partly to locate the Tou She Ancient God Jade. Xiao Zhan alone initially knew that she came from a powerful Central Plains clan. Her stay was supposed to last ten years, but she remained beyond that period and subsequently attended Jia Nan Academy 263 307.

Xiao Yu stayed close to her from her arrival and secretly used Dou Qi to nourish her body at night. By the opening chapter, she knew his habits well enough to find him at his usual retreat whenever he was unhappy 1. Her later account of childhood reveals that she also persuaded Ling Ying to guard the Xiao Clan from its outskirts rather than remain immediately beside her 763.

Early Relationship with Xiao Yu

Xun'er and Xiao Yu openly favored one another while growing up in Wu Tan City. When the Misty Cloud Sect proposed transferring Nalan Yanran’s engagement from Xiao Yan to Xiao Yu, Xun'er tightened her grip on his hand and declared that only he occupied her heart. Xiao Yu rejected the marriage 4 5.

She also tried to support his cultivation by offering the Xuan Tier High-Grade Playful Flame Art. He declined because he already possessed a better cultivation method 11. Before their separation, Xiao Yu revealed that he knew she belonged to the Ancient Clan and asked her to arrange protection for his father during his absence 20.

Jia Nan Academy

Xun'er left for Jia Nan Academy while Xiao Yu pursued his own training. Although she became eligible for the Inner Academy Selection Tournament a year before his return, she postponed entering because she wanted to wait for him 24 185.

During their separation, she received reports about his movements and the Soul Hall’s suspected activity near the Jia Ma Empire. She ordered Ling Ying to protect the Xiao Clan, particularly Xiao Zhan, and insisted that Xiao Yu not discover the surveillance 118.

After their reunion, Xiao Yu admitted his relationship with Yun Yun and explained the circumstances surrounding their daughter, Xiao Nian. Xun'er was hurt by his confession, but his reassurance and the child’s laughter helped ease her sadness 184 185. She subsequently qualified for the Inner Academy and independently overcame the Heart Flame’s initial assault in the Heavenly Flame Refining Qi Tower 193 217.

Supporting the Underworld

Xun'er arranged a private meeting between Xiao Yu and Ling Ying, enabling Xiao Yu to recruit the elder for his concealed force, the Underworld. Ling Ying agreed to find and train young people with the Dark Attribute; Xun'er later reported that he had found five orphans 193 197 227.

She also served as a messenger between Xiao Yu and the Ancient Clan. At his request, she asked Ling Ying to relay a proposal for opposing the Soul Hall and invited Gu Yuan to the Black Corner Region 255.

Return to the Gu Realm

Gu Yuan eventually visited Jia Nan Academy and told Xun'er to return home. He explained that the Northwest Continent’s sparse natural energy could not provide what she needed to awaken her bloodline and clan mark. Despite her reluctance to leave Xiao Yu, she accepted her responsibilities as the clan leader’s daughter 265.

Before their separation, Xiao Yu promised to visit the Ancient Clan within two years. The two shared an intimate night at their familiar waterfall, and she subsequently returned to the Gu Realm 280 282 307.

Xun'er later sought him out in the Wind Thunder Mountain Range, accompanied by two elders and Black Annihilation Army personnel. She reproached him for reaching the Central Plains without visiting her 494. During this period, she became You Quan’s teacher and eventually took the girl and her sister back to the Ancient Clan, promising to guide their cultivation 520 539.

Marriage Dispute and Independence

When Xiao Yu formally sought her hand, Ancient Clan elders invoked the rule against her marrying outside the clan. Gu Yuan acknowledged that Xiao Yu’s Dou Sheng cultivation placed him beyond that restriction, but began setting further requirements 582.

Xun'er interrupted the discussion and rejected any conditions imposed on their relationship. She reminded her father that she had already obeyed his decisions about her childhood placement, return from Jia Nan Academy, and restricted contact with Xiao Yu. Gu Yuan then agreed that the Ancient Clan would not interfere in their relationship 583.

She later supported Xiao Zhan’s request to restore the Xiao Clan’s two Heavenly Tomb places, even suggesting compensation for the Ancient Clan’s long use of them 615. After learning that the Soul Clan might target Xiao Yu, she requested permission to leave and joined him at the Ancient Relic with Gu Nan Hai 616 621.

Flame Refinement and the Heavenly Tomb

Xun'er wanted to fight beside Xiao Yu rather than remain dependent on him or the Ancient Clan. She therefore returned to inherit the Golden Emperor Burning Heaven Flame, but its power became unstable during absorption. With Gu Yuan’s permission, Xiao Yu entered her seclusion chamber and used the Chaos Flame to help her regain control 625 628 629.

At her coming-of-age ceremony, her bloodline tested at Divine Grade—the first such result in the Ancient Clan for a thousand years. The result established her standing through her own bloodline rather than merely her father’s position 631.

In the Heavenly Tomb, she repeatedly fought dangerous energy bodies to accelerate her growth. She killed three Half-Saints despite suffering serious injuries, insisted on continuing after treatment, and ultimately reached Two-Star Dou Sheng 633 635 637.

Later Conflicts and the Great Thousand World

Inside the Bodhi Ancient Tree’s illusion realm, Xun'er experienced an effortless future in which she married Xiao Yu. She rejected it in favor of the real person and their shared hardships, breaking free of the illusion 648. As the Soul Clan threat intensified, she also helped Xiao Yu reinforce Space Wormholes alongside Zi Yan and the Underworld’s elders 670.

In the Great Thousand World, Xun'er and Gu Yuan were imprisoned with their cultivation sealed. After Xiao Yu freed them, the Futuo Ancient Clan claimed them as blood relatives and attempted to prevent their departure. Both rejected that claim, and Xiao Yu forced the clan to let them leave 721.

Xun'er later entered the Ancient Heavenly Palace with Xiao Yu’s other companions, carrying a protective jade talisman 741. During preparations for the Heavenly Evil God’s return, she was among the wives Xiao Yu gathered to assist his final cultivation method. Her last supplied appearance places her in his arms in Great Luo Heaven, recalling their childhood 759 763.

To Ancient Clan members, Xun'er appears distant, cold, and difficult to approach. With Xiao Yu, she is affectionate, playful, easily embarrassed, and willing to tease him about his shamelessness 190 495 660.

Her protectiveness can override deference to authority. She redirects her own guards to protect the Xiao Clan, challenges her father when he pressures Xiao Yu, and breaks through her escorts’ spatial barrier rather than remain outside while Xiao Yu faces danger 118 266 502.

Xun'er is also proud of her own talent and unwilling to live solely under another person’s protection. Her desire to stand beside Xiao Yu drives her secluded cultivation and dangerous combat training. Although she obeys many clan decisions, she draws a firm boundary when the elders attempt to control her marriage 539 583 625 635.
