Background / History
Lion grew up as a savage survivor in the forests of Caliban. Luther and his order taught him language, etiquette, clothing, and civilization; Lion later regarded Luther with both gratitude for changing his life and hatred for his role in the Caliban rebellion. 595
As master of the First Legion, Lion was entrusted with forbidden weapons, exterminatus relics, and the duty of considering how to destroy threats to humanity before they became uncontrollable. This role cultivated his habit of secrecy, contingency planning, and suspicion. 503
The destruction of Caliban fractured Lion’s relationship with many of his sons. Lion had attacked after receiving information that Caliban was corrupted by Chaos and that his own ships were under fire, while the newly armed recruits on Caliban believed their gene-father had betrayed them and counterattacked. Neither Lion nor the surviving Fallen Angels can fully reconstruct the event’s true cause. 495
Appearance
Lion is an enormous, weathered Primarch with white hair and a beard. He is physically imposing even beside Space Marines, and his presence is immediately recognizable to those familiar with the Primarchs. 505 609 1056
- Nearly four metres tall. 524
- Wears knightly dark-green armor.
- His helmet has two wings attached at its sides. 497
- Carries the Emperor’s Shield, which he recovered during one of his unconscious wanderings. 497
Personality
Before his ten-thousand-year slumber, Lion was volatile, secretive, and prone to answering hostility with greater hostility. He was not needlessly murderous, but his inability to understand others’ feelings, communicate his intentions, or recognize resentment made his leadership cold and destructive. 600
After awakening, Lion becomes markedly more restrained. He listens to Zabriel and the Fallen Angels rather than immediately fighting them, accepts that violence can conceal rather than solve problems, and attempts to build a more obedient yet stable relationship with the Dark Angels. 495 595
His caution remains central to his character. Lion instinctively considers worst-case scenarios, distrusts unchecked power and secret diplomacy, and struggles to extend trust even to Guilliman and Qin Mo. 503 526 689 Despite this, he has developed empathy for civilians, concern for his mortal guards, and a willingness to accept assistance when the burden of command exceeds what one commander can manage. 498 595 1067
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology and Combat
Lion possesses overwhelming strength, speed, endurance, and close-combat skill.
- Dodged bolter fire, cracked Zabriel’s ceramite helmet with restrained blows, and pinned the Space Marine one-handed. 490
- Fought the Star God known as the Deceiver at close range, learned its attack patterns during the battle, and landed multiple blows with the Emperor’s Shield. 501
- Fought Orks bare-handed when he reached the Space Wolves’ battlefield without armor or weapons. 586
- He acknowledges a minute physical decline after ten thousand years of sleep, though it does not significantly impair his combat ability. 501 502
Warp Teleportation
Lion awakened a signature teleportation ability after accepting his Warp nature. 706
- Initially manifested as unconscious, uncontrolled teleportation. 502
- Can transport himself and a limited group; he judged that he could carry twenty New Thunder Warriors to the Ark of Olytarr. 706
- The ability later becomes passive, without changing Lion into a radically different being. 871
- His first deliberate use sent him to an unintended battlefield before his subconscious returned him, demonstrating that control was initially incomplete. 706
Strategic Command
Lion is an accomplished battlefield commander whose plans range from tactical maneuvers to Imperium-wide war management.
- Coordinated with Guilliman during the laboratory siege, using diversions and flanking tactics to delay enemy forces. 723
- Ordered the construction of Blackstone Obelisks to secure occupied territory and support future offensives. 775
- Directed fleet bombardments, encirclements, and multiple simultaneous war zones during the Traitor Iron Ring campaign. 930
- During the Necron war, he accepted Grey’s AI assistance and delegated separate fronts to one hundred simulated versions of himself while retaining overall strategic command. 1067
Leadership and Training
Lion can rapidly turn civilians into an organized fighting force.
- Trained the awakened population of the Deceiver-controlled world in weapon use under psychic protection. 500
- Led hundreds of thousands of recruits against the planetary capital to force a confrontation with the Deceiver. 500
- Founded the Lion Guard from the planet’s elite mortals and later arranged for their safety rather than sending them against threats beyond mortal capability. 503 595
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Emperor’s Shield — A shield associated with the Emperor; Lion used it to withstand the Deceiver’s lightning and strike the Star God in close combat. 497 501
- Dark-green knightly armor — A new suit of armor with a winged helmet; the Deceiver temporarily twisted it into a cage during their battle. 497 501
- Tyran medical device — A triangular diagnostic device Lion used to determine that a Tech-Priest died of cardiac arrest caused by extreme fear. 498
- Lion Guard — An elite mortal retinue personally selected by Lion to accompany him to Terra. 503
Relationships
- The Emperor — Lion’s father and the source of his identity as the First Primarch. The Emperor reveals that Caliban’s destruction prevented the merger of three artifacts and entrusts Lion with deciding the Tyran Sector’s fate. 527
- Roboute Guilliman — Brother, rival, and fellow Imperial leader. Their reunion begins with an argument and physical clash over the breaking of the Legions, but Guilliman persuades Lion to serve as Warmaster; the two later cooperate despite enduring suspicion. 512 603
- Zabriel — A Fallen Angel and Lion’s son. Their reunion begins in violence and mutual accusations of betrayal, but they reconcile after discussing Caliban; Lion promises to clear the names of Fallen Angels who remained loyal to humanity. 490 495 588
- Azrael — Leader of the Dark Angels. Azrael accepts Lion’s authority, supports his orders concerning dimensional engines and the Fallen Angels, and leads costly assaults at Lion’s command. 602 930
- Luther — Lion’s former mentor on Caliban. Luther civilized Lion, but his rebellion helped bring about Caliban’s destruction and the Legion’s collapse. 595
- Qin Mo — The Lord of Tyran. Qin Mo saves Lion from the Deceiver by capturing the Star God, later joins Lion’s teleportation mission, and remains a figure Lion respects without fully trusting. 501 706 938
- The Lion Guard — Mortal attendants and soldiers selected from Karis’s elite. Lion values their loyalty but intends to place them in governorships or Chapter support roles rather than expose them to daemonic and Star God-level threats. 503 595
Story Role / Major Arcs
Awakening on Karis
Lion wakes in Karis’s forests with fragmented memories and temporarily calls himself “Leman.” After killing a massive beast to save the hunters Sutik and Halin, he learns that he is in the Tyran Sector and begins recovering memories of his past. 489
He reaches Karis’s fortress city and reunites with Zabriel, who believes Lion betrayed Caliban. Lion subdues Zabriel without killing him, then meets nineteen Fallen Angels and chooses discussion over the violence they expect from their gene-father. 490 495
The Deceiver’s Planet
After waking outside the Tyran Gate, Lion discovers a world ruled through fear: its population believes that speaking, cooking, and procreation summon punishment. He determines that the victims are dying of fear rather than demonic attack and identifies the Governor as the Star God called the Deceiver. 497 498
Lion organizes the awakened population, trains them into an army, and attacks the planetary capital to draw out the Deceiver. He survives a direct battle with the Star God long enough for Qin Mo to arrive and imprison it in a Hypercube Maze. 500 501
Return to Terra and Appointment as Warmaster
Following the Deceiver’s defeat, Lion establishes a Council of Thirteen to govern the liberated planet, creates the mortal Lion Guard, and declares that any Ecclesiarchy vessel bearing the First Legion banner is his flagship. 503
He arrives on Terra without ceremony, confronts Guilliman over the dissolution of the First Legion, and ultimately accepts the position of Imperial Warmaster. 512
Reforming the Dark Angels
Lion initially hesitates to face the Dark Angels because of their fractured history, internal factions, and legacy of the Fallen. He later acknowledges that killing dissent merely buried problems until they exploded. 589 595
He pardons Fallen Angels loyal to humanity, plans to place returning loyalists in his Lion Guard, accepts Primaris reinforcements, and establishes five new companies before distributing Primaris warriors among veteran squads. 603
Later Campaigns
Lion employs his teleportation ability during the Eye of Terror expedition and leads a small strike team toward the Ark of Olytarr. 706
During wars against Chaos and Necron forces, he directs Legion-scale operations, makes costly strategic decisions, and accepts AI-assisted command simulations to manage numerous fronts against Imotekh’s forces. 930 1067
