As soul power surged, the Light Dragon Blade in Xie Xie's left hand burst forth from the light, while the Shadow Dragon Dagger in his right hand coalesced within the shadows.
With both Light Shadow Dragon Daggers manifested, Xie Xie's speed skyrocketed, his entire form transforming into a streak of light and shadow as he lunged straight for Gu Yue.
Yet Gu Yue stood there blankly, as if she hadn't even reacted.
The Light Dragon Blade swept horizontally, and the century-old soul ring beneath Xie Xie's feet lit up.
A golden blade-glow, accompanied by the roar of a dragon, tore through the air, aiming directly for Gu Yue's shoulder.
Just as the blade-glow was about to strike, Xie Xie's figure suddenly blurred, reappearing like a ghost at Gu Yue's side as the Shadow Dragon Dagger thrust toward her vitals.
Just when everyone thought Gu Yue was finished, she finally moved.
A gust of wind suddenly whipped up beneath Gu Yue's feet, and a wind blade struck the blade-glow with precision, blowing it off course so it landed on empty space. Simultaneously, the earth beneath her rose, and a wall of soil blocked her side.
The thrust of the Shadow Dragon Dagger slammed solidly into that earthen wall.
Immediately after, Xie Xie saw the green light around Gu Yue suddenly turn red, and a fireball the size of a fist exploded right before his eyes.
He instantly released the Shadow Dragon Dagger embedded in the wall, kicked off the wall with both feet to gain momentum, and as he soared into mid-air, he twisted his waist, spinning his body horizontally.
The smaller fireballs that split off from the explosion grazed his face, scorching a few strands of his hair.
As soon as his toes touched the ground, Xie Xie retreated rapidly to put some distance between them.
Seeing Xie Xie unscathed, a flash of surprise crossed Gu Yue's eyes.
Wu Zhangkong, watching from the sidelines, looked thoughtful.
The mastery of wind, fire, and ice elements Gu Yue had just displayed was enough to make Wu Zhangkong want to take her on as a disciple.
And now, Gu Yue was finally getting serious.
Elements surged around her; wind blades rained down, fireballs linked together, earth spikes erupted, and ice spikes volleyed in a four-sided encirclement.
The overwhelming elemental assault instantly sealed off all of Xie Xie's room for evasion.
Howling winds tore through the air, fireballs crashed down with scorching heatwaves, sharp earth spikes constantly rose from the ground, and ice spikes shot in from all directions with bone-chilling cold.
Xie Xie's face fell. You've got to be kidding me?
There was no time to think; the golden glow of the Light Dragon Blade in his hand flared violently.
He hacked apart the incoming wind blades, fireballs, and ice spikes while barely dodging the surprise earth spikes, his terrifying speed leaving a trail of afterimages in his wake.
Xie Xie was having a minor breakdown.
His arms were swinging so fast they were practically smoking, his legs felt like they were about to snap, and yet, how was Gu Yue's soul power like a bottomless pit? She was throwing elemental attacks at him as if they didn't cost any soul power at all!
In the midst of the chaos, Xie Xie snatched a glance at Gu Yue.
Well, her little face was slightly pale.
The battle had been deadlocked for nearly a minute; Gu Yue was clearly suffering from significant exhaustion, her soul power fluctuations growing unstable, and her fierce elemental offensive suddenly faltered for a moment.
Xie Xie's eyes sharpened, and he instantly seized this fleeting opening.
Light and shadow flashed around him as he teleported behind Gu Yue once more.
The golden glow of the Light Dragon Blade flared again, slashing down with a sharp whistling sound, while the Shadow Dragon Dagger simultaneously gathered strength at her side, ready to seal off all her escape routes.
He had poured almost all of his current explosive power into this single strike.
The Light Dragon Blade descended with a fierce gust, yet the Gu Yue before him still hadn't reacted.
Xie Xie's heart tightened.
Did she run out of soul power just now, and now she doesn't have the strength to defend?
Damn it, if I land this strike, I might actually kill her!
Just as Xie Xie hesitated, Gu Yue suddenly turned around, a cunning arc playing on her lips, and raised her hand to blast a fireball directly at Xie Xie at point-blank range.
Xie Xie was stunned senseless on the spot, his hair instantly turning into an afro.
Immediately after, he felt the ground beneath his feet go soft, and he sank straight into the earth.
There stood Xie Xie, sporting an afro, his mouth cracked open, a wisp of black smoke drifting out. He was planted in the ground just like a radish.
Gu Yue clapped her hands in satisfaction, not forgetting to flash a peace sign.
Wu Zhangkong nodded. "Very well, the victor is decided. Congratulations to Gu Yue for becoming a member of First Grade, Class Five."
"I don't accept this... mmmph!"
Before Xie Xie could struggle and howl a few more words, his mouth was stuffed full of dirt.
Gu Yue crouched halfway in front of Xie Xie, blinking her eyes, her tone full of mischief: "You don't accept it? Then keep it bottled up."
Xie Xie struggled with muffled noises, his eyes wide, yet he was unable to move, forced to glare at Gu Yue with indignation.
The surrounding students had long since been unable to hold back their laughter, their shoulders shaking as they covered their mouths.
Even the usually cold-faced Wu Zhangkong paused slightly, a faint trace of a smile flitting across his eyes.
Xie Xie was trembling with rage, twisting his body desperately to try and climb out of the dirt, but the more he struggled, the deeper he sank. After tossing and turning for a long time, he only managed to spit out the dirt in his mouth:
"Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey--!"
Xie Xie regained his breath, gasping heavily as he glared at Gu Yue and shouted in exasperation, "You cheated! This young master won't—"
Before he could finish, a faint yellow glow flickered at Gu Yue's fingertips.
"This young master—couldn't possibly be anything but convinced!"
"I am completely convinced, in every way possible!" Xie Xie's expression shifted faster than a flipping book, and he looked at Gu Yue with a fawning smile. "Lord Gu Yue is brilliant and peerless! So, could you please let this little one out of the dirt first?"
Gu Yue nodded in satisfaction, waved her right hand, and let out a soft hum: "Granted!"
Xie Xie immediately felt the soil around him loosen and scrambled out of the ground, rolling and crawling as he went.
He patted the dirt off his body, his hair a messy, frizzy disaster, looking utterly disheveled.
Seeing that Gu Yue was caught off guard, Xie Xie's eyes darted around, a wicked grin instantly spreading across his face. He grabbed a handful of mud and hurled it directly at Gu Yue's face, scoring a perfect headshot.
Before Gu Yue could react, he turned and bolted, running while looking back to make faces and shouting cheekily:
"Nyah nyah nyah, come and hit me if you can, come and hit me!"
Gu Yue: "..."
She silently wiped the mud from her face, veins throbbing on her forehead as flames roared to life around her, causing her high ponytail to lift into the air.
"Very. Good." Gu Yue gritted out through her teeth.
She raised her hand to manipulate the wind and fire elements, sending several wind blades and fireballs chasing after Xie Xie.
"Holy crap!"
Xie Xie looked back, instantly increasing his speed.
"If you've got the guts, don't run!"
"I don't have the guts, so I'm running!"
Watching the two of them causing a scene, Wu Zhangkong shook her head, simply picking up the recommendation letter Gu Yue had dropped on the ground.
"Elemental Envoy?"
After a cursory glance, Wu Zhangkong walked toward the Academic Affairs Office, lost in thought.
Every class was in session at this hour, leaving the hallways of the teaching building completely empty.
Arriving at the door of the Academic Affairs Office, Wu Zhangkong paused for a moment, pondered briefly, and then knocked on the door.
Knock, knock—
"Come in!" Long Hengxu's voice rang out.
Wu Zhangkong pushed the door open and entered.
Long Hengxu had been stewing in anger, his mind already cycling through countless ways to discipline Wu Zhangkong.
That damn Wu Zhangkong, she's infuriating!
Arrogant, conceited, and completely lacking in manners! That Xie Xie she teaches is exactly the same; sooner or later, I'll make her bow her head and apologize to me!!
The moment the words left his mouth, he saw Wu Zhangkong herself standing there.
He froze for a second, then said with a cold face, "Oh, isn't this Teacher Wu? To what do I owe the pleasure of your grand arrival?"
Wu Zhangkong walked two steps to Long Hengxu's desk and bowed slightly.
"I'm sorry, Director Long. I've come to apologize to you."
Long Hengxu: ...Did my dream just come true?
