Geography & Environment

Nuceria is the sole habitable planet in its system; the system's other worlds are Death Worlds, though they contain valuable rare minerals 153.

• Its soil and deserts are crimson, giving the planet a red appearance from orbit 401.
• Much of its terrain is either red-sand wasteland or frozen wilderness 449.
• The northern hemisphere was once a desert-nomad-themed entertainment zone and remains home to giant desert worms; High Knights used to throw captives into the worms for amusement 49.
• Nuceria Secundus, the second moon, was thought uninhabited until the World Eaters discovered a surviving native population there 121.
• Desia City contains the former arena district, later remade into an entertainment area hosting regular gladiatorial matches 302.

History

Theme-World Era

Over nineteen thousand years before the uprising, Nuceria was operated as a theme park by the Nuceria entertainment company. Genetically enhanced human employees played the roles of gladiators and decadent nobles, while Stone Men such as Braun were created as non-baseline staff to support the park's scenarios 49.

The theme world possessed sophisticated security systems intended to defend the colony from xenos threats. These included Iron Men, drones, advanced weapons, biological technologies, and orbital infrastructure 8 90.

Rise of the High-Riders

Following the collapse of the old civilization, the theme park's security forces used their superior weaponry to declare themselves nobles and enslave the remaining population. Over time, Nuceria's people forgot their former civilization and the planet became a slave society dominated by the High-Riders 49.

The High-Riders monopolized ancient technology while maintaining control through Praetorian Guards, Security Automata, Iron Men, gladiatorial arenas, and public terror. To enslaved gladiators, the High-Riders were effectively “the gods of Nuceria” 8 17.

Nuceria's arenas transformed human suffering into entertainment. Gladiators were captured, forced into lethal matches, monitored by the Maggot Eye broadcast drone, and treated as disposable property unless audience demand made them valuable 3 22 54.

Nucerian Uprising

Qin Xa first arrived on Nuceria after being confronted by local captors who did not recognize the Imperial Aquila. Though he killed several attackers, a tranquilizer dart's anesthetic gas incapacitated him and led to his capture 3.

Within the arena, Qin Xa encountered Angron and other gladiators. Their escape movement became the City-Swallower rebellion, which united gladiators, former slaves, and local resistance groups against the High-Riders and Praetorian Guard 64 99 101.

The capture of Mahe City's Orbital Elevator broke the High-Riders' control over Nuceria Prime. As the rebellion advanced, the High-Riders fled toward Nuceria Secundus, while their forces in the cities collapsed or were defeated by local rebels before the City-Swallowers arrived 96 107 108.

By the time the War Hounds reached the system, Angron had already unified Nuceria and driven the slave masters to the second moon 113.

Post-Liberation Administration

After the uprising, Angron replaced emergency wartime controls with a centralized administration led by an Archon. The Archon coordinated policy, while specialized bureaucratic bodies managed the economy, military, and welfare 133.

Angron personally selected the first officials according to their suitability for specific work rather than giving every position to ideological allies. Schools were established to train future administrators for Nuceria and worlds brought under its influence 133.

A later mortal governor was removed after Angron uncovered decisions shaped by family and personal interests. A Space Marine familiar with Nuceria's administration was appointed as the new governor 437.

Nuceria Prime

Nuceria Prime is Nuceria's first moon and principal industrial partner. Its inhabitants are organized through a Labor Council founded on the principle of sharing hardship, prosperity, life, and death equally 81 96.

• Nuceria Prime supplied production capacity, weapons, warships, and Silver Vine for the World Eaters 97 133.
• The High-Riders formerly controlled Nuceria Prime through Mahe City's Orbital Elevator 82.
• The Olena Sisters negotiated cooperation with Qin Xa on behalf of Nuceria Prime, demanding that its people never again be sent to Nuceria as tribute or playthings 81 82.
• Despite its strategic production role, Nuceria Prime retained self-government under the Labor Council 133.

Gladiatorial Tradition

Gladiatorial combat was originally the core of the High-Riders' entertainment system, built upon lethal matches and the public spectacle of slave suffering 5 54.

Angron and Qin Xa retained the practice after liberation but changed its purpose. Gladiators became professional athletes rather than disposable slaves, and matches were intended to avoid permanent injury or death 108.

The annual Global Gladiatorial Tournament became both a planetary competition and a selection system for prospective World Eaters recruits. Teams from any village, city, or inhabited region could compete for a place in the final matches at Desia Arena 133 343.

Symbols and Beliefs

• City-Swallower — Originally a High-Rider propaganda image depicting iron teeth biting into the Fortress Territory. It was reclaimed as a symbol of hope in occupied regions and gratitude in liberated ones 99.
• The Two Divine Lords — A popular Nucerian interpretation of prophecy identifying Angron as a demigod and Qin Xa as a mighty sorcerer who would deliver the planet and establish a new order 107 345.
• Direct use of names — A custom originating among enslaved Nucerians, where addressing someone by name indicates closeness and respect. It later spread through the World Eaters 374.
• Bald hairstyles — Many Nucerians favor shaved heads because High Knights once prohibited slaves from cutting their hair 472.
• Hostility toward desertion — Nucerian military culture strongly condemns deserters and can even stigmatize survivors, a tendency Qin Xa openly criticized 603.

Role in the Nuceria Sector

Nuceria grew from a single liberated planet into the center of a larger Nuceria Sector. Angron eventually completed the sector's integration, which encompassed thousands of worlds, though it had fewer major worlds than Ultramar 346.

The sector's industrial resilience rests heavily on Nuceria and Nuceria Prime—also called Nuwei One—whose relationship was described as comparable to Terra and Mars, but based on genuine cooperation rather than covert rivalry 468.

Nuceria and Ultramar later formed agreements for mutual defense and governance. Their combined scale and military capacity caused political concern within the Imperium, particularly because Nuceria was openly governed by transhumans over mortals 392 397 587 632.
