Background

Origins and Kelbo Hal's apprenticeship

Quadrant was born in a Martian smelting district and worked as a child laborer before becoming the apprentice of Forge Master Kelbo Hal. His early life on Mars remained a source of painful memories even after he returned as a prominent Mechanicus figure. 311 443 651

Kelbo extensively modified Quadrant, discarding much of his original body and replacing it with mass-produced Warden-grade cybernetics. Quadrant later described his true body as only a brain and a small amount of remaining organic tissue, kept in a secure chamber while he operated remote bodies. 444 445

Kelbo eventually banished him to the Twelfth Legion, where Quadrant was assigned the unglamorous duty of chronicler. Though he resented Kelbo for his treatment, he initially retained gratitude and attachment toward his former mentor. 310 315 405

Remembrancer of the Twelfth Legion

Quadrant arrived at Novosindak V as an Imperial War Council-appointed remembrancer. His original mission was to record the Twelfth Legion's combat operations, decisions, and voyage logs. 151

Angron accepted his presence after discovering that Quadrant could extend one of his optical lenses into a camera. Quadrant subsequently photographed Angron, the Legionaries, and the company captains, beginning his service alongside the World Eaters. 151

Break with Kelbo Hal

Quadrant's dependence on Kelbo weakened after Qin Xia defended him during Kelbo's interrogation and revealed that Kelbo's apparent favors toward him were often calculated political maneuvers. Quadrant thanked Qin Xia for being the first person to speak on his behalf when facing someone he feared. 311 315

When Kelbo threatened Zes, Quadrant openly rejected his mentor's utilitarian worldview, insisting that Zes should live because she had cared for him—not because she possessed strategic value. 405

During Kelbo's Chaos-fueled rebellion, Quadrant used a synthetic body immune to the corruption affecting electronic devices. He pursued Kelbo's fleeing vessel, employed dimensional traversal technology to bypass his defenses, and ultimately survived the final confrontation that killed his mentor. 657 658

Two solar months later, Quadrant was inaugurated as Forge Master of Mars. Both the Imperial and Martian factions initially sought to use him as a rubber stamp, but he recognized that Mars's political divisions, his technological expertise, and the ideological support created by his pilgrimage could become sources of independent power. 660 664
