History

During the Third Shinobi World War, Minato served as Konoha's foremost rapid-response shinobi. His Flying Thunder God Technique allowed him to intervene across battlefields; after arriving at a disastrous Iwagakure engagement, he killed fifty Rock ninja—including jonin Higashishinin—in a single operation. Iwagakure subsequently authorized its forces to abandon missions rather than face the “Yellow Flash.” 13

After reinforcing the besieged Konoha forces at Kikyo Pass, Minato received independent command of the army from Hiruzen Sarutobi. Though initially nervous, he personally learned his subordinates' names and assigned their duties. His command concluded with Sunagakure's unconditional surrender, delivered publicly by Kazekage Rasa. 16 17

Minato became central to Konoha's succession struggle between Hiruzen's favored candidate and Orochimaru. While he initially wished to avoid competing with Orochimaru, future visitors Naruto and Yamato told him that he would become the Fourth Hokage in another timeline and die during the Nine-Tails Incident. Orochimaru ultimately became Fourth Hokage while Minato and his supporters were absent from Konoha. His desire to protect Konoha often outweighs his personal ambitions. Before learning the future's warning, he considered yielding the Hokage contest to Orochimaru if doing so could prevent the village from splitting. Kannabi Bridge Incident

Before the Kannabi Bridge mission, Minato discovers that Orochimaru poisoned protein powder intended for him. Rather than retaliate, he has Obito return it and sends a message of reconciliation to Zhengyi. Obito instead redirects the poisoned supplies through bananas, causing Minato to collapse after losing access to his chakra. 25

Orochimaru then delivers the unconscious Minato to Iwagakure, where Minato is suspended over a cliff beside Orochimaru. The enemy demands that Hiruzen choose which captive will live. Hiruzen chooses Minato, but Obito and Kakashi intervene before Orochimaru's apparent death becomes permanent. 28 29

Knowledge of the Future

While protecting the Queen of Roran, Minato meets future versions of Naruto and Yamato. They reveal that Orochimaru will later attack Konoha and that Minato is destined to become Fourth Hokage before sacrificing himself during the Nine-Tails Incident.
