Background
Kiyonari was born into the Hyuga Clan's Branch Family and bears the Caged Bird curse mark. His parents died while he was young, leaving him in a single-room apartment supported by a small village pension and the clan's orphan allowance. At age three, he was already hunting in the Forest of Death to supplement his food supply. 1 13
While hunting, he was nearly trampled by a giant wild boar before Itachi and Sasuke Uchiha intervened. Kiyonari had secretly shot the boar in the eye during the encounter, earning Itachi's respect and beginning his connection with the brothers. 13 14
He persuaded Tsunade to remain in Konoha by arguing that shinobi should be people with choices rather than tools born to perpetuate hatred. Moved by his view of the First Hokage's legacy and the value of individual lives, Tsunade accepted him as her disciple. 19
Appearance
Konan's first impression was that Kiyonari looked more like a nobleman's son or a scholar than a ninja. 101
- Possesses the Hyuga Clan's pale white Byakugan. 105
- Keeps a cloth band tied across his forehead, concealing the Caged Bird mark early in the story. 1
- When using the giant Tenseigan's power, his eyes become golden; he manifests a blue-green chakra cloak and nine black chakra orbs. 136
Personality
Kiyonari is exceptionally pragmatic and survival-minded. He trained with a bow because he considered ranged attacks safer than close-quarters Gentle Fist combat, and he pursued medical ninjutsu partly because it offered a comparatively safe role during war. 29 78
Despite others treating him as unusually wise or virtuous, Kiyonari considers himself an ordinary person who simply acts when he has the means to do so. He openly admits to selfish motives and rejects being labeled a “good person.” 35
He is capable of calculated deception. During his mission to Iwagakure, he deliberately acted lecherous, loud, and foolish so others would see him as harmless and easy to manipulate. 105 He is also notably lazy about routine training and waking early, often relying on Hinata and Neji to get him moving. 71 98
Abilities & Skills
Byakugan
Kiyonari possesses the Hyuga Clan's dōjutsu, using it for surveillance, threat detection, and precise chakra-based combat.
- Intimidated a shopkeeper by activating his Byakugan and invoking his Hyuga status. 4
- Detected an underground approach while monitoring the area around Konan and Jiraiya. 119
- Located Hamura Shrine on the moon by identifying a spherical blind spot in his vision. 136
- Had his Caged Bird curse mark erased through Correction Points. 144
Gentle Fist & Chakra Control
Kiyonari practices the Hyuga Clan's Gentle Fist, though Neji initially outclassed him in close combat and taught him the importance of adaptability. 40 41
- Can force chakra flow through partially sealed acupoints through sheer willpower. 73
- Applies Gentle Fist principles beyond normal palm strikes, including injecting chakra through his fingers to damage internal organs. 101
- Developed sufficiently precise chakra control to shape Wind Release around his fingers without injuring himself. 101
Wind Release & Archery
Kiyonari's chakra nature is Wind Release. Before refining chakra, he practiced archery extensively for hunting and battlefield survival. 29
- Defeated Sasuke in an archery contest; Itachi judged his accuracy worthy of comparison to Anbu-level marksmanship. 29 30
- Channels Wind Release chakra onto arrowheads for lethal long-range attacks. 101
- Uses a finger-based variation of Wind Release: Vacuum Blade in close combat. 101
Medical Ninjutsu
As Tsunade's disciple, Kiyonari trains in medical ninjutsu and applies his knowledge both in the field and in treatment settings.
- Summoned Katsuyu to diagnose Yakumo Kurama's condition after ordinary hospital examinations failed. 64
- Mastered the Mystical Palm Technique by the time Tsunade brought him to the border. 81
- Identified Kakashi's blunt-trauma injuries and Guy's Lightning Release burns, then determined their treatment plans. 83
- Retrieved and surgically reattached Hanabi Hyuga's eyes. 139
Katsuyu Summoning & Sage Potential
Kiyonari signed the Shikkotsu Forest summoning contract and can summon Sage Katsuyu for protection and medical support. 38 64
- Katsuyu identified Kiyonari as having excellent aptitude for Sage Mode. 70
- He has been warned not to attempt Sage Mode training alone because natural energy is dangerous and potentially fatal. 70
Correction Points & Scripted Constructs
Kiyonari possesses and spends Correction Points to produce outcomes beyond ordinary ninjutsu.
- Used Correction Points to erase his Caged Bird curse mark. 144
- Opened a pocket dimension and sealed the giant Tenseigan inside it, cutting off Toneri's access to its power source. 136
- Used Correction Points to establish contact with the Pure Land, summon historical figures through Impure World Reincarnation, and place them within a constructed genjutsu scenario. 111
- Personally directs important figures within his large-scale scripted scenarios while maintaining predefined character profiles. 111
Tenseigan
On the moon, Kiyonari activated the giant Tenseigan housed in Hamura Shrine. The power temporarily evolved his eyes, enabled flight, heightened his perception of space and gravity, and granted access to techniques Toneri could use. 136 137
- Countered Toneri's Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosion with the same technique. 137
- Opened a space-time passage to return the group from the moon. 137
- Defeated Toneri and removed his Tenseigan eyes. 137
- The initial manifestation faded after the battle; Kiyonari later told Tsunade that he had taken the giant Tenseigan itself. 137 150
