History

Conflict with Konoha

Before the renewed war, Kirigakure had been forced to yield to Konoha through Namikaze Minato's strength. In the Land of Waves, Minato defeated the Fourth Mizukage and the Three-Tails' jinchūriki, while also preventing Kirigakure from sealing the rampaging Three-Tails into Nohara Rin and using her to destroy Konoha. 4

Following Minato's death during the Nine-Tails attack, Konoha's deterrent power weakened. Kirigakure prepared to exploit the opportunity alongside Kumogakure. 4

Kirigakure formally resumed hostilities by seizing the Land of Waves under Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura, then launching a large-scale landing operation into the Land of Fire. 28

Eastern Front Defeat

Kirigakure committed approximately eleven thousand ninja to invade the Land of Fire, but its force was undermined by the restored Blood Mist policy, factional infighting, and disorganized command. 105

Orochimaru lured pursuing Kirigakure forces into Emerald Spirit Forest, where Yamanaka Chujiu's prepared saturation ambush devastated them. The surviving forces fell into panic, with some killing one another amid traps, poison, genjutsu, and elemental bombardment. 106 107

Yagura, secretly controlled by Obito Uchiha, ignored warnings to retreat and instead escalated the conflict. His decision sent the Seven Ninja Swordsmen into the Land of Fire to assassinate Orochimaru. 106 108

Fall of Kirigakure

The Seven Ninja Swordsmen failed to reverse the war. Jūzō Biwa and Raiga Kurosuki were defeated by Orochimaru, while Jinin Akebino and Suikazan Fuguki were overcome by Might Duy and Yamanaka Chujiu respectively. 116

Yamanaka Chujiu subsequently led eight hundred Konoha ninja into the Land of Water disguised as maritime merchants. Using captured Kirigakure ninja as living puppets for reconnaissance and infiltration, his force reached the main island undetected. 120

Konoha's assault exploited Kirigakure's depleted defenses. Zabuza Momochi was defeated in the opening strike, while Mei Terumi and the defenders of the Mizukage Building were gradually overwhelmed. 121 122

Kirigakure was occupied, its army was annihilated, and Yagura fled with Obito to the Land of Rain. Although no surrender treaty was signed, the war ended with Kirigakure's defeat. 124

Leadership and Reconstruction

• Karatachi Yagura — Fourth Mizukage during the war. Obito Uchiha controlled him through Sharingan genjutsu, causing him to reject strategic withdrawals and pursue ruinous counterattacks. 106 108 124
• Genji — Elder responsible for Kirigakure's official affairs and wartime defenses. Yamanaka Chujiu later transformed him into a living puppet and used him to influence the village's political direction. 120 124 156
• Mei Terumi — Became the Fifth Mizukage after the conquest. She sought to free Kirigakure from Konoha's control, unaware that Konoha filtered the intelligence informing her decisions. 156

Three years after its fall, Kirigakure had rebuilt at a site more than one hundred kilometers from the original village. The Blood Mist policy had been abolished, internal factions were eliminated, and its ninja population recovered to ten thousand. 156

Konoha Control and Economic Integration

• Konoha used the living puppet Genji to support Mei Terumi's rise and direct Kirigakure's reconstruction from behind the scenes. 156
• The Rising Sun Organization entered the Land of Water, established branches across its islands, and opened trade routes with the Land of Fire. 156
