Background / History
Veteran Commander and Hokage Candidate
Orochimaru trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi and fought through two Great Ninja Wars. He commanded Konoha forces against the other four Great Ninja Villages and faced opponents including the Kazekage, Tsuchikage, Raikage, Mizukage, and Hanzō. Eighty percent of Konoha’s jōnin had served under him, leaving former subordinates throughout the village’s departments 10.
He competed with Namikaze Minato for the Fourth Hokage’s position but was passed over. After Minato died in the Nine-Tails attack, Orochimaru became the leading prospective Fifth Hokage. Meanwhile, he continued secret laboratory work and received corpses from Yamanaka Chujiu, whom he also paid for political intelligence 1 97.
Orochimaru offered Chujiu an apprenticeship and the possibility of learning immortality. Chujiu initially refused because he feared Orochimaru would become a missing-nin. By their later military collaboration, however, Chujiu was formally recognized alongside Nawaki and Anko Mitarashi as one of Orochimaru’s three official students 2 40.
Kumogakure Campaign
Orochimaru assigned Chujiu to delay the Fourth Raikage, promising timely support and protection for the Rising Sun Organization’s children. Chujiu wore Orochimaru’s Great Snake Skin and commanded the Northern Front under his identity. Orochimaru remained in Konoha to finish critical experiments, remove incriminating materials, and prepare to expose Root’s Wood Release experiments using a plan suggested by Chujiu 40 41.
He reached Sakura Fortress one day before their agreed deadline, abandoning unfinished experiments to support his student. Together they revised the counterattack, using Orochimaru’s Communication Snakes to make a thirty-person raid on Kumogakure’s supply hub feasible 47 48.
At Sakura Plains, Orochimaru endured six hours of fighting against the Fourth Raikage. When A and Killer B began killing ordinary Konoha shinobi, he retaliated by poisoning Kumogakure’s main force. He also maneuvered Killer B into surrendering a tentacle, securing a sample of the Eight-Tails’ flesh before withdrawing from the fortress’s destruction 61 62 63.
Orochimaru and Chujiu subsequently led Konoha forces into the Land of Lightning, captured Yugito Nii, occupied Kumogakure, and forced the Fourth Raikage to surrender. Orochimaru returned with enormous war reparations and a hero’s welcome, gaining public support from the Hyūga and Uchiha clans 88 95 97.
Eastern Front and Break with Hiruzen
Hiruzen offered rewards and a path to the Hokage’s office on the condition that Orochimaru arrange for a Sarutobi family member to succeed him. Orochimaru refused, arguing that the office belonged to Konoha rather than the Sarutobi clan. Hiruzen’s subsequent threat to expel him deepened their break 98 99.
Orochimaru accepted Chujiu’s proposal to defeat Kirigakure with eight hundred elite ninja. Thousands more young shinobi volunteered, and the pair reorganized their forces before marching east. Orochimaru restored frontline morale and drew Kirigakure troops into Chujiu’s ambush at Emerald Spirit Forest 100 104 105 106.
During the campaign, he killed Jūzō Biwa and Raiga Kurosuki and administered medicines that stabilized Might Duy after Duy opened the Gate of Death. Konoha’s eventual conquest of Kirigakure and occupation of the Land of Water further undermined Hiruzen’s authority 116 118 124 125.
Assassination Plot and Succession
Danzō proposed assassinating Orochimaru, and Hiruzen approved the operation. Chujiu warned Orochimaru in advance and used controlled Root ninja to manipulate the plot. Orochimaru deliberately entered the ambush, camped within sight of his enemies, and waited until Danzō’s impatience forced an attack 127 128 129 130.
Chujiu’s arrival and the Root ninja’s changed allegiance reversed the battle without a single death on Orochimaru’s side. After Tobirama Senju killed Danzō, Orochimaru returned toward Konoha with Tobirama, Chujiu, and their followers 131 135.
Following Hiruzen’s defeat, Orochimaru demanded a public surrender to limit Konoha’s losses. He condemned the rigid system Hiruzen had preserved, and Hiruzen formally entrusted him with the Hokage’s office. As Fifth Hokage, Orochimaru spared but confined his former teacher, purged the Sarutobi clan, and delegated most governance to Chujiu 150 152.
Research and the Anti-Snake Alliance
Under the new administration, Orochimaru allowed Chujiu to use any of his research results while he concentrated on physiology, chakra’s origins, immortality, and living puppets. His work supplied technologies that Chujiu applied to industrial development 154.
When Jiraiya and Tsunade joined the Anti-Snake Alliance, Orochimaru supported Chujiu’s plan to lure them to the Valley of the End. He established a genuine forbidden-jutsu laboratory there as bait and fought his fellow Sannin, exploiting Tsunade’s trauma through Impure World Reincarnation before battling Jiraiya’s Sage Mode 158 159 162.
Later, reports of captured jinchūriki prompted Chujiu to conclude that Uchiha Madara had returned. Orochimaru suspended his tailed-beast research, put on his combat equipment and Hokage’s haori, and joined Jiraiya and Tsunade to address the crisis 186 187.
Appearance
Orochimaru has fair skin, long black hair, and golden, vertically slit pupils. His presence is repeatedly described as sinister, and his movements can resemble those of a serpent 1 61 105 162.
- Long tongue: Habitually licks his cheek and sometimes his eye 1 40.
- White clothing: Wears a plain white robe during his victorious return to Konoha and a white laboratory coat while researching 97 186.
- Combat attire: Uses a shimenawa belt and wears the Hokage’s haori when returning to active duty 186.
- Modified physiology: Can elongate his neck and produce snake scales across his skin 62 162.
Personality
Orochimaru is cold, calculating, and willing to cross ethical boundaries for research. He observes mass poisoning like an interesting experiment and seeks tailed-beast tissue even during a major battle. His stated priority is scientific knowledge rather than combat itself 61 62.
Although Hiruzen interprets his rise as excessive political ambition, Orochimaru explicitly says he wants the resources and uninterrupted laboratory work that control of Konoha can provide. He readily supports Chujiu’s reforms and offers to leave village administration to him 126 129 152.
His attachment to Hiruzen survives their political disagreements long enough for the assassination plot to genuinely wound him. He also retains affection for Jiraiya and Tsunade despite fighting them; those ties influence the decision not to execute them afterward 129 174.
Orochimaru’s mentorship combines suspicion with real investment. He initially seeks to make Chujiu his student partly because he cannot eliminate the threat posed by Chujiu’s tracking ability. Their mutual wariness develops into trust, and his early arrival at Sakura Fortress earns Chujiu’s genuine respect 40 48.
He values demonstrated results over appearances or rank. He is astonished by the genin Might Duy’s mastery of the Eight Gates, recognizes the peaceful potential of Rising Sun’s agricultural work, and resolves to intensify his own research after witnessing Chujiu’s spiritual techniques overcome Pain 104 111 170.
Abilities & Skills
Survival, Substitution, and Concealment
Orochimaru’s life-saving techniques allow him to survive attacks that would ordinarily be fatal 61 116.
- Reappears through snakes after being bisected, torn apart, or burned into charcoal 61.
- Uses substitutions that disrupt even Byakugan tracking 40.
- Produces convincing decoys with independent adaptability and emotional responses 160.
- Limit: Chujiu can identify and track his true location despite substitutions, clones, and distances exceeding one thousand meters 40.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
Orochimaru summons serpents from Ryūchi Cave and uses them for attacks, obstruction, and defensive formations 40 62 131.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands / Hidden Shadow Multi Snake Hands: Releases venomous snakes from his sleeves; uses them to obstruct Killer B’s vision 62 116.
- Myriad Snake Array: Creates overwhelming swarms capable of exhausting Raiga’s lightning defenses and consuming him 116.
- Giant snakes: Crush enemies and form living defensive walls around allied shinobi 106 131.
- Manda: Uses the enormous summon against the Fourth Raikage and Killer B 62.
- Limit: Kisame’s flooding sweeps away smaller snakes and deprives giant snakes of the footing needed to maintain a defensive line 131.
Poison and Battlefield Control
Orochimaru breeds snakes specifically to reproduce the battlefield effects of Hanzō’s poisonous mist 61.
- Snakes bite, spit venom, and spray poisonous blood when killed 61.
- Their deaths create toxic zones that remain difficult to disperse even with Wind Release 61.
- Giant summoned snakes also release lethal mist 106.
- Uses Forbidden Technique: Serpent Prison Myriad Poisons against Jiraiya’s Toad Oil Flame Bullet 162.
Modified Body and Eight-Branched Serpent Techniques
Decades of forbidden-technique modifications give Orochimaru a body whose toughness rivals a giant summoned beast 162.
- Elongates his neck to coil around Killer B’s leg 62.
- Manifests eight enormous venomous snakes during the Sakura Plains battle 63.
- Eight-Branched Serpent: Ultimate Barrier: Condenses scales into defensive armor that withstands Jiraiya’s giant senjutsu Rasengan 162.
- Limits: Admits that Tsunade surpasses him in taijutsu; judges that even his Eight-Headed Serpent form could not withstand Might Duy’s Daytime Tiger 118 162.
Swordsmanship and Sensory Abilities
Orochimaru combines rapid sword attacks with snake-like movement and specialized vision 115 116 134.
- Tracks Jūzō through dense mist despite repeated changes of position 115.
- Breaks the Kubikiribōchō with the Kusanagi Sword and extends his blade dozens of meters to kill the fleeing Jūzō 116.
- Possesses infrared vision alongside his snake eyes 134.
- Limit: Cannot visually follow Tobirama’s Body Flicker, relying instead on chakra fluctuations; considers obtaining a Sharingan to improve dynamic visual acuity 134.
Research, Medicine, and Sealing
Orochimaru’s research encompasses human experimentation, bloodline fusion, chakra, immortality, and tailed beasts 41 154 186.
- Collaborates with Root on Wood Release bloodline-fusion experiments 41.
- Seals away a severed Eight-Tails tentacle for study 62 63.
- Stabilizes Might Duy’s fading life force with repeated medicinal injections after the Gate of Death 118.
- Extracts tailed beasts from Yugito and Fū without immediately killing them 186.
- Limit: Those former hosts must remain near their extracted beasts; completely severing the connection remains an unfinished research objective 186.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru uses Impure World Reincarnation as psychological warfare against Tsunade 162.
- Summons her deceased loved ones, exploiting her trauma and temporarily incapacitating her 162.
Command and Political Strategy
His battlefield reputation rests on years of successful command, giving him influence among veterans, civilian shinobi, and major clans 10 67 145.
- Collaborates with Chujiu on supply raids, ambushes, and military reorganization 48 105 106.
- Uses military victories and public admiration to resist Hiruzen’s political suppression 97.
- Recognizes an anticipated assassination attempt as an opportunity to draw out his enemies 130.
- Attribution: The Northern Front’s initial retreat and precision-command successes are Chujiu’s actions while disguised as Orochimaru, not Orochimaru personally commanding 41 42 47.
