History

Eastern Front war

After the Fourth Hokage's death, the Fourth Mizukage led Kirigakure Ninja in capturing the Land of Waves. They then landed in the Land of Fire and pushed the Eastern Front inland 28. Kirigakure deployed 11,000 ninja, but its army lacked unified coordination. The reinstated “Blood Mist Village” policy also fueled internal conflict: some sought resources or fame, others plotted against the Mizukage, and many fought chiefly to survive 105.

Orochimaru drew pursuing Kirigakure forces into Emerald Spirit Forest, where Yamanaka Chujiu's prepared ninjutsu barrage struck nearly half of them and shattered their formation 106. The surviving forces withdrew from the mainland. The Mizukage ordered the Seven Ninja Swordsmen to assassinate Orochimaru while Kirigakure prepared a counterattack in the Land of Waves 108.

Defeat and reconstruction

Konoha attacked on two fronts: Orochimaru fought the Mizukage's remaining army in the Land of Waves, while Chujiu brought 800 ninja by sea toward Kirigakure itself. Kirigakure's depleted home defenses could not prevent the village's capture 120 124. In the Land of Waves, the last 4,000 defenders fought until roughly 1,000 remained. After hearing that their village had fallen, the survivors slashed their forehead protectors, renounced Kirigakure, and fled as rogue ninja 124.

Over the following three years, Kirigakure relocated and rebuilt. It abolished the Blood Mist policy, restored its departments, and recovered to 10,000 ninja. Mei Terumi became Fifth Mizukage, while Zabuza Momochi was appointed to rebuild the Ninja Academy 156. The village later joined Konoha's economic system, although Mei did not know how extensively Chujiu controlled Kirigakure through its economy and the living puppet Genji 156 178.

Water Release

• Kirigakure Ninja made use of Water Release; the rivers, lakes, and coastline of the eastern Land of Fire favored their techniques 105 106.
• A Kirigakure Water Release squad later fought under Chujiu's command alongside Konoha forces 163.

Mist and silent killing

• Kirigakure Ninja were accustomed to the thick mist surrounding their village and trained their hearing to detect faint sounds within it 115.
• Their Silent Killing Technique exploited that familiar environment against opponents who could not see clearly in the mist 115.

Notable Members

• Karatachi Yagura — Fourth Mizukage and commander during the Eastern Front war; Obito Uchiha controlled him through genjutsu 105 108.
