Background and History
The Seven Ninja Swords and their wielders were symbols of Kirigakure. The unit’s history included a devastating encounter with Konoha ninja Might Duy: seven swordsmen fought him, but only three escaped 202 549.
The group later fractured amid Kirigakure’s turmoil. Zabuza’s rebellion against the Fourth Mizukage failed, and he became a wanted rogue ninja. Other sword wielders were rumored to have vanished or defected, leaving Kirigakure with an uncertain hold on most of its blades 126. During the border war with Konoha, Hozuki Mangetsu and Ringo Ameyuri were sent to kill Arata Uchiha. Mangetsu carried a scroll capable of summoning the seven swords, though three were already held by other wielders 197 202.
After defeating Mangetsu, Arata returned Hiramekarei and the sword scroll to him and proposed forming his own Seven Ninja Swordsmen rather than restoring Kirigakure’s unit. He invited Mangetsu to compete for its captaincy, insisting that leadership be decided by strength 202. Mangetsu subsequently delivered Nuibari to Haku, and the emerging group undertook its first assignment against the Gato Group 225. Arata’s force later included former Mist ninja who had refused Kirigakure’s recall 272.

Combat Methods
Swordsmanship and specialized weapons
- The swords give their wielders distinct roles: Haku uses Nuibari’s blade and wire for precise attacks and traps, while Mangetsu uses Hiramekarei for large chakra-blade strikes 292 331.
- Mangetsu combines swordsmanship with the Hozuki Clan’s Hydrification Technique, which allows physical strikes to pass through his water-like body. Lightning Release remains a dangerous counter 198 549.
- Raiga’s lightning blades complement Ranmaru’s perception, making them an effective fighting pair 183 378.
Mist and assassination
- The group uses the Hidden Mist Technique to conceal its movements. Zabuza is known for Silent Killing, and Mangetsu invokes the swordsmen’s assassination methods while hunting infiltrators 380 406.
- In a sealed capital, five swordsmen surrounded the last surviving Root unit. The defenders’ barrier and Ranmaru’s detection helped prevent the infiltrators from escaping 382 402.
Story Role
- Defense against Akatsuki: The swordsmen joined Arata’s prepared counterattack on the Six Paths of Pain. Zabuza defeated the Human Path; Raiga and Ranmaru defeated the Animal Path; Mangetsu identified the Deva Path’s five-second interval between attraction and repulsion techniques 289 292.
- Defense of the Land of Hot Water: Five swordsmen helped stop an infiltration of the capital. Their training and loyalty proved decisive where the less experienced Thunderlight Group alone might not have held the city 382 398.
- Assault on Konoha: Chino assigned the swordsmen as the invasion’s spearhead. Mangetsu recruited Fujin and Raijin to wield Kabutowari and Shibuki, while other members fought Konoha’s defenders at the Chūnin Exams 532 537 538 549.
- Break with Kirigakure: After the assault, Kirigakure demanded the return of its former shinobi and swords. Arata refused to surrender the blades, and Zabuza stated that the former Mist ninja had found a new purpose 580 581.
- Itsukushima: The fully assembled group, by then numbering more than seven, fought alongside Yogakure’s other forces for seven days. Mangetsu used Hiramekarei to close a gap in their defenses as the initially competitive fighters learned to support one another 720.
