Background / History
Konoha service and departure
According to Hiruzen’s recollection, Orochimaru grew up in Konoha as the child of ordinary village ninja who died in war. He became Hiruzen’s student and one of the Legendary Sannin. During the Second Shinobi World War, an Uchiha squad leader named Uchiha A saved his life; during the Third, Orochimaru led Uchiha ninja in Konoha’s defense 6 27.
Naro identifies Nawaki’s death as the turning point in Orochimaru’s pursuit of immortality. Previously regarded as a prospective Fourth Hokage, Orochimaru began fearing death and questioning life’s meaning after losing his first disciple. Naro also states that Hiruzen initially helped his forbidden research, then exposed it after the Fourth Hokage’s death and allowed him to escape 13.
Orochimaru subsequently joined Akatsuki, where the Rinnegan, Sharingan, and forbidden techniques interested him. Hiruzen’s knowledge of his membership becomes one reason for sending Itachi to infiltrate the organization 4 18.
Paying respects to the Uchiha
After the massacre, Orochimaru returns to Uchiha Lake and meets Tsunade and Jiraiya. He rejects Jiraiya’s defense of Hiruzen, congratulates Tsunade on abandoning her self-destructive lifestyle, and openly condemns Konoha’s leadership 6.
At the memorial, he picks up a shattered Uchiha forehead protector and bows three times, longer than either teammate. Remembering Uchiha A’s sacrifice, he questions how such a loyal ninja would regard the slaughter and slander of his descendants. He then leaves Konoha rather than attempting reconciliation 6.
Naro’s inheritance and the break with Akatsuki
An intelligence scroll revealing the Sage of Six Paths’ lineage prompts Orochimaru to investigate the relationship between Sharingan, Hashirama cells, and the Rinnegan. He reasons that stronger ocular power may be necessary to balance Hashirama’s life force and considers Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan a suitable research target 9.
Naro later invites him to the ruined Land of Whirlpools with a promise of immortality. Orochimaru initially questions Naro’s intentions, but Shisui’s revealed spirit form and the explanation of national fortune capture his interest. Naro’s claim that the Pure Land has a controlling master further strengthens his determination to escape death 12 13 14 15.
After accepting the inheritance, Orochimaru retrieves experimental equipment and data from Akatsuki’s base and leaves without announcing a return. Nagato declines to pursue him, recognizing that he has obtained a new route toward immortality and no longer needs the organization 18.
Sage training and a legitimate identity
While studying in seclusion, Orochimaru concludes that his fugitive reputation obstructs national-fortune cultivation: people who fear and reject him cannot provide the recognition he needs. He plans around three requirements—a legitimate identity, dependable strength, and an organization capable of gathering fortune 19 25.
He then claims the White Snake Sage’s promised opportunity to learn Sage Mode. Fortune-enhanced perception allows him to correct an energy imbalance before petrification becomes permanent. After succeeding, he asks where Ryūchi Cave’s “Dragon” is, provoking the sage’s furious threat 25.
Orochimaru subsequently reappears publicly as the supposedly long-lost son of the Land of Sound’s Daimyō, Fujiwara No. The Land of Fire’s Daimyō cancels his warrant, and Orochimaru renounces his ninja identity. Fujiwara No acknowledges him as heir and plans to abdicate in his favor; Hiruzen, however, considers the claimed biological relationship fabricated 26 27.
To rehabilitate his reputation, Orochimaru publishes Konoha mission reports documenting senior officials’ authorization and material support for his human experiments. His former underground base is renovated into a research institute, giving him a practical demonstration of the protection and resources national authority can provide 26.
Appearance
Orochimaru has pale skin, long black hair falling over his shoulders, and golden slit pupils. At Uchiha Lake, he wears a gray kimono 6.
- Sage Mode aura: His body radiates cyan-white light 25.
- Sage Mode eyes: His golden pupils become deeper, brighter, and sharper, with snake-like eyeshadow 25.
- Sage Mode markings: Faint snake-scale patterns appear on his skin and disappear when the transformation subsides 25.
Personality
Orochimaru is candid about his wrongdoing. He admits to human experimentation and forbidden research rather than presenting himself as morally innocent, contrasting that honesty with Konoha officials who justify their actions as benevolent. His condemnation of the massacre coexists with sincere gratitude toward the Uchiha who protected him 6.
He approaches research through exhaustive study, note-taking, and verification. Rather than choosing what he likes best, he compares options and selects what is most effective. Even during the threat of petrification, he remains calm enough to diagnose and correct the problem 19 25.
His overriding ambition is immortality, not the Hokage’s office. Access to a more promising cultivation method outweighs his interest in Akatsuki’s peace project, and he accepts noble status despite having previously despised the aristocracy 18 27.
Abilities & Skills
Method of National Fortune
Orochimaru cultivates collective fortune through the inheritance supplied by Naro 15 19.
- Perceives a Fortune Cloud Canopy and the connections supplying it, including a particularly strong link to Ryūchi Cave 19.
- Actively absorbs fortune rather than relying solely on passive blessings 19.
- Gains sharper cognition, reactions, inspiration, and understanding of difficult techniques even at entry level 25.
- Requires favorable recognition from others, making his former missing-nin reputation a cultivation disadvantage 25.
- Cannot faithfully transcribe the inherited method: what he writes becomes unrelated to the knowledge he intends to record 19.
- Receives immortality as a promised potential of advanced cultivation, not a demonstrated achievement in these chapters 15 18 25.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode
The White Snake Sage teaches him to combine natural energy with chakra to produce Sage Chakra 25.
- Significantly enhances strength, speed, perception, and recovery 25.
- Enables instant casting of ninjutsu that previously required hand seals 25.
- Requires his personal 4:6 natural-energy-to-chakra balance; excess natural energy begins turning his body to stone 25.
- Builds on earlier senjutsu research, of which the Earth Curse Mark is one result 25.
- Receives permission to seek Ichikishimahime for further senjutsu instruction; subsequent training is not shown 25.
Forbidden Techniques and Biological Research
Orochimaru studies death, human bodies, ocular powers, and inherited abilities through experiments 9 14 19.
- Successfully experiments with Impure World Reincarnation, summoning deceased souls into living bodies 14.
- Creates Danzō’s arm containing Hashirama cells and multiple Sharingan 9.
- Uses the arm’s balance between life force and ocular power to formulate a hypothesis about Rinnegan development 9.
- Recognizes the risks of his existing research: excessive forbidden-technique use damages the body, while Sharingan–Hashirama-cell fusion carries unpredictable side effects 25.
Sealing Arts
He researches the Uzumaki sealing legacy alongside Sharingan and Hashirama cells. Hiruzen places his sealing mastery among the world’s top three 27.
- His expertise makes him a suspect when jinchūriki disappear from Kumogakure and Iwagakure 21 27.
- The suspicion does not establish his responsibility; the provided chapters identify Naro as the one who extracted their Tailed Beasts 28.
Snake Summoning and Intelligence
Orochimaru maintains summoning relationships with Ryūchi Cave’s serpents 25.
- Regards the Great Snake as a reliable partner, although each summoning requires remuneration 25.
- Uses other snake partners to reverse-summon himself into Ryūchi Cave 25.
- Receives intelligence delivered by a snake after leaving Akatsuki 18.
