Background / History

Before Ji Siyuan descended to Douluo Continent, Tang San acted as his godfather and prepared him for the loss of the God Realm. Unable to leave Ji Siyuan the Asura God position, he instead entrusted him with the Sea God god position, the Golden Trident, and a wisp of divine soul to guide him in the lower realm. 1

Tang San accompanies Ji Siyuan after the latter is cast through a spatial tunnel onto the Douluo Continent. Though only a wisp of remnant soul, he encourages the grieving Ji Siyuan to grow strong enough to become a god and reunite with his parents. 2

The historical account of this world immediately unsettles him. Tang San insists that, in his own history, he killed Bibi Dong but reformed the Martial Soul Hall rather than destroying it; he concludes that they have arrived in another timeline. 2 He is equally dismayed to find the Tang Sect reduced to three members and bound by a rule restricting future sect masters to Blue Silver Grass users. 2 3

He guides Ji Siyuan into the Tang Sect, teaches him its secret arts, and urges Tang Ya and Bei Bei to abandon the sect’s self-defeating traditions. 2 3 4 Tang San also recognizes the danger of exposing Ji Siyuan’s Sword of Three Realms Judgment, advising him to conceal it despite its god-level origin. 3

After Ji Siyuan is gravely injured in Radiant City, Tang San uses Life divine power to preserve his life and directs the group toward the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in search of a Lovesick Heartbreak Red. 249 251 252 He later helps heal Wang Dong’er’s incomplete soul, leading to her acceptance of him as her father. 217

Tang San eventually explains that he and Ji Siyuan came from a different God Realm: Tang San is the Asura God, while Ji Siyuan is the child of the God Kings of Goodness and Evil. 249

While his divided soul remains with Ji Siyuan, Tang San’s true body participates in the affairs of his original God Realm. His conflict with the God of Destruction over control of the God Realm Core prevents the realm from responding properly to an approaching spacetime turbulence, causing it to be swept away from its original location. 317 After the God Realm returns, Tang San and Destruction resume their political confrontation. 318

Appearance

Tang San normally exists as an incorporeal remnant soul in Ji Siyuan’s Sea of Consciousness. When he manifests directly, his appearance is identical to the statue of Tang San standing outside Shrek Academy. 249

Tang San is patient and protective toward Ji Siyuan, consistently offering practical guidance on survival, cultivation, martial souls, and the unfamiliar rules of the new timeline. 2 3 He is highly strategic, favoring concealment, preparation, and calculated intervention when Ji Siyuan faces stronger enemies. 3 68 158

He is also blunt, irritable, and deeply critical of institutions or traditions he considers harmful. The altered history of the Martial Soul Hall, the Tang Sect’s restrictive succession rule, Shrek Academy’s recommendation requirement, and Yu Xiaogang’s theories all draw his open contempt. 2 3 7

Tang San’s emotional restraint weakens where family is concerned. He is distraught by the suffering endured by Wang Dong’er and Di Qiu’er under the actions of their counterpart’s father, whom he contemptuously calls the “Tang Beast.” 217 249 He is similarly delighted by Tang Wutong’s arrival, whom he recognizes as his youngest daughter, but agrees to conceal his presence until she is emotionally prepared to learn the truth. 323 326

As a mentor, Tang San can be demanding but recognizes that divine inheritance must be earned independently. He guides Wang Dong’er through her Sea God trials but refuses to assist her in pulling out the Sea God Trident, believing outside intervention would undermine her future potential as a god. 303

The conduct of his true body in the God Realm also reveals a politically ambitious and competitive side. His rivalry with Destruction over leadership and the God Realm Core contributes to the God Realm’s displacement during the spacetime crisis. 317
