Appearance

Soul Rings manifest as colored bands around a Soul Master’s body. Their color generally indicates their age and quality, although disguises, mutations, divine power, and Soul Spirit contracts can alter or conceal that appearance. 49 130 193

• White — the lowest recognized grade; Huo Yuhao uses white rings as a disguise through Simulation. 49 193
• Yellow — a standard low-level Soul Ring color. 129

Orange and orange-gold are not interchangeable in every case. Xiaobai’s three-hundred-thousand-year Soul Spirit initially produces an orange ring without the Snow Empress ring’s golden radiance, while the Evil Emperor’s seven-hundred-and-ninety-thousand-year ring is orange-gold. The exact general threshold for these colors is not established. 254 274 343

Mechanics

Acquisition and absorption

A Soul Master ordinarily gains a new Soul Ring after every ten levels of Soul Power. Soul Rings are commonly obtained by killing a suitable Soul Beast and absorbing the ring it leaves behind. 28 107

• The Soul Master must generally deliver the killing blow before absorption, as Ji Siyuan does against the Earth King. 28
• Soul Beast age strongly affects a ring’s power and the difficulty of absorption. 28 85
• High-level Soul Beasts may leave behind a remnant soul that attacks within the absorber’s Sea of Consciousness. 206
• Physical strength, spiritual power, martial soul quality, external treasures, and divine power can raise a Soul Master’s effective absorption limit. 28 85 210
• The widely circulated first-ring limit of 432 years is explicitly challenged in Ji Siyuan’s case; he successfully absorbs a thousand-year first ring. 6

Soul Beast sacrifice is another means of obtaining a Soul Ring. Tang San distinguishes sacrifice from ordinary absorption when comparing the safety of hundred-thousand-year rings with the later Soul Spirit Method. 5 28 263

Not every martial soul requires Soul Rings. Ji Siyuan’s Sword of Three Realms Judgment and the Life-and-Destruction power transformed into its scabbard do not require them; neither can receive the planetary fate gift that becomes his fourth ring. 107 260

Soul Skills

Each Soul Ring can grant Soul Skills, with higher-quality or exceptional rings capable of granting more than one. 107 210

• Ji Siyuan’s fifth hundred-thousand-year ring grants Desolation Ash Lotus Life and Death and Heavenly Anomaly Heart-Burning Absolution. 210
• Huo Yutong’s fifth ring from the Soul Spirit Liya grants Mermaid Duet, which enhances spiritual Soul Skills, and Lament Echo, which converts single-target effects into group control. 193
• Huo Yutong’s sixth Spirit Eye ring grants Dirge-Soulshaking Cry, which can temporarily seal Soul Rings below hundred-thousand-year grade, and Mourning Heart Resonance: Life Beyond Dreams, an illusion-like mental skill. 259
• Ji Siyuan’s second ring grants Blazing Fire Lotus, an attack that erupts from beneath a target and has a knock-up effect. 29
• Wang Dong’er’s hundred-thousand-year ring grants Butterfly God Dance and Radiant Holy Butterfly Flash. The latter increases her power according to how many Soul Skills she has used before it. 264
• The Soul Rings originally supplied by the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass give Huo Yutong numerous ice-attribute abilities, including Ice Emperor’s Proud Chill, Frost Condensation Soul-Severing, Ice Emperor Forged Body, Ice Blossom Abyssal Mist, and Winter Snow Domain. 259

Soul Skills are affected by the receiving martial soul, not merely the source Soul Beast. After Qiu’er’s martial soul assimilates the immortal herb’s rings, their skills become predominantly enhancement-type abilities suited to her close-combat strength. 264

Ring-granted skills are distinct from Soul Bone skills and self-created techniques. Dirge-Soulshaking Cry cannot seal Soul Bone skills, and Soul Masters can modify how they release existing skills to develop additional combat techniques without acquiring another ring. 102 259

Ring evolution and concealment

Soul Rings are not always permanently fixed at their original apparent age or color.

• Ji Siyuan’s divine power causes his first ring to reach five thousand years and his second ring to become black. 184
• Huo Yutong uses Simulation to conceal the true colors of her Soul Rings, making them appear white. 193
• Wang Dong’er’s first ring changes from yellow to purple after her Sea God trial rewards, though she publicly attributes the change to the Clear Sky Secret Method. 232
• Ji Siyuan’s fourth ring is visibly illusory while he remains below Level 40, because it was forcibly fixed rather than absorbed through the normal process. 107 112
• After Ji Siyuan reaches Level 41, his Fate Soul Ring becomes fully solid. 152
• Wang Dong’er’s second Sea God trial raises every ring’s age by five thousand years, bringing her third ring to ten-thousand-year grade. By her confrontation with Xuan Zi, her configuration is five black and three red rings. 263 288

Soul Spirit Method

The Soul Spirit Method allows a Soul Beast’s soul to become a Soul Spirit rather than being destroyed for a conventional ring. The Soul Spirit can then provide its contractor with Soul Rings. 184 186

• Ji Siyuan and Huo Yutong form a Soul Spirit Contract with Liya to save her from dissipation after the destruction of the Ten Thousand Souls Banner. 184
• Ten- and hundred-year Soul Spirits can provide two Soul Rings; thousand-year Soul Spirits can provide four or five; Soul Spirits of ten thousand years or above can provide nine. 186
• Liya, a hundred-thousand-year Soul Spirit, provides Huo Yutong’s fifth hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring. 193

Sealing and storage

Soul Ring power can be sealed to make an otherwise excessive cultivation base manageable. Huo Yutong uses a Seal Ring Technique when acquiring her third ring, while Tian Meng suppresses the seventy-thousand-year Silver Hero Beast’s ring to fifty-thousand-year strength for her fourth-ring absorption. Sealing part of a ring’s power also limits the immediate Soul Power increase gained from it. 85 159

Soul Tools can temporarily store an unabsorbed Soul Ring, but their capacity is limited. The storage Soul Tool Ji Siyuan obtains from Qian Duoduo cracks while holding the Fire Evil Tyrant’s ring, forcing him to absorb it before reaching the Body Sect or Shrek and before he can refine its Soul Bone. 206

Exceptional Soul Rings

Fate Soul Ring

Ji Siyuan’s fourth ring is a unique Fate Soul Ring created when the Three-Eyed Golden Lion gathers the Star Dou Great Forest’s flames of fate around him. It is described as a return gift from Star Dou and the plane for the fortune Ji Siyuan brings them. 106 107

• It forms at Level 34, defying the rule that a new ring is gained only every ten levels. 107
• It is fiery red rather than blood-red, with a faint gold radiance beneath its surface. 107 130
• It does not originate from a slain Soul Beast. 112
• It activates and strengthens the Eye of Destiny. 107
• Its known skills include Fate Flame Revelation, which lets Ji Siyuan see a being’s lifetime fortune, and Fate Flame Scheduling, which transfers or rearranges fate flames. 107 140
• During the Soul Fight Tournament, its color causes widespread false assumptions that Ji Siyuan possesses a hundred-thousand-year fourth ring. 129 130
• The ring initially requires continuous anchoring to prevent dissipation. Tang San, the Eye of Destiny, the Three-Eyed Golden Lion’s third eye, and Ji Siyuan’s Lotus Seeds help stabilize it; one Lotus Seed melts into the ring to fix its power. 107
• Fate Flame Scheduling can transfer fortune between beings or rearrange a being’s fortune between different times. Tian Meng and the Ice Empress initially become Wisdom Soul Rings, only later becoming Soul Spirits. Electrolux explicitly distinguishes their original method from his Soul Spirit Method, rejecting the Ice Empress’s ring color as evidence for the age threshold of orange-gold Soul Spirit rings. 254 255

Their Spiritual Origins continue nourishing their original rings. Consequently, Huo Yutong’s later rings are supplied by other Soul Spirits: Liya supplies Spirit Eye rings, while the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass initially supplies additional Ice Jade Empress Scorpion rings. 255

Million-Year Soul Rings

Huo Yutong’s first Spirit Eye ring comes from the million-year Sky Dream Ice Silkworm. Its white, apparently ten-year appearance conceals its true quality; when Simulation is released during her Soul King advancement, the ring reveals a golden appearance. Her Ice Jade Empress Scorpion martial soul also begins with the Ice Empress’s four-hundred-thousand-year ring. 6 42 193

Million-year power can also be associated with divine enhancement rather than the direct absorption of a new million-year Soul Beast. Huo Yutong reports several million-year Soul Skills after her Divine Examinations, while Wang Dong’er’s eighth Sea God trial explicitly holds million-year Soul Rings in reserve. 340 346
