Appearance

When it first manifests, the Heavenly Dao takes the form of a cold, enormous eye emerging from a rift in the sky. Its gaze inspires terror and carries an authority likened to the ruthless Great Dao and impartial Heaven 161.

Nature

The Heavenly Dao is portrayed as fundamentally impartial and beyond ordinary living beings, enforcing the world's broader order rather than acting from personal sentiment. Its original manifestation is cold and heartless, scrutinizing Yuanshi's attempt to attack Di Jun and Tai Yi before punishing the Three Pure Ones 161.

Its bond with Hongjun is unequal: Hongjun draws upon and assists the Heavenly Dao's power, but the Heavenly Dao's will remains dominant. Ling Xiao later contrasts this with his own control over the Chaos Heavenly Dao, where the Heavenly Dao is only one part of him rather than his master 262 330 339.

History

The Heavenly Dao first openly manifests during the Three Pure Ones' assault on the Sun Star. Its appearance halts Yuanshi's attack and brings down the Tribulation of Destruction upon Yuanshi, Laozi, and Tongtian, leaving the Primordial World's mighty figures in awe of its impartial authority 161.

During Ling Xiao's seizure of the Sun Star, the Heavenly Dao awakens with overwhelming killing intent. It covers the Primordial World in pressure far beyond that of ordinary Sages and retaliates after Ling Xiao removes the Sun Star from its natural position 330 331. Ling Xiao then attempts to seal it with the Chaos Heaven-Sealing Technique. Although the Heavenly Dao strikes back and leaves severe Dao wounds on him, its strength is suppressed and its aura becomes noticeably weaker 332 333.

Hongjun's attempts to exploit the Heavenly Dao eventually destabilize it. As its seals lift, its power unexpectedly continues to weaken; Ling Xiao attributes this to Hongjun suffering backlash. Hongjun later confirms the truth of Ling Xiao's accusation that he swallowed the Heavenly Dao in pursuit of greater power 434 436.

After Hongjun's fall, a newly born Heavenly Dao appears over the Primordial World. Houtu attempts to devour it as part of her plan to unite Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, but Ling Xiao intervenes and declares that the Heavenly Dao belongs to him 452 466 468. Under Ling Xiao's control, it becomes a part of his power and is rebuilt with new rules that allow more beings to pursue Sagehood and higher cultivation 494 495.

Ling Xiao later strengthens the Heavenly Dao by restoring its damaged laws and raising the Primordial World into a more complete great world 815. During Luo Hou's emergence, it unleashes a massive lightning tribulation against the West and declares the Heavenly Demon Tribulation, calling on all beings to fight both external demons and the demons within their hearts 825. It is subsequently lost as the Devil Race's invasion escalates into a world-spanning war 826.
