Background / History
Ryūchi Cave and the alliance with Kumogakure
The White Snake Sage founded Ryūchi Cave and personally selected its elders. Its hierarchy placed her above the Three Snake Princesses, who served her and assessed senjutsu applicants, and the great snakes who pursued power without human transformation 42 45 108.
After Lin Qing killed Tagorihime, she ordered Ichikishimahime and Tagitsuhime to ally with Kumogakure and assist its operation to capture Sasuke. Ryūchi Cave sought revenge through the village rather than confronting Lin Qing directly 45 99.
When Lin Qing retaliated against Ryūchi Cave, she sent Manda and Garaga to fight him. She promised Manda fifty years' use of the Dragon Snake Treasure Orb and half her stored human “snacks.” Privately, she regarded both powerful, increasingly disobedient snakes as expendable and used Lin Qing to remove them 104 105.
Defeat and the Dragon Pill
After both defenders were killed, the Sage offered wealth and a face-saving settlement. Lin Qing refused to abandon his question about whether she had eaten humans. She revealed her true form, fought him, and openly consumed captives while taunting his inability to kill her 105 106.
Lin Qing discovered that her regeneration depended on the earth. He launched her into the sky, while Sasuke's Ninjutsu Nullification interrupted her attempt to reconnect through a stone pillar. Whitesnake delayed her escape with an illusion, allowing Lin Qing and Star Platinum to finish her during Time Stop. Her death awarded 3,000 Soul Shards 107.
The aftermath revealed people kept alive for consumption and a shattered golden egg containing her memories, intended to hatch into new snakes. Two hundred survivors were subsequently sent to Kirigakure under Aoshe's protection 108 110.
Lin Qing preserved her enormous head and discovered a Dragon Pill within it. When he consumed the pill, her remnant consciousness attempted to seize his body. He resisted and absorbed her power, achieving a purer dragon transformation than she had ever attained before breaking off the resulting horns 117 121.
Memory-bearing successors
The later White Snake Sages are snakes carrying the original's memories, not an uninterrupted survival of her slain body. No. 1 sought Kabuto Yakushi's help to recover her former strength; No. 2 pursued resources among weaker summoning beasts. Both eventually joined Kabuto and Hidan in an attempt to recover Orochimaru's discs and Hidan's body from the Research Institute 176.
No. 2 remained in the Institute's server room, replacing expected disc data with her own memories to conceal the intrusion. She died there, leaving the Institute with part of the Sage's senjutsu and cultivation knowledge 177 180.
By the crisis involving Toneri, only No. 1 and No. 18 remained. Each had sought an opportunity to devour the other and become the sole White Snake Sage, but their priorities diverged 334.
No. 18 and the defense of the world
No. 18 proposed combining her power with the Great Toad Sage's and Katsuyu Sage's to make Lin Qing the center of a world-spanning Super Sage Mode. The plan allowed him to protect the Ninja World while Sasuke's team worked to restore the moon's transfer passage 333.
No. 1 recognized that No. 18's contribution endangered her Sage Body and ability to continue cultivating. Her willingness to take that risk prompted No. 1 to question her own cowardice 334.
No. 18 later disclosed Isshiki's existence, a secret the original Sage had deliberately avoided sharing. Her stated concern was the world itself: Toneri's actions convinced her that the alien Ōtsutsuki showed it no respect. By the later Research Institute assault, she was known as Android 18 and had rejected the original Sage's identity in favor of her own path 354 368.
No. 1 and the “old world”
No. 1 continued working with Kabuto and Obito against Lin Qing. Their preparations included improving Impure World Reincarnation, modifying White Zetsu cells, and enhancing Kabuto through cell implantation 277 300 352.
She led five reincarnated Kage-level fighters against the Research Institute to recover Hidan, Orochimaru's disc, and Ame-no-Futodama-no-Mikoto's Mangekyō. The Institute's automated weapons and Sky Battleship support forced her to request more reincarnated fighters, but she retrieved the objectives 368 369.
A subsequent assault brought Madara and other resurrected powerhouses into the Institute. Itachi guided the attackers into a trap that stranded them on the moon. Madara later attempted to kill her, but Itachi intervened 392 393 394 395 406.
After giving Madara her heart and concentrated power, No. 1 became as weak as an ordinary venomous snake. She continued directing the reincarnated army with Itachi's assistance, driven by the original Sage's final obsession: killing Lin Qing. Itachi ultimately abandoned his allies, enabling Android 18 to stab her 397 406.
Appearance
The Sage initially appears as an elderly woman before revealing an enormous white serpent body 104 105.
- Human form: Aged face, narrowed serpent eyes, and a raspy voice; reclines against a large cushion while smoking a pipe 104.
- True form: Pure-white scales with a jade-like luster, a purple silk forehead protector, a red night-luminescent pearl on her head, and two golden rings around her tail 105.
- Size: Her severed head is comparable to a locomotive and exceeds the Ghost Room's storage capacity 110.
- Dragon-transformation features: Four emerging claws, the last visibly withered, appear during her final aerial battle 107.
- Memory-bearing bodies: Later successors appear as small white venomous snakes. No. 1 coils around Orochimaru's revived body's neck with her tail embedded in its spine 176.
Personality
The original Sage calls herself a pragmatist who remains in the “present.” She values survival over victory, reasoning that even formidable human opponents will eventually die while she can reclaim surrendered treasures later. Her willingness to sacrifice troublesome subordinates reflects the same calculation 105 106.
Her composure depends heavily on confidence in her longevity and earth-based immortality. She expects reverence from younger beings, treats humans as food, and becomes openly contemptuous when Lin Qing refuses her settlement. Once separated from the earth, that arrogance gives way to panic, resentment, and thoughts of killing his friends and family 105 106 107.
Her successors develop distinct priorities despite sharing her memories. No. 1 insists she is the White Snake Sage herself—not merely an inheritance or memory vessel—and opposes a new world with no place for her. No. 18 instead accepts responsibility toward the world and abandons the original identity. No. 2's fatal infiltration and No. 18's dangerous cooperation make No. 1 briefly question whether she deserves to be the final survivor 334 354 368.
Abilities & Skills
Earth Fusion and Regeneration
Her original body draws Natural Energy and life force directly from the earth 106.
- Regenerates instantly after Lin Qing and Star Platinum reduce her body to pulp 106.
- Replenishes through the earth without the expected reduction in her life-force field 106.
- Loses this effectively inexhaustible supply when kept airborne; her personal reserves can then be depleted 107.
- Her earth-based power has a fatal environmental weakness: the sky 118.
Sage Art: White Rage Technique
Releases a red dragon holding a pearl, which rotates and explodes into intense light, sound, and vibration 106.
- Disrupts the target's senses and bodily movement 106.
- Interferes with Lin Qing's circulation of Ripple and Natural Energy 106.
- Serves as a disabling technique before her earth-based attacks 106.
Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation
Grants movement and “life” to inorganic matter; the technique derives from her fusion with the earth 106.
- Shapes rocks into venomous snakes, blades, spears, and enormous hands 106.
- Raises pillars that can reconnect her airborne body with the earth 107.
- Super Inorganic Reincarnation animates the ground within a three-kilometer radius, producing earthquake-like upheaval and waves of earth 106.
- The earth's attacks fail to reach Lin Qing and Sasuke once they climb approximately one thousand meters 106.
- Sasuke's Ninjutsu Nullification briefly prevents her from using the technique 107.
Perception and Communication
The original Sage claims that her eyes can observe everything happening in the Ninja World; she specifically reveals that she watched Lin Qing's battle with Yugito 106.
- Broad perception makes surprise attacks and immediate disc extraction difficult 107.
- No. 1 senses anomalies associated with an erased timeline and warns Obito 390.
- Uses telepathic and soul-link communication to coordinate with Kabuto and Obito 369 390 394.
- Her soul-link becomes unreliable inside the Research Institute's trap 394.
Dragon Transformation
Cultivates toward becoming a dragon but never completes the pure transformation she desires 107 121.
- Produces claws and takes flight during her attempt to return to the ground 107.
- Releases her scales as a barrage of blades 107.
- Her Dragon Pill enables Lin Qing to access her transformation power and gain earth-based amplification to his Ripple, Natural Energy, spirit, and recovery 121.
Memory Preservation and Possession
Maintains contingencies that preserve her memories beyond bodily death 108 121.
- A golden egg carries memories intended for newly hatched snakes 108.
- The Dragon Pill holds a remnant consciousness capable of attempting possession of its consumer 121.
- Memory-bearing successors can pursue separate alliances and goals 176 334.
- Successors seek to devour one another and combine their powers 176 334.
Research and Reincarnated Forces
No. 1 supplies technical expertise to Kabuto and helps build their military capabilities 176 277.
- Helps revive Orochimaru's body, though it remains an empty shell without his extracted discs 176.
- Plans to teach Kabuto Ryūchi Cave's senjutsu 222.
- Works on strengthening Impure World Reincarnation with extremely yin Natural Energy suited to the dead 277.
- Improves White Zetsu cells by combining Hashirama cells' advantages with Orochimaru cells' fusion properties 300.
- Directs reincarnated fighters, including five Kage-level powerhouses, and applies restrictions to Hashirama and Madara 368 369 393.
Equipment / Items
- Smoking pipe — Used by the original Sage and No. 1; cigarettes and cigars also appear among the successors 104 334 368.
- Dragon Snake Treasure Orb — A Ryūchi Cave treasure offered to Manda for fifty years. Jiraiya recalls that the Sage possessed an orb refined over a thousand years with exceptional Natural Energy manipulation 42 104.
- Dragon Pill — Stored inside her severed head, which preserves its life essence like a vacuum seal. Also conceals her possession contingency 117 121.
- Golden egg — Memory-preservation contingency found shattered after her death 108.
- Ame-no-Futodama-no-Mikoto's Mangekyō — Stolen by No. 1 from the Institute's central computer room for her group's deduction plan 369.
Relationships
- Lin Qing — Her killer and principal enemy. The original attempts to possess him through the Dragon Pill; No. 1 inherits her fixation on killing him, while No. 18 chooses cooperation 107 121 333 397.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Target of her Kumogakure-backed capture operation. His Ninjutsu Nullification helps prevent her original body's escape 99 107.
- Tagorihime — Trusted confidante and personally selected elder responsible for Ryūchi Cave's cultivation trials. Her death precedes the alliance against Lin Qing 42 45 99.
- Ichikishimahime and Tagitsuhime — Snake Princesses dispatched to aid Kumogakure. Tagitsuhime survives that operation but later dies under the Sage's own earth upheaval while fleeing 99 103 108.
- Manda and Garaga — Powerful, increasingly disobedient subordinates whom she sends against Lin Qing and regards as expendable 104 105.
- Aoshe — Former gate guard. After the original's death, serves Lin Qing and betrays No. 1's infiltration team by summoning Sasuke 104 110 177.
- Kabuto Yakushi — No. 1's research partner and ally in reviving Orochimaru, developing senjutsu, and improving reincarnated fighters 176 222 277.

Trivia
- Not the Stand Whitesnake: Lin Qing's similarly named Stand helps defeat her by creating the illusion that delays her return to the earth 107.
- Posthumous shrine: Mount Myōboku's toads leave offerings before her head, treating the only deceased sage among the three holy lands as an intermediary with the underworld. Jiraiya places a small Orochimaru carving beside it 122.
- A threatening prayer: Lin Qing later offers an orange before her head and says that, if things go badly and he dies, he will find her in the underworld and beat her up 272.
