| Role | Combat mobile suit and computer-controlled opponent in pilot simulations 4 59 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1 1 |
Design and Capabilities
- Armor — Standard Moebius Gatling guns, linear guns and fixed 40 mm Vulcan cannons cannot penetrate the Ginn's plating through ordinary hits. Its rear propulsion system, cockpit and head sensors remain exploitable targets 4 6 26.
- Mobility — The Ginn is agile enough to make wire-guided missiles difficult to land. Its limbs carry attitude-control thrusters; neglecting the legs leaves ten of those thrusters unused 4 35.
- Armament — Ginns are shown using 76 mm machine guns. Some carry heavy particle cannons or other specialized weapons 59 151.
- Operation — Piloting one places a heavy computational burden on a Natural. Xu De nevertheless learns to operate a captured Ginn, including controlling its two arms independently 4 47 55.
Variants and Modifications
| Version | Distinguishing features |
|---|---|
| Silver-white Ginn | An Earth Alliance-operated unit assigned to Xu De. Its paint and friendly identification codes distinguish it from ZAFT machines; its performance initially appears comparable to an ordinary Ginn 55 56 59. |
| High Maneuver Type Ginn | Uses exceptionally powerful thrusters for high-speed combat, at considerable battery cost. Dearka's unit carries a heavy particle cannon 151 152. |
| Underwater-modified Ginn | Shiho Hahnenfuss's blue-painted unit has a streamlined, pressure-resistant shell, torpedo launchers on both arms and a Phonon Pulse High-Energy Cannon 93. |
| Engineering-use Ginn | Orb's three earth-yellow export units are unarmed and limited to 50% of a standard Ginn's output 134. |
| Upgraded Ginn | A later upgrade raises overall performance by 32%. Its 2.0 operating system also increases the difficulty of operation, putting it beyond most Naturals 133. |
Story Role
The Ginn serves as the computer-controlled opponent in the World Tree recruit screening. No recruit initially manages a solo victory, but Xu De uses debris and the Moebius's smaller frame to get behind one and disable its main thruster without taking a hit 4 6. In the battle following the station's collapse, he shoots down a Ginn and helps Hans's group capture another with its body largely intact 16 18 19.
The captured machines enable Earth Alliance pilot assessments and Xu De's subsequent deployment in the silver-white Ginn. Fighting alongside Moody and Draco, he uses it against ZAFT Ginns near Ptolemy; their team's results help establish the Alliance's ability to field mobile suits in combat 35 55 59 64. Ginns later appear in high-mobility, specialized and upgraded forms as the fighting continues 93 133 151.
