Ch. 17The Ominous Signs of War!

After the Kumogakure envoys’ deaths became public, Konoha’s leaders prepared for a conflict that Jiuming expected to come. When Kumogakure forces advanced toward the Land of Hot Water and Konoha lost contact with its delegation, Danzō moved quickly to take charge of the border response.

  • An Anbu operative reported that Kumogakure forces were advancing toward the Land of Hot Water and that Konoha’s delegation had been out of contact for two hours.
  • Danzō ordered Units 1 through 30 to the border and directed them to requisition the border guards so the fighting would take place in the Land of Hot Water.

Ch. 18The Ninja Academy's Entrance Test!

  • Kuming met Shikaichi Nara, who explained that the entrance test had three parts: shuriken throwing, Taijutsu, and wilderness survival.
  • Kuming realized he had never trained in shurikenjutsu and considered how he might handle the test.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi addressed the assembled children before a teacher separated them into age groups and explained the shuriken test and its passing scores.
  • Kuming raised his hand and asked whether he could still enter the Academy if he failed one test because he had never learned shurikenjutsu.
  • The Academy teacher recognized Kuming as Lady Mito's child, and Hiruzen Sarutobi studied him with curiosity.

Ch. 20Family Background, Bloodline!

Jiuming learned that failing the Shurikenjutsu test would disqualify him from early admission, then watched older candidates demonstrate their skills and civilian children struggle. As the under-six group began, he was called up first, with the Third Hokage watching him expectantly.

  • Jiuming heard that he had to meet the standard in Shurikenjutsu, alongside the other subjects, to pass the entrance exam.
  • Hizashi Hyuga hit all five bullseyes and received an excellent score and a tentative place in the fifth-year preparatory Class A.
  • The older candidates finished their tests, and several children from the six-to-eight-year-old group failed, many of them civilian children with no Shurikenjutsu training.
  • Jiuming reflected on how family background and bloodline gave clan children an advantage over children from ordinary families.
  • The teacher called Jiuming first for the under-six group, while the Third Hokage watched with keen interest.

Ch. 21The Tallest Tree Catches the Wind!

Uzumaki Kuming used a chakra-infused shuriken during his Ninja Academy test, accidentally blasting a crater into the ground and drawing Hiruzen Sarutobi’s attention. Hiruzen passed him and provisionally placed him in Class 1-A, while a masked ninja watched from the shadows and slipped away.

  • Kuming realized he had no shuriken, borrowed some from Jiudai, and tried to limit his chakra to protect the Yin Seal.
  • Kuming threw a chakra-infused shuriken that missed the target and created a huge crater, while the blast and wind knocked several children down.
  • Jiudai reprimanded Kuming for using chakra, but Hiruzen stopped him and declared that Kuming had passed, provisionally assigning him to Class 1-A.
  • Kuming returned to the lineup, pleased with his result, as a masked ninja quietly left and Hiruzen noticed the departure.

  • Hizashi activated his Byakugan and attacked Jiudai, who dodged his opening strikes and kicked him away.
  • Hizashi used the Eight Trigrams, Sixty-Four Palms and struck Jiudai twice, but Jiudai evaded the rest with the Substitution Technique and gave Hizashi an excellent score.
  • The other children struggled to land a hit on Jiudai, while Kuming stepped forward to take the first turn for the under-eight group.
  • Kuming charged Jiudai with a fast kick, cleared a fallen student from the field, and rushed at Jiudai again.

Ch. 23Run After Showing Off~

Uzumaki Jiuming defeated Jiudai in a Taijutsu exchange and passed his assessment, drawing the Third Hokage’s attention as a possible future Jinchuriki candidate. After the remaining young students passed their tests, Jiudai announced that the successful students would begin a week-long wilderness survival test the next morning.

  • Uzumaki Jiuming used his speed and strength to throw Jiudai to the ground, then declined to continue fighting after Jiudai invited him to attack again.
  • Jiudai praised Jiuming’s Taijutsu and gave him an excellent score after the Third Hokage signaled that the assessment could end.
  • The Third Hokage considered whether Jiuming could be raised as a less risky Jinchuriki candidate before Lady Mito’s death.
  • The other students in the under-eight group completed their Taijutsu tests and all received excellent scores.
  • Jiudai ended the assessments and told the students who passed the first two tests to gather at Konoha’s entrance at eight the next morning for a week-long wilderness survival test.

  • Kushina and Minato lingered over their goodbye at the Uzumaki residence until Jiuming went inside on his own.
  • Jiuming learned the final test would be a week-long wilderness survival exercise and prepared three storage scrolls with Military Ration Pills and fresh water.

Ch. 25The Difficulty of the Exam!

Jiuming and Uzumaki Kuming began the Ninja Academy’s third entrance exam, a seventy-five-kilometer journey to a temple outside Konoha. Jiuming raced ahead alone while Kuming stopped in the rain to build a shelter and spend the night.

  • Jiudai explained that students had to reach a temple seventy-five kilometers away within ten days, while Chunin followed to assess them.
  • Jiuming left alone at high speed through the forest, and Shikaichi Nara teamed up with other children after missing his chance to ask Jiuming.
  • Hizashi Hyuga gathered a group of eight students and led them out of Konoha.
  • Minato Namikaze followed Uzumaki Kuming, who kept running through the rain until exhaustion forced him to stop.
  • Uzumaki Kuming built an A-frame shelter beneath a giant tree, lit a fire with his lighter, ate, set warning seals, and went to sleep.
