History
Founding
Konoha was created when the Senju and Uchiha Clans ended their conflict, relocated their people to a shared settlement, and received the Land of Fire daimyo's recognition. Hashirama Senju and Senju Fujima used Wood Release: Super Large-Scale Housing Construction to turn the forested site into more than a thousand residences. 13
Madara Uchiha chose the name Konoha Ninja Village after looking through a leaf in his hand. The settlement was envisioned as a place where children could train at an academy rather than be sent into clan warfare. 14
Madara became the First Hokage and Hashirama the Deputy Hokage under a dual-leadership arrangement proposed by Senju Fujima. In exchange for financial and material support, Konoha agreed to protect the Land of Fire and accept paid missions from its daimyo. 15
Expansion and unification
Konoha fought the First Ninja World War against Sunagakure, Kumogakure, Iwagakure, and Kirigakure in September of Konoha Year One. It defeated all four fronts within a day, ending the war in victory. 99 117
Following the war, Madara and Hashirama compelled the four great villages to merge into Konoha. Their shinobi were ordered to relocate to the Land of Fire, while their original settlements became Konoha branches guarded by Konoha personnel. 142 143
Konoha subsequently issued merger notices to every remaining small ninja village. Its population rose to approximately 450,000 people, including fewer than 150,000 shinobi. 152 153
Governance and institutions
| Institution / Office | Function and leadership |
|---|---|
| Hokage system | Madara Uchiha served as First Hokage, with Hashirama Senju as Deputy Hokage. By a later period, both had retired; Tobirama Senju was Second Hokage and Izuna Uchiha Deputy Hokage. 15 192 |
| Anbu | Initially answered directly to the two Hokage. It handled village protection and evacuation during major threats. 20 117 |
| Root | Originally led by Tobirama and Izuna for intelligence gathering and assassination. Senju Fujima later became its leader. 20 192 |
| Anbu divisions | Tie Kui led the Assassination Division, while Hiruzen Sarutobi led the Interrogation Division. 192 |
| Barrier Squad | Maintained a village-wide barrier developed with Uzumaki sealing techniques. It detected intruders below jōnin level and could withstand standard Kage-level attacks. 23 |
| Council of Ten Elders | Created to integrate former Kage and major clan leaders into Konoha's governance after unification. 150 |
| Ninja Academy | Established to train children as shinobi within the village system rather than through constant clan warfare. 14 26 |
Development and civic life
- Housing construction — Wood Release enabled Konoha's rapid construction and later expansion into villa districts spanning dozens of kilometers. 13 149
- Villa sales — Hashirama and Senju Fujima proposed selling newly built homes to support Konoha's expansion and finances. 149 150
- Big Villa Company — Hashirama assigned Senju members with Wood Release to villa construction and established a dedicated building company. 188
- Unified examinations — Konoha organized Chūnin and Jōnin Exams for shinobi absorbed from former villages, with rank-based rewards and standardized Konoha forehead protectors. 151
- Grand Tournament — An annual Ninja World Tournament was held in Konoha under the oversight of the Hokage and elders. 254
- Internal violence policy — Fighting was forbidden inside the village. Those seeking lethal duels could sign life-and-death agreements at an arena thirty li outside Konoha; deaths there were not eligible for revival or retaliation. 254
Major conflicts and crises
| Event | Outcome |

| First Ninja World War | Konoha repelled the combined forces of the four other great ninja villages and secured a decisive victory. 99 117 |
| Ape Rock attack | A giant stone ape shattered Konoha's barrier and caused severe destruction. Konoha's defenders deployed the Four Red Yang Formation while Madara's clone and Hashirama's Wood Human Clone counterattacked. 117 |
| Jishiki Ōtsutsuki raid | Jishiki captured Mito Uzumaki and six other Tailed Beast jinchūriki, defeated Konoha's clones, and devastated the village. Madara and Hashirama abandoned their ongoing battles to return and defend Konoha. 120 |
| Tenshiki Ōtsutsuki invasion | Konoha prepared alternate-world evacuation routes for civilians as Madara, Hashirama, Tobirama, and Izuna moved to confront Tenshiki. 209 210 |
| God Tree rebellion | Hiruzen Sarutobi's faction used a God Tree to launch a surprise attack within Konoha, killing many Six Paths-level shinobi before survivors withdrew through a spatial passage. 221 |
Training initiatives
Konoha later adopted simulated wartime exercises to prepare its shinobi for future Ōtsutsuki threats. Senju Fujima created a sealed artificial battlefield through an ocular technique and barrier, dividing participants into six factions modeled after the former great nations and the Land of Rain. 240 287
The simulated battles used changing objectives, prohibited reinforcements after the start of a war, and continued until a faction was defeated. Senju Fujima revived fallen participants with the Rinne Rebirth Technique after the exercises. 287
