Background / History

VanCleef oversaw a concealed mountain-cavern base connected to Stormwind's extensive gold mines. The site housed stonemasons, engineers, laborers, and SI:7 agents under his command; he regarded the mines as vital to Stormwind's wealth and security. He was both a stonemason and a high-level SI:7 agent responsible for the base's defenses. 54 55

When Andy recognized him inside the mine base, VanCleef immediately tried to kill him rather than risk the location being exposed. Vanessa intervened, and VanCleef gave Andy a stark choice: join them or die. 54 He later complied with Lothar's evacuation order despite believing that it reflected Lothar's distrust of him. VanCleef dispatched the non-combatant craftsmen to Booty Bay, gathered roughly 200 SI:7 agents, sealed the mine exits, and led the force back toward Stormwind. 55 56

During Stormwind's evacuation, VanCleef and his agents fought beside Lothar and Shaw at the port for two days to protect departing civilians. His assassins suffered severe losses in the prolonged frontline battle, particularly once the Orcs deployed Ogres, forcing him to order a withdrawal. 56 After reaching Lordaeron, he voiced a harsh survivalist worldview: in chaotic times, only the strong could live on their own terms. 57

After Stormwind was restored, VanCleef had left SI:7 and taken charge of the Stonemasons Guild. He monitored the Westfall gold mine while planning for his own future, convinced that Stormwind's nobles had deliberately withheld the laborers' wages. 105 106 When Countess Katrana had protesting workers arrested and the council disbanded his guild, VanCleef openly confronted the councilors and demanded double compensation for his men. 106 107

Katrana offered him an agreement: intimidate the council into supporting her leadership, and she would free the imprisoned laborers, compensate them, and pay VanCleef's workers double wages. VanCleef accepted only after making the laborers' release a condition. 108 He carried out covert intimidation against the nobles, but Katrana repudiated the deal once she had secured control of the council. 109

Betrayed and enraged, VanCleef organized the laborers into a citywide protest. He initially intended to exploit the chaos to kill the nobles, but abandoned that plan when Shaw directed him toward the royal palace. 110 The demonstration ended in Queen Tiffin's death after an unknown assailant threw a stone. King Varian exiled VanCleef and the entire guild without paying their wages. 111

VanCleef led the exiles toward Westfall, intending to seize its gold mine, rebuild his strength, and eventually destroy Stormwind City. 111 By the time Andy confronted him later, VanCleef had taken control of a town, killed its mayor, and allowed opponents who refused to support him to die. 157 He was later killed during an attack; Vanessa's whereabouts afterward were unknown. 189

His loyalty did not extend to outsiders. He was secretive about the mine base, threatened Andy with death upon discovering that he knew his identity, and treated strength as the only reliable protection in a collapsing world. 54 57

The nobles' treatment of the guild transformed his resentment into open vengeance. Katrana's betrayal convinced him that promises and lawful appeals were meaningless, leading him to weaponize the laborers' anger and eventually embrace lethal control over Westfall. 109 110 157
