Background and History

During Stormwind's fall, Lothar directed the sea evacuation from the city's port. He ordered Taria and Varian to sail ahead while he remained behind with Stormwind soldiers, VanCleef, and Shaw, holding the port for two days and two nights until most evacuees had departed. 56

After reaching Lordaeron, he formally reported Stormwind's destruction to King Terenas and argued that the Orcs would continue their northern advance. Prince Arthas publicly belittled the fallen kingdom, but Lothar accepted the insult as truth rather than escalating the situation. 57 60 He later imposed a strict confinement order on his own men after a clash with Lordaeronian guards threatened negotiations for military support. 58

Lothar became one of the principal commanders of the Alliance coalition at Dun Morogh. He mourned the loss of Stormwind scouts, led a probing attack against Blackhand's Orc army, and organized the defense against repeated assaults, including Blackhand's deployment of giant Ogres. 72 73 74 After the Alliance forced the Horde's retreat, he pursued the Orcs through the Burning Steppes and returned to the ruins of Stormwind City, fulfilling his promise to reclaim the kingdom. 76

Following the reclamation, Lothar served as Regent Lord of Stormwind. When the Orcs invaded again, Lothar accepted a secret technique that temporarily restored his strength by consuming his remaining lifespan. At Blackrock Mountain, Lothar accepted Orgrim Doomhammer's duel after recognizing him as the Orc who had killed his son. His temporary restoration failed during the fight; Orgrim shattered his sword and inflicted fatal injuries. Andy and Turalyon killed Orgrim afterward, while Lothar died satisfied that he had fallen as a warrior on the battlefield. His body was returned to Stormwind City for a funeral. 124 125
