Background / History

Aizen initially maintained the public image of an approachable, harmonious Fifth Division captain. His division was widely regarded as one of Seireitei's friendliest, and many academy graduates hoped to join it; this façade concealed both his real strength and the true nature of Kyōka Suigetsu. 34

More than fifty years before the main conflict, Aizen used the Hōgyoku to Hollowfy multiple captains, including Muguruma Kensei, Otoribashi Rojuro, Hirako Shinji, and Aikawa Love. The incident also drove Yoruichi Shihōin and Urahara Kisuke from Soul Society, while the victims became the Visored and lived in hiding in the World of the Living. 2 16

Aizen traveled to Hueco Mundo with Gin Ichimaru and Tōsen Kaname intending to occupy it, but the King of Hueco Mundo proved immune to Kyōka Suigetsu and possessed Reiatsu comparable to Captain-Commander Yamamoto. Unable to force the King into Arrancarization, Aizen accepted a conditional alliance: Hueco Mundo would support his assault on Soul Society if Yamamoto were killed. 2 3

The alliance gave Aizen one hundred elite Adjuchas as experimental subjects. Using the Hōgyoku and the King's ability to reproduce prior states, he developed a reliable process for creating Adjuchas-level Arrancar and built a faction within Las Noches. 35 68

Appearance

Aizen is a bespectacled man whose outwardly mild appearance supports his carefully cultivated reputation as a gentle, scholarly captain. When confronting major opponents, he may remove his glasses and reveal an openly piercing, ambitious gaze. 1 2 227

  • Commonly wears glasses while presenting himself as a Fifth Division captain. 34
  • Carries the Zanpakutō Kyōka Suigetsu. 2
  • His body gains extraordinary regenerative capacity after Hōgyoku transformation. 326

Personality

Aizen is intensely intelligent, patient, and controlling. He approaches opponents, institutions, and even allies as pieces in a larger design, frequently withholding his real intentions while gathering information or testing reactions. He considers lesser forces irrelevant when they cannot threaten him, as shown by his dismissal of the Tsunayashiro Clan's private army. 123

His ambition is rooted in contempt for Soul Society's hidden foundations and stagnation. He seeks to replace the Soul King and reshape what he sees as an unjust world, yet his methods include human experimentation, Hollowfication, coercion, and the disposal of subordinates once they no longer serve a purpose. 2 28 227 238

Despite his arrogance, Aizen can reassess people who surpass his expectations. He recognizes that he underestimated Aoto and reflects that his own inability to cultivate genuine friendships has left him without peers who can keep pace with him. 242

Abilities & Skills

Kyōka Suigetsu

Aizen's Zanpakutō induces complete hypnosis rather than simple visual illusion. Targets supplied with its initial and final conditions fill in unseen details themselves, making the deception difficult to identify from within. 28

  • Can deceive even highly experienced opponents; Aizen uses it to defeat Ōetsu Nimaiya, the creator of Zanpakutō. 335
  • Its hypnosis can be avoided by genuinely grasping the blade before activation. 90
  • The King of Hueco Mundo is unaffected because of his lack of conventional eyes, exposing a major limitation in Aizen's initial plan. 2

Overwhelming Reiatsu

Aizen possesses exceptional spiritual pressure, capable of directly crushing far weaker enemies rather than merely overpowering them in conventional combat. 478

  • His Reiatsu keeps nearby souls away from active battlefields. 164
  • He kills two Kōtotsu in succession by crushing them with spiritual pressure. 478
  • He can reveal and suppress his Reiatsu with great precision. 325

Hōgyoku Research and Transformation

Aizen uses the Hōgyoku to break boundaries between Shinigami and Hollow powers, create Arrancar, and pursue his own evolution. 28 69

  • Perfected Adjuchas Arrancarization through repeated experimentation. 35
  • Conducts Hollowfication experiments on Shinigami and artificial Hollows. 28 89
  • Seeks Soul King fragments and a Fullbringer ability capable of accelerating the Hōgyoku's power. 28 243
  • His transformed body regenerates rapidly and resists Kamishini no Yari's poison. 299 326

Kidō

Aizen uses Kidō offensively and for battlefield control. 175 300

  • Preserves corpses with Kidō, preventing them from dispersing into spirit particles. 175
  • Effortlessly defeats a powerful Hollow with Kidō blasts. 300

Strategy, Infiltration, and Information Gathering

Aizen combines covert access, historical research, and psychological manipulation to prepare long-term operations. 66 123

  • Freely infiltrates the Great Spirit Book Gallery and accesses sealed historical records. 66
  • Deduces the Tsunayashiro Clan's involvement in the attack on the World of the Living Organization. 123
  • Uses the King of Hueco Mundo's true name, found in a surviving written record, to force access to Las Noches. 423
  • Exploits information unknown to Soul Society to manipulate wider events. 493

  • Tōsen Kaname — Loyal subordinate and fellow believer in changing Soul Society's unjust order; participates in Aizen's Hollowfication research. 2 3 28
  • King of Hueco Mundo — Initially an attempted target for manipulation, later Aizen's conditional ally and eventual rival. Their alliance is founded on a shared hatred of Soul Society, but Aizen ultimately gains leverage through the King's true name. 2 35 423
  • Starrk — A wary Vasto Lorde whose Arrancar transformation ability interests Aizen as a possible source of Hōgyoku-related material and information. 69
  • Urahara Kisuke — Strategic rival and former target of Aizen's schemes. Urahara's Hōgyoku is one of the resources Aizen seeks, and Urahara successfully deceives him with a decoy Gigai. 69 324
  • Yamamoto Genryūsai — Aizen's foremost obstacle within Soul Society and the King of Hueco Mundo's required target for their alliance. 2 213 326
