| Strong Kage-level — estimated classification | 225 | The revived Orochimaru is assessed as likely belonging to the Strong Kage-level rank; this is an estimate rather than a separately demonstrated breakthrough. |
Background / History
Hiruzen’s Disciple and Political Rival
Orochimaru was raised as Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and assigned to work alongside Danzo as a monitor. Instead, he aligned with Danzo, who supported his candidacy for Hokage. Hiruzen interpreted their cooperation as a betrayal, promoted Minato as his successor, and later expelled Orochimaru under the pretext of human experimentation 25.
Orochimaru’s research helped establish a way to balance Hashirama’s Yang power with the Sharingan’s Yin power. When he sees Danzo’s implanted arm, he recognizes the implementation of his own advice 22.
Akatsuki and the Pursuit of the Sharingan
Within Akatsuki, Orochimaru conducted experiments funded by the organization, including research into resurrection through cursed seals. He was once partnered with Itachi, giving Itachi firsthand knowledge of those projects 252.
According to Keiichi’s explanation to Sasuke, Orochimaru unsuccessfully targeted Akatsuki’s leader before turning his attention to Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Itachi defeated him with genjutsu, exposing a weakness associated with his reincarnation technique. Orochimaru subsequently left Akatsuki and pursued Sasuke as a prospective vessel whose eyes could eventually evolve 102 252.
Forest of Death
Orochimaru infiltrates the Chunin Exams disguised as a Grass ninja and overwhelms Sasuke. Keiichi intervenes through a Danzo clone, preventing Orochimaru from planting the Heavenly Cursed Seal during their encounter 22 23.
During the confrontation, Orochimaru avoids eye contact and uses Earth Clones to deny the supposed Danzo an opportunity to cast ocular genjutsu. He retreats despite an offer to cooperate against Hiruzen. Afterward, he continues monitoring Sasuke through Kabuto, confident that Sasuke’s desire for power will eventually bring him willingly to his side 23 24 28.
Rebellion and Return to Konoha
Orochimaru arranges cooperation with Sunagakure through Kabuto and helps transport its shinobi past Konoha’s patrols inside giant snakes. He also exploits Aburame Tatsuma’s unnatural obedience without knowing exactly who placed him under genjutsu 31 44 46.
He then turns against Rasa, intervening in the attempted abduction of the Land of Fire’s Daimyo. The Sound Four erect a barrier while Rasa is distracted by genjutsu; Orochimaru immobilizes him with a Binding Curse Seal and decapitates him with the Kusanagi Sword 52 53.
By returning with the rescued Daimyo, Orochimaru presents himself as Konoha’s protector. Support from the Daimyo, the Aburame Clan, and Root remnants helps him become Acting Hokage despite objections to his criminal history 55 57.
Acting Hokage and Sasuke’s Apprenticeship
Orochimaru has Keiichi imprisoned on accusations connected to the rebellion, using him in a struggle with Konoha’s jonin. He later exchanges Keiichi’s release for control of Sunagakure’s prisoners, removing potential witnesses to his own involvement in the uprising 57 58 60.
He attempts to recruit Keiichi through threats concerning his secrets and an offer to teach Impure World Reincarnation. Sasuke, meanwhile, seeks him out voluntarily. Orochimaru tests Sasuke against the Sound Four, accepts him as a disciple, and publicly formalizes the apprenticeship 61 72 73.
Urashiki and Knowledge of the Future
Orochimaru joins Jiraiya and Tsunade against Urashiki because he wants to investigate Ōtsutsuki reincarnation. His poison temporarily prevents Urashiki from fighting or manipulating time, but he deliberately withholds a killing blow to preserve his research subject. Urashiki escapes 83 84 85.
Orochimaru identifies the visiting adult Sasuke through the distinctive form of his Chidori. After surviving Sasuke’s Amaterasu and repeated pursuit, he notices that this Sasuke lacks the Heavenly Cursed Seal. Rather than abandon his plans, he concludes that his reincarnation safeguards require further preparation and becomes increasingly interested in the Rinnegan 85 86 87.
Failed Hokage Appointment and Planned Resurrection
To prevent Tsunade from contesting the Hokage election, Orochimaru’s faction obstructs her return and forces her to choose between the election and defending Konoha’s border. He then drives Hyuga Hiashi out of the contest with false military intelligence 90 92 104 139.
Minato returns just before Orochimaru’s appointment is completed. Orochimaru refuses an opportunity to leave peacefully, consumes his strengthening medicine, and fights Keiichi’s group. Even his Yamata no Orochi transformation is defeated by Keiichi, Naruto, and Sasuke 140 142 143.
A small white snake escapes underground and enters Orochimaru’s preserved original body. With the medicine’s side effects already proving fatal, Orochimaru sacrifices his remaining life through One’s Own Life Reincarnation to revive Kabuto. He entrusts Kabuto with preparing his return three years later 143.
Final Return and Sealing
Kabuto prepares Orochimaru’s enhanced body in a hidden laboratory and revives him after the three-year interval. Orochimaru tests his new abilities and receives an army of modified cursed-seal users. As Kabuto dies, Orochimaru thanks him sincerely while intending to restore him through Impure World Reincarnation 218 219.
Orochimaru attacks Konoha expecting to defeat Minato openly. Instead, Boruto resists his genjutsu and overwhelms him with Uzuhiko and the Flying Thunder God. Boruto then cuts him into eight pieces, countering every prepared substitute-death method through knowledge supplied by a future Orochimaru who had taught him 226 227 228.
A separate remnant soul survives within Sasuke’s Heavenly Cursed Seal. Itachi deceives it into emerging as Yamata no Orochi, separates it from Sasuke, and seals it with the Totsuka Blade. The seal’s destruction removes Orochimaru’s route to rebirth through Sasuke 252.
Appearance
- Exam disguise: Replaces an examinee and appears as a Grass ninja during the Forest of Death encounter 22 25.
- Serpentine anatomy: Extends his tongue and produces snakes from his mouth; can shed his exterior and escape as a python 22 23 86.
- Clothing: Wears a trench coat over sleek, short-sleeved ninja attire during his confrontation with Jiraiya 69.
- Preserved original body: Stored in a crystal coffin with its face peeled away after he discarded it through Living Corpse Reincarnation 143.
- Resurrected body: Has unnatural grayish-white skin, ten Sharingan arranged in two vertical rows along his torso, and Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan concealed in a slit in his forehead 219.
Personality
Orochimaru prioritizes survival, knowledge, and immortality. He avoids risky experiments on himself until their safety is assured, maintains numerous hidden laboratories, and prepares escape plans before committing to battle. Discovering that his intended reincarnation fails in Sasuke’s future motivates him to add safeguards rather than surrender his ambition 87 102 143 218.
His curiosity can undermine practical victory. He spares Urashiki at a decisive moment because an Ōtsutsuki specimen matters more to him than eliminating the threat. His pursuit of political power is similarly ruthless: he manipulates witnesses, pressures opponents, and privately plans to dispose of the elders who support his appointment 60 85 140.
As an instructor, he is notably free of sectarian restrictions and willing to teach extensively. That openness does not make his relationships safe: he covets Sasuke’s body and treats failed subordinates as resources. His gratitude toward Kabuto is genuine, but it also includes the expectation that Kabuto will continue working for him after death 9 102 142 219.
Abilities & Skills
Scientific Research and Body Modification
- Develops reincarnation methods, cursed seals, and techniques for manipulating natural energy 84 93 252.
- Advises using Sharingan to balance Hashirama Cells; the same balance later stabilizes his modified body 22 219.
- Builds laboratories throughout the Shinobi World, including facilities staffed by Impure World Reincarnation subjects 218.
- Is considered valuable enough as a researcher that Keiichi repeatedly prefers preserving him over killing him 86 227.
Reincarnation and Survival Techniques
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: Allows him to change vessels, but its flaws leave him vulnerable to genjutsu. Sasuke is his intended future vessel 71 102 147.
- Cursed-seal rebirth: Stores a remnant of his soul in the Heavenly Cursed Seal, allowing an attempted resurrection even after his main body dies 86 252.
- Shedding: Escapes Amaterasu by leaving his exterior behind and transforming into a python 86.
- Decoys: Uses Earth Clones to misdirect pursuers and Shadow Clones to gather information 23 48 86.
- One’s Own Life Reincarnation: Sacrifices his life to revive Kabuto as part of their three-year resurrection arrangement 143.
- Limit: Boruto’s knowledge of his survival methods allows him to counter all prepared substitutes before they activate 228.
Cursed Seals and Senjutsu Research
- Heavenly Cursed Seal: Functions as both an enhancement and a potential vessel for Orochimaru’s soul; inspired by legends of Ōtsutsuki reincarnation 84 86.
- Stage Two: Opens a channel for natural-energy absorption, producing a crude Sage Mode with pronounced bodily changes and limited duration 93.
- Four Black Fog Formation: Holds a recipient between life and death, suppressing natural-energy backlash so fusion can be attempted repeatedly 82 93.
- Risk: Most recipients cannot withstand natural-energy erosion, accounting for the cursed seal’s high mortality rate 72 93.
- Personal enhancement: His resurrected body contains the Cursed Seal of the Earth, enabling him to absorb natural energy himself 219.
Eight Branches Technique
- Transforms into Yamata no Orochi using a large supply of senjutsu chakra 142.
- Draws the necessary energy from the Sound Four through their cursed seals, leaving them screaming and visibly diminished 142.
- Breaks Naruto’s first restraint, but is immobilized by the much stronger chains Naruto produces in Nine-Tails Chakra Mode 142.
- Can also emerge through the remnant soul hidden within Sasuke’s cursed seal 252.
Genjutsu and Sealing
- Killing-intent illusions: Induces nightmare-like visions and immobilizes inexperienced opponents. The technique later fails against the strengthened Keiichi, Naruto, and Sasuke, though Boruto initially remains affected 22 141.
- Hell Viewing Technique: Distracts Rasa long enough for the Sound Four to complete their barrier 52.
- Binding Curse Seal: Delivers an immobilizing seal through a sword wound, setting up Rasa’s execution 53.
- Anti-genjutsu precautions: Avoids eye contact and keeps his movements unpredictable when facing implanted Sharingan 23.
- Weakness: Itachi defeats him with the Binding Stake Technique; Orochimaru postpones further confrontation until he can address his reincarnation flaws 71 250.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
- Summons Manda for combat 23 84.
- Uses pythons to bind opponents and gathers venomous snakes around himself before battle 83 227.
- Employs giant snakes as concealed transports for more than a hundred Sunagakure shinobi 46.
- Produces and deploys the Kusanagi Sword through a snake emerging from his mouth 23 53.
Poison
- Uses a potent delayed-action toxin that stiffens Urashiki’s body and temporarily prevents his time manipulation 85.
- Exploits the resulting opening to sever Urashiki’s left arm rather than kill him 85.
Wood Release
- Acquired through the Hashirama Cells in his resurrected body 219.
- Deep Forest Emergence: Creates a forest domain spanning several hundred meters, with its plants obeying his commands 219.
- Violent Tree Spear: Used against Minato during his return attack, but interrupted when Boruto cuts off his arm 227.
- Regeneration: Hashirama Cells allow him to regrow an arm after amputating it to escape Uzuhiko’s effect 227.
Mangekyō Sharingan
- Uses Shisui’s transplanted eye to perceive chakra circulating inside Kabuto 219.
- Immediately learns a basic skeletal Susanoo capable of uprooting trees 219.
- Its defenses withstand ordinary ninja tools and Explosive Tags; Kabuto’s Chakra Scalpel penetrates only half an inch 219.
- Gains access to Kotoamatsukami, Shisui’s consciousness-controlling ocular technique 219.
- His enhanced genjutsu still fails to subdue Boruto during the return attack 227.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Extends and retracts at will; used for long-range thrusts and Rasa’s decapitation. Orochimaru also gives Sasuke a Kusanagi Sword 23 53 91.
- Strengthening medicine — Prepared for unforeseen opposition at the Hokage election; raises his power at a fatal cost 139 140 143.

“I'm sorry, but you had already lost the moment you were struck by my first sword; you just didn't know it yet.” 53
“Kabuto Yakushi, thank you. I am very satisfied with everything you have done for me.” 219
Trivia
- Becomes addicted to the Ninja Star Machine and loses a game duel to Keiichi, despite rapidly adapting to his strategies. The duel’s Sharingan mode is a game mechanic, not a physical power advancement 68 69.
- His unrestricted teaching contributes directly to his death: a future version gives Boruto his discarded substitute-death techniques as homework, providing the answers needed to counter this version’s escape preparations 228.
