Background / History

At fourteen, Kakashi had already lost his father, Hatake Sakumo, and his closest teammates. The accumulated losses left him listless and emotionally withdrawn; he wore a black mask and carried himself without the energy expected of someone his age. He served Minato Namikaze faithfully, delivering a Flying Thunder God kunai to Baishi on Minato’s behalf. 31 32

Baishi recognized Kakashi’s unresolved grief and used Sakumo’s broken chakra blade to teach him a Spirit Medium technique. Kakashi successfully entered the blade’s spiritual space and reunited with his father, finally admitting how deeply he had missed him. 32 33 Baishi later restored Rin as a spirit and housed her soul in a bone ring given to Kakashi. 35 38

In exchange for the possibility of reuniting with Obito, Kakashi accepted Baishi’s assignment to assist Akatsuki in the Land of Rain. He investigated the organization before approaching it, then joined under the alias Obito to honor his presumed-dead teammate. 34 38 39 He quickly established his combat value by defeating Kyusuke in a single exchange. 40

During the conflict with Hanzo, Kakashi allowed Sakumo to possess his body, revealing swordsmanship so similar to the White Fang’s that Hanzo and Hiruzen recognized the connection. 58 61 He then confronted the masked man controlling events in the Land of Rain, identified him as Obito, and vowed to bring him back to Konoha after Rin concluded that Obito had survived only through outside intervention. 60 61

After returning to Konoha, Kakashi reported that Baishi—identified in his account as Shiraishi—had sent him to infiltrate Akatsuki. He concealed the existence of Sakumo and Rin’s souls, fearing that Minato and Hiruzen would force him to let them rest. Minato authorized Kakashi to continue investigating Obito, provided he remained in contact and prioritized his safety. 86

Later, “Minato,” whose body was controlled by Madara Uchiha, ordered Kakashi to infiltrate Obito’s side. To make the cover credible, Kakashi was instructed to attempt an assassination of Hiruzen Sarutobi and defect from Konoha. 150 His attack wounded Hiruzen and used a follow-up explosive-tag trap; although presented as part of his cover, Kakashi’s resentment over Sakumo’s death gave the attempt genuine killing intent. 152

As a missing-nin, Kakashi returned to Amegakure and reunited with Obito. He agreed to join Obito and Yahiko’s plan while intending to fulfill his undercover mission and send intelligence back to Konoha. 153 154 He later confronted Madara in Amegakure and was offered the chance to revive Sakumo if he joined Madara and Orochimaru. 196
