Background / History

Tomb murals attribute the earliest known divine Nuo Opera Mask to Qu Zi, the Great Shaman of Chu. The inscriptions state that he carved a Nuoxi Mask to communicate with spirits and banish plagues; it could capture souls, and its dance could shake heaven and earth. After Chu's tragedy deepened, he carried his most bizarre and divine mask into the Miluo River and drowned himself. 38

An old masked man later recounts that the First Sage wielded the Nuo Opera Mask while purging evil entities, suppressing threats to Chu, and fighting ten thousand ghosts in the Netherworld for three years. According to him, the First Sage later used the mask in battle against descending Deities before sinking into the Miluo with it, after which its supernatural powers were lost. 40

The same account describes the mask as forged from the First Sage's heart's blood and capable of manifesting countless incarnations. Its stated powers include communicating with heaven and earth, absorbing the essence of sun and moon, channeling ghosts and Deities, altering weather through dance, and suppressing evil or soothing souls while still. 40

Jiang Ran recovered two significant masks from the ancient tomb: the shifting Martial God: Power mask and the pure-black Ancestral Nuo: Faceless. He chose Faceless as his life-bound mask and used it to awaken as a Nuo Opera Master. 42 44 45

Appearance

Nuo Opera Masks vary according to their materials, intended divine ability, and the spiritual essence used in their creation.

• Ancestral Nuo: Faceless is pure black, seamless, and initially without holes or patterns; when activated, it conforms perfectly to Jiang Ran's face. 45
