Background / History
Buggy initially led the Buggy Pirates in Orange Town, where his circus-themed crew looted the town’s vault. Ace incapacitated his crew with Conqueror’s Haki, overwhelmed Buggy’s Chop-Chop Fruit ambush, and forcibly recruited him into the Eclipse Pirates in exchange for survival and the promise of greater treasure. Buggy took the stolen gold with him but left Cabaji, Mohji, and Richie behind. 12
His first position aboard the Eclipse was effectively deckhand work, despite Ace styling it as the prestigious role of “Chief Chore-Master.” Buggy attempted to escape with stolen gems by separating his body and flying away, but Ace pursued him through the air with Geppo and returned him to the ship without taking the gems. 13
Buggy’s loyalty changed after Ace revealed that he was Gol D. Roger’s son. Having served as an apprentice aboard Roger’s ship, Buggy recognized Ace’s resemblance to his former captain and became emotionally devoted to him. Ace and Sabo subsequently put Buggy through physical training, Devil Fruit development, and Haki instruction. 14
As Eclipse entered the Grand Line, Buggy became a practical combatant and quartermaster. He used Seastone Knuckles to defeat gang leaders in Loguetown, stole the Barrier-Barrier Fruit and one hundred million Beli during a criminal deal, and later defeated CP9 agent Blueno by infiltrating Blueno’s Air Door with microscopic body fragments and planting a Special Buggy Ball. 22 85 91
Following Crocodile’s death, Buggy temporarily took charge of Baroque Works’ surviving agents. He assessed their practical abilities, recruited useful members for Eclipse, and brought Mr. 3 into the Logistics Department under his supervision. 254 264
Buggy later led the successful seizure of Southwest Supply Island. His plan divided Eclipse forces between the sea blockade, artillery suppression, street control, infiltration, and warehouse capture; he personally killed “Split Hammer” Galton after weakening him with poison bombs and coordinating with Mr. 3 and Bon Clay. 268
During the war against Totto Land, Buggy helped repel Cracker’s Biscuit Soldiers at Spice Port, captured Mont-d’Or and his library treasure, and supervised the recovery of valuables after the Big Mom Pirates’ defeat. 276 284 299
At Mary Geoise, Buggy’s awakened power allowed him to defeat Shiryu of the Rain. By combining micro-division, terrain manipulation, poison weapons, and debris control, he exhausted Shiryu and buried him beneath continually replenished stone and metal fragments. He claimed Shiryu’s sword, Raiu, afterward. 481 482
Appearance
Buggy is a red-nosed clown pirate with blue hair, clown makeup, and an exaggerated theatrical manner. He commonly wears a captain’s coat or dark red cape, using his appearance to project authority even when panicked. 12 14 268
- Conspicuous round red nose. 12
- Blue hair, often disturbed by Ace’s casual ruffling. 13
- Clown makeup that runs when he cries. 14
- Favors flamboyant captain’s coats and capes. 12 268
- Can separate his head, limbs, torso, and even facial features while retaining control. 76
Personality
Buggy is intensely greedy and motivated by gold, Devil Fruits, rare artifacts, and valuable warehouses. He routinely treats loot preservation as a strategic priority, whether planning an invasion or defending Eclipse-controlled territory. 268 274 299
He is cowardly when confronted by overwhelming force, initially surrendering to Ace almost immediately and repeatedly protesting difficult training. However, he remains useful under pressure: he improvises against stronger enemies, handles dangerous logistics work, and can fight decisively when his treasure, crew, or status is threatened. 12 14 268
Buggy possesses an enormous ego and constantly refers to himself as “This Great One.” His arrogance frequently becomes comic relief, particularly when others call him “Red Nose,” yet it also helps him project confidence to recruits and subordinates. 240 254 261
Despite his complaints, Buggy is loyal to Ace after learning of his connection to Roger. He accepts responsibility for Eclipse’s supplies, recruits, treasures, and logistics network, and openly stands with Ace even when meeting figures from his old life such as Shanks, Douglas Bullet, and Scopper Gaban. 14 311 368 396 407
Abilities & Skills
Chop-Chop Fruit
Buggy’s Paramecia-type Devil Fruit lets him separate his body into independently controlled pieces. Its natural defensive quality grants immunity to ordinary slashing attacks. 14 481
- Detaches hands, feet, limbs, and torso for independent aerial movement and surprise attacks. 15 22
- Can split preemptively to evade bullets, blades, hammers, and direct strikes. 22 268 481
- Uses microscopic body fragments to pass through small openings and harass opponents from inside their defenses. 85
- Can reassemble precisely after scattering his body over a wide area. 76 481
- His detached body has a practical control range; separating pieces too far reduces his control. 76
- Wide-area Haki shockwaves can scatter his fragments and strain him even if they do not land a conventional hit. 76 363
Awakened Object Manipulation
Buggy’s awakening extends the Chop-Chop Fruit beyond his own body, allowing him to split, move, recombine, and weaponize nearby materials. 456 467
- Breaks stone, metal, debris, and flooring into controllable fragments. 456 467
- Reforms dust and rubble into large striking constructs, including a stone fist. 467
- Uses collapsing buildings, steel pipes, and street debris to restrain and crush opponents. 481 482
- Can hide bombs, poison needles, and binding tools among the debris under his control. 482
- Strong Haki coatings can prevent his splitting effect from fully taking hold on an object. 456
Haki
Buggy uses both Observation and Armament Haki in a tactical rather than force-focused style. 268
- Reads danger zones and attack trajectories to split away from the strongest point of impact. 268
- Coats weapons such as flying knives with Armament Haki for lethal strikes. 268
- Cannot rely on fruit evasion alone against Haki-infused shockwaves and broad-area attacks. 76 363
Demolition and Poison Tactics
Buggy specializes in indirect attacks, combining detached limbs with bombs, toxins, and battlefield traps. 39 205
- Special Buggy Balls — explosive bombs capable of destroying fortified gates, dispersing crowds, and damaging structures. 39 41
- Slime Micro-Split Poison Blast Bombs — adhesive miniature bombs that release corrosive liquid and paralyzing poison gas through armor gaps. 205 224
- Deploys bombs from detached hands and fingers, enabling attacks from blind spots or inside enemy defenses. 205 284
- Used poison fog and hidden explosives to drain Shiryu’s stamina while avoiding direct sword combat. 481 482
Logistics, Recruitment, and Treasure Sense
Buggy is an effective logistics manager when motivated by responsibility for Eclipse’s resources. He coordinates supplies, remembers ship-by-ship shortages, and treats maintaining equipment and provisions as part of combat readiness. 264 311
- Recruited and organized the Tontatta Tribe into an Eclipse logistics force after their liberation. 229 240
- Assessed Baroque Works agents for recruitment, labor, intelligence, and engineering roles. 254
- Planned the capture of Southwest Supply Island’s port, shipyards, warehouses, ledgers, and sea routes. 267 268
- Possesses unusual intuition for hidden valuables and technical irregularities, locating a faulty drone component and hidden treasure compartments. 208 378
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Seastone Knuckles — insulated gloves and finger guards with Seastone striking surfaces; designed for use with detached limbs against Devil Fruit users. 15
- Special Buggy Balls — signature explosive bombs used for breaching, area denial, and ambushes. 39 91
- Slime Micro-Split Poison Blast Bombs — adhesive poison-gas explosives developed with Caesar, Indigo, and Jeno. 205
- Raiu — Shiryu’s sword, claimed by Buggy after Shiryu’s defeat. 482
- Short dagger from Sleepy Ancient Town — recovered alongside gold and gemstones from a hidden castle compartment. 378
