Background
Ace named the vessel Eclipse when the Eclipse Pirates first set sail from the East Blue. It began as an expensive, medium-sized fast ship with an unusually stable chassis and exceptional speed. 8
Under Jeno's direction, the Eclipse was progressively converted from a high-speed sailing vessel into a heavily armored warship. Its earliest major refit replaced the bow with a Starfall Black Steel Vermilion Bird ram and installed steam boilers with concealed paddle wheels. 53
The crew later used the ship to ascend the Knock-Up Stream, reach Sky Island, and ultimately travel to the moon after Jeno incorporated Sky Island Dial technology into a flight-capable propulsion system. 58 76 77
Following the Water 7 incident, Jeno, Franky, and Iceburg completed a more comprehensive rebuild using Starfall Black Steel and Treasure Tree Adam. The completed Eclipse abandoned conventional sails in favor of three engines, deep-hull suspension propulsion, and stern blast vents. 84 95
Development
| Period / Upgrade | Chapter | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Original vessel | 8 | A costly medium-sized fast ship with a stable hull and high sailing speed; Ace christened it the Eclipse. 8 |
| Black Steel refit | 53 | Received a Starfall Black Steel Vermilion Bird ram, reinforced waterline armor, high-pressure steam boilers, and concealed paddle wheels. 53 |
| Sky-to-space conversion | 76 | Gained a large energy-storage chamber and a matrix of modified Breath and Reject Dials connected to steam boilers, enabling sustained aerial flight when fully charged. 76 |
| Water 7 reconstruction | 95 | Rebuilt with Starfall Black Steel and Treasure Tree Adam; conventional sails were removed in favor of three engines, suspension propulsion, and stern blast vents. 95 |
| Deep-sea coating system | 150 | Rayleigh applied Yarukiman Mangrove resin for deep-sea travel; Jeno analyzed the process to automate future coating. 150 |
| Vector-thruster era | 184, 209 | Equipped with vector thrusters, silent-mode operation, Lunar Robot support units, and retractable unmanned reconnaissance drones. 184 209 |
Appearance
The Eclipse is a massive, streamlined black warship with a teardrop-shaped hull. Its armored frame bears dark-gold circuitry, while its bow is dominated by a sharp Vermilion Bird ram forged from Starfall Black Steel. 76 106
- Its hull is reinforced with Starfall Black Steel and Treasure Tree Adam. 95
- The bow ram resembles a dark red Vermilion Bird and is used as a direct-impact weapon. 53 106
- Vector thrusters are mounted beneath the hull for aerial maneuvering and rapid acceleration. 184 209
- Its flag is black and red, depicting a pale skull, crimson-gold wings, and a dark-red ring of flames resembling an eclipse corona. 219
Capabilities & Systems
Surface, Aerial, and Deep-Sea Travel
The Eclipse can operate across the sea surface, cloud sea, high-altitude airspace, and deep water.
- Black Steel paddle wheels and steam boilers provide propulsion even in difficult currents or dead seas. 53 58
- Its Dial-and-steam propulsion matrix can generate enough downward thrust to overcome gravity and achieve flight. 76
- Enel's electricity can supplement the vessel's aerial propulsion during extended travel. 77
- Leona can reduce the ship's weight with the Float-Float Fruit, allowing it to rise silently before its vector thrusters accelerate it. 184
- A Yarukiman Mangrove resin coating protects the hull against deep-sea pressure; insufficient or uneven coating risks catastrophic failure at extreme depths. 150
Armament
The Eclipse functions as a mobile artillery platform as well as a ramming vessel.
- Its Starfall Black Steel ram can smash through harbor defenses and destroy docked ships through momentum alone. 106
- A laser cannon disabled a pursuing Marine warship during the descent toward Fish-Man Island. 150
- Automated weapon arrays can deploy from side hatches and fire under remote targeting control. 279
- The vessel can support aerial fleet operations alongside modified frigates, airships, and flight platforms. 311
Reconnaissance and Automation
Jeno has integrated automated support systems into the Eclipse.
- Lunar Robots perform cleaning, supply handling, and general shipboard labor. 79 209
- Retractable unmanned reconnaissance drones are stored in side bays for scouting. 209
- Jeno recorded Rayleigh's coating technique with a micro-scanner and intended to automate the resin-application process. 150
- The Eclipse can operate in a silent mode before launching with its vector-thruster system. 184
Onboard Facilities
- Medical bay — Used for major treatments, including Bonney's care under Chopper's supervision and Vegapunk's remote guidance. 184
- Laboratory — Used for research into crops, medicines, Devil Fruits, weaponry, and mechanical systems. 359 366
- Devil Fruit display case — Stores acquired Devil Fruits for later distribution within Eclipse. 264 379
- Arsenal and production support — Carries ordnance, protective gear, medical supplies, and equipment for large-scale expeditions. 311
Crew and Operators
- Portgas D. Ace — Captain who named the Eclipse and directs its major deployments. 8 475
- Jeno — Chief mechanic responsible for the ship's propulsion, armor, weapon systems, automation, and repeated reconstructions. 53 76 95 209
- Carina — Regular helmsman and intelligence coordinator; she navigated the ship through the Knock-Up Stream using Beli and a Compass Bird. 58
- Leona — Uses the Float-Float Fruit to lift the Eclipse and accompanying fleet into the air. 184 311
- Enel — Supplies electrical power during aerial travel and provides air-defense support from the ship. 77 314
- Franky — Collaborated with Jeno on the Water 7 reconstruction. 84 95
- Iceburg — Assisted Jeno and Franky in solving the structural integration of Starfall Black Steel and Treasure Tree Adam. 95
- Rayleigh — Taught Jeno the specialized resin-coating process required for deep-sea operations. 150
Story Role / Major Arcs
- East Blue departure — Ace named the ship and used it as the founding vessel of the Eclipse Pirates. 8
- Sky Island and moon expedition — The Eclipse survived the Knock-Up Stream, sailed across the Cloud Sea, became capable of independent flight, and reached the moon. 58 59 76 77
- Water 7 reconstruction — It underwent its largest structural overhaul, becoming a heavily armed, engine-driven warship. 84 95
- Fish-Man Island descent — The ship demonstrated its deep-sea capability after receiving resin coating and descended to the ocean floor. 150 151
- Dressrosa expansion — It transported the crew during the seizure and reorganization of Dressrosa, which became Eclipse's principal New World foothold. 219 229
