Background / History

Tang Liu was originally a fifteen-year-old Chinese high-school student and orphan. Having read Douluo Continent in his previous life, he retains knowledge of its world after transmigrating and is named Tang Liu by Tang Hao. He grows up in Holy Soul Village alongside Tang San, whom he treats with respect and care, while openly resenting Tang Hao's neglect and depression. 1

As a child, Tang Liu is physically frail. At age three, he suffers persistent coughing and fevers for months; Tang Hao secretly uses soul power to aid his recovery, while Tang San gathers medicinal herbs for him. 8 His stubbornness appears early: he refuses to submit under Tang Hao's pressure even when his body is on the verge of collapse. 2

His awakening initially appears to produce Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power, but the Assistant System later identifies his true first martial soul as the mutated Ethereal Blue Silver Emperor, alongside the Clear Sky Hammer and an unknown dormant third martial soul. 3 4 At Notting Academy, Grandmaster recognizes the Ethereal Blue Silver Emperor as an intangible auxiliary martial soul, while Tang Liu declines formal apprenticeship because he considers Tang San's master his own as well. 6

After obtaining his first spirit ring, Tang Liu awakens the Compendium of Haolan Spells, the ancient book connected to his transmigration. Its self-generated soul rings and marking-based abilities make him a target worth concealing from Martial Soul Hall. 10 11 12 Tang Hao ultimately removes him from Notting Academy and personally oversees his cultivation after learning of his innate Level 20 soul power. 17 19

Tang Liu spends several years traveling and training with Tang Hao, compressing his soul power rather than advancing immediately. He later enters Shrek Academy at age twelve, reunites with Tang San and Xiao Wu, and supports the other applicants during Zhao Wuji's entrance assessment. 30 43 44

After joining Shrek, Tang Liu spends three months in Deep Meditation and opens a Sea of Spirit, gaining the ability to freely release and retract his Mental Power. Tang Liu later restores Tang Chen's consciousness in Killing City, reunites Tang Hao with Tang Yuehua at Moonlight Pavilion, and formally returns to the Clear Sky Sect with Tang San. Tang Liu eventually becomes a Title Douluo and participates in conflicts against Spirit Hall, later surviving an apparent death through his five-coffin contingency plan. Tang Liu is lazy about physical training and openly dislikes exhausting work, preferring cultivation, reading, planning, or resting. He is especially self-conscious about his short stature and weak physical strength, defensively insisting that he is an auxiliary-type Soul Master when criticized for it. 3 30

He is also stubborn, sharp-tongued, and irreverent toward Tang Hao, regularly provoking him or manipulating him through spoiled behavior. Despite this, his hostility stems partly from concern for his family's suffering and Tang Hao's refusal to move beyond the past. 1 4 23 24

Beneath his teasing and occasional superiority complex, Tang Liu is strategic and protective. He plans his soul-ring path years ahead, prioritizes healing Ah Yin, conceals dangerous information from Martial Soul Hall, and repeatedly uses his abilities to protect Tang San and his future teammates. 11 25 44 45

Tang Liu's strategic side becomes increasingly ruthless as his strength grows. He is willing to threaten Dugu Bo, alter memories, control enemies through the Hao-Lan Mark, and manipulate political events when he believes doing so will protect his plans or companions. 100 104 292
