Recruiting Swan
When Augustus met Rory Swann and his cousins, Tychus had just stepped out the door, where two Resocialized Soldier in Power Armor were conducting a routine body search. The noise outside grew louder, and the rumble of machinery began to fill the air.
Augustus straightened his collar, composed himself, placed his hands on the table, and sat up straight. However, before Augustus "Come in," four impatient Meinhoff rushed in.
These people are generally shorter than Terrans of the same age, standing only about five and a half to six feet tall. However, each of them has a more robust and broader skeletal structure Terrans, and their exposed, thick arms are full of bulging, veiny muscles.
The lead miner from Meinhoff had a cracked upper lip that trembled as he spoke, and a thick black mustache grew under his large nose. His skin was somewhat pale, but his face was full of the marks of hardship, with scabs from sharp objects and burns clearly visible.
The miner's voice was loud and unusually loud; when he shouted, it sounded as if a steam train was passing through the office.
The Kel-Morian people of Meinhoff did not harbor much deep-seated hatred for the Terrans. They only vaguely felt that the inflation and internal economic collapse caused by the war should be attributed to the Terran Confederacy, but in reality, they had never seen many Terrans.
What else can we do? We need to eat.
"You're Foreman August Monsk? Sorry, I might have a local accent." The miner said, "I'm Rory Swann, you can call me Rory, or Swann, but there are two thousand Swann in New Aberroven."
My cousin heard that you're hiring here, and the salary is pretty good.
"Rory Swann," Augustus murmured the name. "I remember you, Swann. I picked you out of over four hundred applications and even had someone tell you you could bring some help."
Augustus knew this name all too well. Rory Swann was a genius engineer in StarCraft, serving under Raynor 'Raynor's Raiders. It seemed there was nothing he couldn't build given a blueprint.
"You have a Level 1 Mechanic license, and you once converted a Kalaris assault Armored Vehicle into a tank, still using a fossil fuel engine. In addition, you also upgraded the built-in battery of the New Apollowin's automated mining drone, increasing its flight time by three to five days." Augustus looked at Swann.
"This undoubtedly proves your talent in this area. But I'm also puzzled; with patent fees alone, you and your people shouldn't be starving."
"You don't understand the situation. It feels a bit strange to call you foreman." Swann shook his head. "The Swann Family is a large family. We have many brothers and sisters. For a large family that makes a living from mining, the more people who can work down the mine, the better. In the family, you have three children, he has five. Gradually, there are too many children."
"This is the most difficult time for the family, and I must stand with my relatives through this hardship. As long as I have the strength, I will help others," Swann said. "Unity is the key to the Swann Family's survival to this day. You Terrans may not understand, but when I need help, they will certainly support me without reservation."
"The Kel-Morian families are much larger than ours, and the bonds between them are quite strong. They always enjoy lively gatherings," Augustus said with a chuckle. "I also like children."
"Well, well, it's good that you think that way now," Swann sighed. He was also puzzled as to why this Terrans officer was talking so much with him instead of about work, but he didn't dislike the clean-cut, gray-haired young man.
After all, it wasn't the Terran soldier he had stereotyped as a scarred, muscular bald Terran.
"It's not easy for the Swann Family to raise so many children. So, have you considered finding a job with a higher salary and a better working environment?" Augustus asked Lisa to bring them a few chairs, gesturing for them to sit down, as if he wanted to have a serious talk. This left Swann and his brothers even more confused.
"You're not even thirty yet, but your achievements are far more astonishing than I just described. Swann, your talent in technology and mechanics is actually far greater than you imagine. If you just submit your resume, any top technology or engineering company will extend an offer to you."
Young Swann was not good at hiding his joy and immediately realized that he was being flattered and was getting a little carried away. He quickly understood that Augustus was trying to recruit him. "I will not work for the army of the Terran Confederacy. Many of my relatives and friends have died at the hands of the Terrans."
"I think I've made myself clear. Not the military, but working for me." Augustus, as if prepared, pushed an already opened personal terminal in front of Swann and the others. It displayed a profile of the Mengsk Family and industry estimates of their family business. "We need talent like you. As for salary, I guarantee you'll be satisfied."
Swann and his brothers took the personal terminal and examined it, all expressing doubt about its authenticity. After all, they had never seen so much money in their lives.
"My family and friends have also advised me to find a decent, high-paying job instead of staying in the mines," Swann said after a moment's thought. "But I insist on staying with the family. Most of the high-tech companies are in Moria, which is too far from Meinhoff. I don't want to leave my family."
"I see," Augustus nodded, and said no more.
Swann had assumed Augustus had already given up, after all, he was probably just saying it casually, just being polite. Aren't the Terrans like that? They're obsessed with tedious and useless etiquette, acting elegant and gentlemanly, but actually distant and indifferent, and not many of their words are sincere.
But Swann was then taken aback by what Augustus said.
"I happen to be looking to hire a mining family to work for my mining business," Augustus. "I can hire all of you."
The Swann Family is a long-established family of Kel-Morian technology miners, making them worthy of Augustus's considerable investment to win over.
"My home planet Korhal IV, is the most prosperous and intellectually advanced of the thirteen main planets of the Terran Confederacy, with a comprehensive and sound social welfare system. Each of you will receive a full pension after retirement." Augustus seemed to have completely forgotten the purpose of his visit. "Of course, words alone are not enough to convince people. You can settle in Korhal for a while and work for my family's technology and industrial enterprises, and then bring your families over."
"If the Swann Family moves to Korhal, I can arrange jobs for every adult, and I will cover all the relocation expenses. I will even fund the purchase of a piece of land as your new family estate."
