Geography and Settlements
- The Land of Water is surrounded by sea. An expanse of water separates its territory from the border area facing the Land of Fire, making the waterways a major obstacle to invasion 742 754.
- It is described as resource-rich, though wealth is unevenly distributed: most prosperous towns lie near Kirigakure 618 814.
- Sea Bream Town is a comparatively prosperous exception located far from Kirigakure. During the war, shinobi from the subordinate Water Ninja Village guard it 814.
- Turtlefish Village is a small, inconspicuous settlement where one of the stone tablets sought by Orochimaru is hidden 392.
Shinobi Organization and Defenses
- Kirigakure is the Land of Water's foremost ninja village. Smaller villages, including the Water Ninja Village, depend on it and can be called upon to provide wartime personnel 814.
- Kirigakure's border is guarded by concealed sentries. During Uchiha Yue's reconnaissance for Orochimaru, their deployment leaves few apparent openings and changes after the sentries detect intruders 385 386.
- The coastal waterways form Kirigakure's principal border defense. Earlier Konoha attempts to cross them suffered heavy losses without fully entering the Land of Water 742.
- Kirigakure stations Hozuki Clan shinobi along its second defensive line; their ability to liquefy their bodies is particularly effective in aquatic combat 755 756.
History
Orochimaru sends Uchiha Yue's Anbu squad to locate the Land of Water's hidden border sentries before entering the country to collect scattered stone tablets. After Stream and Pinewood infiltrate independently and draw Kirigakure's attention, Yue uses the diversion to guide Orochimaru's group across the border. They remain concealed in the Land of Water for two months before Kirigakure notices disturbances and the group leaves 385 388 400.
Yue later enters the Land of Water alone while searching for his mother, Minako. He kills the Kirigakure shinobi guarding his entry route, then continues attacking Kirigakure personnel as his search fails to produce information about her. Kirigakure responds by dispatching troops to hunt him 489 495 497 506.
During the subsequent war, Yue captures Kirigakure's landward border camp, but its waterway defenses remain in place. He later leads elite Uchiha forces against the second defensive line. Kirigakure's losses become severe enough that it assigns subordinate-village shinobi to guard towns such as Sea Bream Town 742 800 814.
By autumn of Konoha Year 45, Yue's forces have occupied half the Land of Water's territory and advanced toward Kirigakure. The Fourth Mizukage, Yagura, challenges Yue to a decisive battle at Falling Water Gorge near the village; the battle's outcome is expected to shape the course of the war. Kirigakure subsequently enters a truce with Yue after losing numerous Kage-level fighters 944 950 951 952 973.
