History

Founding and early standing

Konoha was founded by the Uchiha and Senju clans, with Uchiha Madara and Senju Hashirama recognized as its co-founders. It became the first ninja village. 1

Madara’s later defection and battle with Hashirama at the Valley of the End left his descendants stigmatized. Uchiha Nara, an elite jonin descended from Madara, was ostracized both by villagers and by the Uchiha Clan. 1

The Senju Clan gradually faded from prominence after the Second Hokage’s death, leaving the Uchiha as Konoha’s most visible noble clan and a frequent target of resentment from later-arriving families. 7

Ninja Academy

During the ninja-war era, the Ninja Academy was designed to produce combat-ready genin rather than provide a relaxed education. Its six-year curriculum was divided into four phases: basic training, drill training, applied training, and graduation examination. 8

Students could graduate early by passing examinations for each phase. The Academy also taught theory, cultivation knowledge, combat experience, and Konoha history. 8

Anbu

The Second Hokage established Konoha’s Anbu to protect the Hokage and guard against foreign invasion. As the ninja wars intensified, the unit’s duties expanded to intelligence gathering, assassination, and pursuing rogue ninja. 35

Government and Internal Politics

Konoha was led by the Third Hokage, while the Council of Elders—particularly Shimura Danzō, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu—held substantial influence over village policy. 700 869

Danzō controlled Konoha’s “dark side” and increasingly treated his personal interests as the village’s interests after failing to obtain the Hokage position. 869

The village’s apparent unity concealed competition among the Third Hokage, Danzō, and Uchiha Fugaku’s factions. 747

Military Strength

Konoha was widely regarded as the Shinobi World’s strongest ninja village because of its number of Kage-level fighters. The Third Hokage, Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade were sufficient to deter other great villages from attempting its destruction. 332

Its forces relied on clan techniques and specialized units as well as individual elites:

• Ino–Shika–Chō — Shikaku Nara’s body-control techniques, Inoichi Yamanaka’s mind-control arts, and Choza Akimichi’s offense and defense made the trio especially valued in coordinated combat. 331 337
• Uchiha elite units — These units served prominently on the Land of Water front and repeatedly broke Kirigakure defensive lines under Uchiha Yue’s command. 974
• New recruit units — Konoha deployed rookie teams as reinforcements and relied on Team “Yue” and Uchiha personnel to give them functional battlefield training. 806

Major Conflicts

Land of Medicine campaign

Under Orochimaru, Konoha defeated the Land of Medicine and later divided its territory with Sunagakure. The victory intimidated other villages, which began quietly strengthening themselves rather than openly challenging Konoha. 235

Konoha maintained defensive lines along the former Land of Medicine border with the Land of Wind, where Hyuga forces under Hiashi and Hizashi were stationed. 235

Secret Kirigakure agreement

Konoha secretly agreed to send an Uzumaki clan member to Kirigakure to reinforce the Three-Tails’ seal in exchange for only verbal friendship. Tsunade and Orochimaru concluded that the arrangement was effectively a sacrifice, intended to let Kirigakure study an Uzumaki shinobi’s constitution. 474

The selected shinobi was Uzumaki Minako, Uchiha Yue’s mother. 474

Dawn Battle and the Third Shinobi World War

At the Land of Water border, Konoha’s troops had become dependent on Hyuga Sohei, whom many considered their savior after supply shortages left them struggling to survive. 711 714

Uchiha Yue killed Konoha ninja during the resulting confrontation and later attributed their deaths to a Kirigakure ambush. The official historical record described the Dawn Battle as his successful repulsion of a Kirigakure invasion and the opening of the Third Shinobi World War. 723

Destruction of Kirigakure

During the Third Shinobi World War, Uchiha Tsuki destroyed Kirigakure and eliminated nearly ninety percent of its shinobi, removing one of the Five Great Ninja Villages from the world stage. 1001

Konoha’s own forces suffered severe losses in the campaign, including many shinobi who could no longer continue serving. 1001

Decline after the Sannin and Uchiha Yue’s departure

After Uchiha Yue defected and Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya left the village, Konoha’s prosperity and deterrent power declined. Minato Namikaze’s path to becoming Fourth Hokage was strengthened by the absence of those more influential figures. 1064 1065

Kumogakure, Sunagakure, and Iwagakure later invaded together as the Third Shinobi World War reached the Land of Fire. 1065

Four Kage conference and the Asura War

Konoha hosted a summit with Kumogakure, Sunagakure, and Iwagakure to form a united response against Dark Asura. The meeting was marked by distrust over which village would lead the alliance. 1090

Most villages ultimately sided with the Five Kage against Uchiha Yue and Amegakure during the Asura War. 1115

Uchiha rebellion and the Fourth Shinobi World War

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Uchiha Clan under Fugaku rebelled and rapidly seized half of the Land of Fire’s territory, exploiting its knowledge of Konoha’s defenses and infrastructure. 1181

At the same time, the Third Hokage was controlled by the Death God, leaving Konoha to prepare for invasion under compromised leadership. 1180 1181
