When Kakashi lifted his forehead protector, he revealed not an ordinary Three-Tomoe Sharingan, but a Mangekyō Sharingan. "Impossible!" Itachi exclaimed. "Kakashi, how did you do it? You aren't a member of the Uchiha Clan. How could you awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan?" Kakashi's awakening had stunned Itachi. Only someone with Uchiha blood should have been able to awaken those eyes, and Kakashi's case overturned everything Itachi knew about the Sharingan.
Kakashi smiled. "That's something I can't tell you. Now, the real battle begins." With that, he drew a kunai and took up a guarded stance.
Itachi Uchiha studied Kakashi's Mangekyō Sharingan closely. Suddenly, he discovered an incredibly important secret about Kakashi and understood why he possessed those eyes. Looking at Kakashi, Itachi smiled. "Kakashi, I admit you now have the strength to fight me. But you seem to have misunderstood something. I didn't come to Konoha to fight you. I came to find Naruto Uzumaki. Since I know he isn't here, there's no reason for me to waste time with you. Let's go, Kisame."
Kisame Hoshigaki froze at Itachi's words and asked in confusion, "Aren't we going to finish them off first?"
"Our mission is Naruto Uzumaki," Itachi replied. "There's no need to waste time fighting them here. Besides, if we delay any longer, neither of us will be able to leave. We should go before Konoha's people react. Kakashi's eyes are now Mangekyō Sharingan, just like mine. A battle between two people with those eyes isn't something that can end easily. Our best option is to leave."
After hearing Itachi's reasoning, Kisame Hoshigaki replied, "You're right. Let's get out of here first, then, Itachi." He prepared to leave.
Just then, Guy dropped from above and launched a Leaf Whirlwind at Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki. Itachi hurriedly leaped back, while Kisame
