Itachi and Shizuka defeated Thanatos by combining the Ame-no-Murakumo with the power of Shizuka’s inner world, then tried to seal his soul in a gourd. The gourd and Thanatos vanished together, leaving Itachi badly injured as Thanatos vowed to return when the seal on the Divine Realm was broken.
