Background / History

Kakashi first encounters Lin Cheng and Kimimaro in the Land of Snow, where he is protecting Princess Kazahana Koyuki. Though exhausted during the Snow Ninja attack, he warns Lin Cheng and Kimimaro of incoming danger and later watches them overwhelm the enemy forces. 11 12

After Koyuki refuses Kakashi’s plan to leave the Land of Snow, he follows her and the Lin brothers to Kazahana Dōtō’s castle. Kakashi is nearly helpless after expending most of his chakra during the final battle, but Lin Cheng’s Ice Release saves the group from the collapsing castle. 12 14

Intrigued by the brothers’ strength, Kakashi invites them to Konoha. Lin Cheng refuses because he and Kimimaro are fugitives from Kirigakure and distrust Sarutobi Hiruzen’s policies. Kakashi later reports the encounter and Lin Cheng’s criticism directly to the Third Hokage. 14 15

Years later, Kakashi reunites with Lin Cheng and Kimimaro while on an Anbu mission. He is openly delighted to see them again, listens to their experiences as fugitives, and concludes that Lin Cheng’s strength has reached—or is close to—Kage level. 37 38

Following orders from Hiruzen, Kakashi recruits the brothers again and successfully brings them to Konoha after they agree to negotiate their conditions in person. He later leads them on their first Anbu assignment alongside Tenzō. 38 40 47
