Background / History

Konoha first becomes a potential refuge for Lin Cheng and Kimimaro when Kakashi invites the Mist fugitives to join the village. Lin Cheng refuses, believing that Hiruzen’s pursuit of peace could lead him to surrender the brothers to Kirigakure under political pressure. Kakashi later repeats these accusations to Hiruzen, who acknowledges that his reputation has become tarnished. 14 15

Years later, Kakashi again recruits the brothers, arguing that Konoha’s medical-ninjutsu knowledge and Tsunade’s expertise offer Kimimaro the best chance of treatment. Lin Cheng agrees to return only to negotiate directly with the Third Hokage. 38

Upon arriving, Lin Cheng and Kimimaro formally join Konoha after Hiruzen accepts their conditions: they are not to be used as bargaining chips, must remain together, may accept only protection-type missions, and can study foundational ninjutsu. Lin Cheng is permitted to study medical ninjutsu after one year of missions. 40

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment of the Lin Brothers

Konoha is initially presented as a village Lin Cheng distrusts because of Hiruzen’s reputation for compromising to preserve peace. Kakashi’s continued advocacy, Kimimaro’s illness, and the village’s medical resources eventually persuade Lin Cheng to negotiate membership. 14 38 40

Internal Suspicion

The brothers’ arrival divides Konoha’s leadership. Hiruzen honors his agreement with them, while Homura, Koharu, and Danzō view them as dangerous unknowns. Danzō’s unauthorized Root surveillance escalates the conflict. 41 47

Anbu Service

After joining, Lin Cheng and Kimimaro enter the Anbu under Kakashi’s command. Their first recorded mission takes them alongside Tenzō to the Land of Wind in support of Sunagakure. 47 48
