Background / History
Yu Xiaogang wandered near the Soul Hunting Forest hoping to recruit talented disciples and validate the theories for which he had long been mocked. Dugu Bo permitted him to accompany Dugu Yan’s hunt for her first soul ring, despite Yu Xiaogang’s poor reputation and limited level-29 cultivation. 23
When asked to advise Dugu Yan’s Jade Scale Snake martial soul, Yu Xiaogang recommended a mild, ten-year Solitary Bamboo. He argued that a toxic beast-type ring would worsen her venom and could lead to deformity or death. 24 Lin Yuan publicly rejected this recommendation, instead urging Dugu Bo to obtain a highly venomous snake-type soul beast exceeding five hundred years. 24 26
Hu Liena’s successful absorption of a 1,400-year first soul ring and Dugu Yan’s later absorption of a 600-year poison ring directly contradicted Yu Xiaogang’s stated first-ring limit. Unable to accept the evidence, he dismissed both cases as abnormal exceptions or the result of forbidden methods. 25 26 27
After Dugu Yan succeeded, Yu Xiaogang attacked the six-year-old Lin Yuan in anger. Lin Yuan defeated him with one punch, broke the bones in his hand, and left him vomiting blood before Yu Xiaogang fled the forest. 27 28
Nine years later, Yu Xiaogang had become Tang San’s teacher in Nuoding City. Tang San’s rapid advancement to level 30 convinced Yu Xiaogang that he could use his disciple’s achievements to vindicate his theories. 40 He brought Tang San to Martial Soul City intending to obtain Bibi Dong’s Twin Martial Souls cultivation method, confidently relying on what he believed was his former influence over her. 41 43
Bibi Dong initially refused to see him and, when they eventually met, treated his request with open contempt. Yu Xiaogang recognized Lin Yuan as the child who had crippled him years earlier, then wagered access to the cultivation method on Tang San defeating Lin Yuan. 42 43 44 Tang San’s loss—against Lin Yuan’s unprecedented purple, purple, black ring configuration—further shattered Yu Xiaogang’s confidence in his own theories. Bibi Dong had both master and disciple expelled from Martial Soul Hall. 45 47
Tang San’s faith in Yu Xiaogang deteriorated after the defeat, particularly when Yu Xiaogang insisted that Lin Yuan’s rings were created through life-shortening forbidden techniques. Tang San asked to be left alone, creating a visible rift between teacher and disciple. 48 Yu Xiaogang nevertheless continued to advise Tang San and Shrek Academy, later proposing formation tactics against the Golden Generation. 71 72 73
Following Lin Yuan’s campaign against Tang San and Tang Hao, Yu Xiaogang helped the fugitives evade the Spirit Hall Empire. He proposed escaping overseas to Sea God Island, where Tang San could pursue further strength before returning for revenge. 86
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man whose rigid expression and austere manner reinforce the scholarly image he attempts to project. 23 40
- Initially wears a washed-out gray robe and keeps a buzz cut. 23
- His short hair begins to gray by the time he teaches Tang San in Nuoding City. 40
- Later appears in carefully prepared dark robes when seeking an audience with Bibi Dong. 43
- After his expulsion from Martial Soul City, his formerly neat gray robe is torn and covered in mud and dust. 48
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely prideful about his status as a theorist. He repeatedly presents his conclusions as universal laws, adopts a lofty demeanor when speaking, and reacts with anger when challenged by children or stronger soul masters. 24 25
His confidence frequently turns into denial. Even after Hu Liena and Dugu Yan visibly exceed the limits he taught, he insists that their results are fraudulent, anomalous, or dependent on forbidden techniques rather than reconsidering his conclusions. 25 26 48
He is highly invested in using Tang San’s success as proof of his own worth. This ambition drives his demand for Bibi Dong’s Twin Martial Souls method, his wager against Lin Yuan, and his continued insistence that Tang San will one day validate his teachings. 40 43 44
Theories & Instruction
Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang presents his Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul theory as the definitive framework for soul-ring compatibility and cultivation. 23 25
- He argues that martial soul and soul-ring compatibility is more important than simply pursuing older rings. 23 24
- He states that a first soul ring cannot exceed 423 years without causing fatal backlash. 25
- He promotes the conventional Soul Elder configuration of two yellow rings followed by one purple ring. 47
- He recommended a mild Solitary Bamboo for Dugu Yan’s poison-type Jade Scale Snake martial soul, believing stronger poison would destabilize her body. 24
- His stated limits are contradicted by Hu Liena’s 1,400-year first ring, Dugu Yan’s 600-year poison ring, and Lin Yuan’s three-ring configuration of purple, purple, and black. 25 27 45 47
Tactical Instruction
Yu Xiaogang applies his theories to combat planning, especially while directing Tang San and Shrek Academy. 71 72
- He identifies perceived weaknesses in Hu Liena, Xie Yue, and Yan’s teamwork, intending to disrupt their control, attacks, and soul-power reserves. 71
- He develops a formation strategy that concentrates the team’s power on Tang San. 72
- He later credits Shrek Academy’s draw against the Golden Generation to his “heterologous repulsion and single-core limit amplification” theory. 73
