Background / History
Aedes Elysiae and the Savior’s Title
Phainon grew up in Aedes Elysiae alongside Cyrene. They intended to leave the village to explore the wider world, but news of an approaching catastrophe prompted them to consult Oracle Cards. Every card Phainon drew named him Savior, which Dodorami and Cyrene interpreted as a destiny to bear the world’s burden 292.
He initially chose to stay and protect his village. When the Black Tide arrived, it transformed the inhabitants into monsters; some retained enough awareness to beg him to end their suffering. Forced to kill the people he had hoped to save, Phainon left his destroyed homeland and traveled to Okhema 292.
Okhema’s elders dismissed the young, frail newcomer and assigned him to the army as an ordinary recruit. He later gained recognition in battle and faced Mydei in a contest using the Sacred Scales of Talanton. In the memory sequence witnessed by Stelle, Cyrene advised him to place both his Savior Oracle Card and the invisible Stelle on his side of the scales. His victory led Mydei to promise to call him “Savior” 292.
The First Journey of Flame-Chasing
In Phainon’s foundational memories, Stelle had not existed in the original cycle. The Demigods gathered for the Journey of Flame-Chasing and sacrificed themselves one after another, leaving only Phainon and Cyrene at its end 292.
The pair sought all twelve Core Flames to complete Re-Genesis. Oronis gave Cyrene the Core Flame of Time and opened a passage to the Genesis Vortex Heart. Their intended salvation, however, concealed a world-ending deception 295 301 374.
Cyrene voluntarily died by Phainon’s hand so that “time” would disappear and Amphoreus would not enter the Re-Genesis designed by Laicus. Using her power, Phainon turned back time and began the first Eternal Return 301 374.
Eternal Return and Khaslana
During the first Eternal Return, Phainon openly explained Amphoreus’s manipulation to the Demigods. He allied with Kerythra, agreeing to serve as her enforcer in exchange for the Core Flames. Although he recovered the flames peacefully, preventing new Demigods from arising left the population unable to withstand the Black Tide 301.
The Phainon carried over from the preceding lifetime became Khaslana, the Flame Reaver, while a new Phainon was born within the next cycle. The younger incarnation blamed Khaslana for depriving the Chrysos Heirs of their power and attacked him; Khaslana killed that younger self 301.
Later cycles repeatedly forced Phainon to reclaim the twelve Core Flames through violence. Their accumulated power ruined his body and destabilized his mind. He concealed his wounds beneath a tattered black robe and continued killing former companions—including Mydei and Castorice—to prevent the deception from reaching its conclusion 301.
Eventually, continuation depended on the newborn Phainon killing his older incarnation and inheriting all his Core Flames, memories, and responsibilities. These cycles were sustained while he awaited the Savior from Beyond the Sky 301 302 303.
Appearance
Phainon is described as a handsome, white-haired young man whose relaxed manner conceals the damage of his earlier lifetimes 60 213.
- Everyday clothing: Loose yellow-and-purple pajamas, noted by Zhu Zhuqing as an unusual choice for going out 151 213.
- Transformed appearance: Golden hair, radiant skin, a divine halo, and asymmetrical wings combining brilliant golden light with dark or deep-purple feathers 300 302 303.
- Khaslana’s disguise: A heavy, tattered black robe concealing his ruined body and pained face 301.
- Little Bai E: A small, cheerful child representing his true self after the removal of his accumulated burdens; his childhood appearance includes a recognizable cowlick 304 388.
- Memorial statue: An adult figure covered in cracks, pierced through the chest, leaning backward with arms reaching toward the sky 388.
Personality
Phainon is gentle, warm, and outwardly cheerful. On Douluo Continent, he chats comfortably with others despite their growing awareness of his suffering. Zhu Zhuqing recognizes that his rare bursts of anger are not arbitrary, but connected to a deeply painful past 213 243 287.
His protective instincts extend beyond personal attachments. He willingly places himself at the front of dangerous operations, trusts Stelle as his partner, and prioritizes reaching the Genesis Vortex Heart over settling his hatred of the Flame Reaver. As Okhema’s crisis deepens, he accepts responsibility for its citizens and learns to lead without Aglaea 70 121 151 154 287.
His compassion does not prevent harsh decisions. He apologizes to Oronis while threatening to seize the Titan’s Core Flame, reasoning that hesitation would be cruel to Mydei. Across the Eternal Returns, killing loved ones never makes him indifferent: his guilt, grief, and anger instead accumulate until they fuel his rebellion against Nanook 45 301 305.
Phainon’s endurance is not an absence of despair. His memories reveal profound vulnerability, particularly over Cyrene’s repeated deaths and the failure of his accumulated power to meaningfully injure Nanook. Beneath the Savior’s obligations, his original wish remains to fulfill everyone else’s wishes 387 388.
